HORSE RACING MOVIES COMING UP
Secretariat the movie; It’s among three horse films to follow Seabiscuit
EXCERPT: Canwest News Service
In 2003, a film about a horse that rose from obscurity to success did what many felt could not be accomplished:
It proved to Hollywood, the public enjoys feel good movies. There remains a huge audience for the sport of
horse racing.
Produced for $86 million, Seabiscuit made more than $120 million in the U.S., and $148.5 million worldwide,
ith more profits still coming in through DVDs and other media outlets.
Off that film’s success, at least three other major films about horse racing are in production.
A movie about the life of the legendary Secretariat has completed filming and is in its final editing stages.
It features an all-star cast.
Secretariat chronicles the spectacular journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. It shows the strong connections between his Canadian-born trainer Lucien Laurin, played by John Malkovich, and jockey Ron Turcotte, born in Grand Falls, N.B., played by real life jockey Otto Thorwarth.
The story follows Secretariat’s owner, Penny Chenery, played by Diane Lane, who despite her lack of
horse-racing knowledge agrees to take over the family’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables after her father falls
ill.
With help from Laurin, she defies the odds by navigating the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be the greatest racehorse of all time.
Shot on location in Lexington, Kentucky and Louisiana, the cast includes several big names.
“I had a chance to meet with several of the movie’s crew when they were filming in Kentucky and I do wish them the best,” said Turcotte by phone.
To ensure Secretariat’s true story was told and marketed properly, Chenery turned down several offers to make a film. After hearing from Disney Films, she knew the film would be well funded and told truthfully. The company promised her the movie would be fast tracked for completion to the public.
Two other films in development are Luck, being created by horse owner David Milch, who brought the hit series Deadwood to HBO.
“As a horse player and owner, I probably spent over 30 years researching,” said Milch.
Still in talks with producers is FREAKISH, the life story of Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone — the world’s
winningest female jockey and only woman to win a Breeders’ Cup race.
SO JUST WHO IS PLAYING SECRETARIAT IN THE MOVIE?
meet CYCLONE LARRY!
The updated realease date for the movie SECRETARIAT is reported to be October of this year. DIANE LANE plays Penny Chenery.
