PREAKNESS – TALE OF VERVE IN, MR. Z OUT OF PREAKNESS PICTURE

LOUISVILLE, KY (Sunday, May 10, 2015) – Charles Fipke’s Tale of Verve entered the Preakness picture after a five-furlong work in 1:00.40 this morning at Churchill Downs and Zayat Stables’ Mr. Z, 13th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI), was withdrawn from consideration by owner Ahmed Zayat.
“I’m not running,” Zayat said in a phone interview with The Courier-Journal and Daily Racing Form. “I just don’t see any merit for that. I know he didn’t have a chance to run in the Derby. I know he was in huge traffic. But I think at this juncture I need to get him confidence. I know the horse is tenacious. I know he’s all heart. I know he’s fast. I know he was in a photo finish with Dortmund and Firing Line (in the Los Alamitos Futurity). So you would argue he’s as talented as they are, at least on paper and actuality… I think I need to build his confidence back.”
Dallas Stewart trains Tale of Verve, whose work accomplished a little after 6:30 was the fifth fastest of 25 at the distance.
With exercise rider Pedro Velez aboard and working with the Fipke-owned Lemon Drop Title, Tale of Verve produced fractions of :12.60, :24.60, :36.60 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.60.
“He is fit and fresh and we are excited to see what we have,” Stewart said after the work. “(Joel) Rosario will ride. He was on him when he broke his maiden.”

MONDAY PREAKNESS NEWS – DANZIG MOON, TALE OF VERVE CONTINUE PREAKNESS PREPARATION AT CHURCHILL

One of the first horses on a fast main track Monday morning at Churchill Downs was John Oxley’s Danzig Moon.

With regular exercise rider William Cano aboard, Danzig Moon galloped 1 ½ miles.

With a start Saturday, Danzig Moon would give Oxley and trainer Mark Casse Preakness starters in back-to-back years. Dynamic Impact, who won the Illinois Derby (G3) last year and skipped the Kentucky Derby, finished seventh last year behind California Chrome.

“We have a better gauge since he has faced these horses already,” said Norman Casse, assistant to his father. “They were better than he was on Derby Day, but we feel that he is getting better all the time.”

Danzig Moon is scheduled to gallop the next two mornings and ship to Baltimore Wednesday.

Charles Fipke’s Tale of Verve walked the shedrow a day after working five furlongs in company in 1:00.40.

“This fits right into our schedule,” trainer Dallas Stewart said of the walk day. “He’ll train Tuesday and Wednesday and fly Wednesday and won’t miss a beat.”

Nine-year-old Paso Doble made his seasonal debut a winning one with a front-running effort to capture Sunday’s $125,000 New Providence Stakes, at Woodbine.
It was the 3rd win in the race from 6 total attempts.

Trained by Mark Fournier for owners Centennial Farms (Niagara) Inc. and Craig Racing, the Bold n’ Flashy chestnut Florida bred, with Eurico Rosa da Silva up, marked the opening quarter in :22.18 under pressure from Seffeara and Sorry About That.  The chestnut rocketed a half-mile in :44.47, widening to a two-length advantage through the turn, as Phil’s Dream launched a rally from fourth position.

Paso Doble maintained his at the top of the lane and stayed on strong under steady encouragement from da Silva to notch a 2 3/4-length win.  Phil’s Dream, Canada’s champion sprinter of 2013, held on for place, 3/4-lengths in front of San Nicola Thunder. Paso Doble covered six furlongs in 1:08.77.

Fournier was pleased with the effort of the speedy Paso Doble.

“I was a little bit surprised, coming off a layoff against these kinds of horses, but he has been training forwardly and we were confident he would run a good race. He loves his job,” said Fournier.

Paso Doble banked $75,000 in victory, pushing his bankroll over the $1-million mark, while improving his record to 13-11-8 from 47 career starts.

A tale of Paso Doble…

It was trainer LAURIE SILVERA who bought Paso Doble from consignor Sue Foreman who sold the fellow for Fred Pace. The price was $5,000.
He won his career debut in 2008 for owner David Callaghan and trainer Franz Crean. In his next race, he was trained by Mike Doyle.
In his third race, he was campaigned by owner Terry Hamilton and trainer Alec Fehr before he was moved to trainer Sid Attard in 2010.
Centenntial Farms (Niagara) joined in on ownership in Paso Doble with Hamilton in the fall of 2010,  Don Macrae trained him one race and then Mark Casse took over when Centenntial became sole owner of the gelding.
Mark Fournier took over training of the gelding in 2014 and Craig Racing joined ownership.

WILSON AND BAHEN INVOLVED IN SPILL
edited press release

Jockeys Emma-Jayne Wilson and Steve Bahen were taken to Humber River Hospital Sunday after being involved in a scary accident.
The incident occurred when Allowed, with Bahen up, appeared to clip heels with On Top of the Bay during the stretch run of the 1 1/16-miles route sending Bahen to the track.  Wilson, in close pursuit of Allowed aboard Minnow Money, was thrown from her mount attempting to avoid the incident.

The chain reaction began when On Top of the Bay (finished 2nd in the race but was disqualifed and placed 8th) shifted to the right in the stretch when jockey Jesse Campbell switched to the left-handed whip. The gelding went down immediately and others scattered behind him.
Bahen and Wilson, both conscious and alert on track, were taken to Humber River Hospital for further evaluation.
Allowed looked very shaken and wobbly after the scary incident. Minnow Money continued to run but both walked back to the barn under their own power.

Both riders appear to be doing well after the spill.

“Steve seems to be in good order and we’re just awaiting x-rays,” said Bahen’s agent Ron Burke. “He’s in good spirits and wants to come back to work tomorrow.”

Mike Luider, longtime agent for Wilson, said to some media – , “We’re waiting on results from an MRI and we’re very optimistic at this point.”

A lot of excitement accompanied race 2 at Woodbine on Sunday even if it was just a 5 horse field at 1 1/16 miles in the allowance class. It marked the Woodbine debut of UNBRIDLED JUAN, a light grey colt who won his maiden at Gulfstream with a 94 Beyer Figure around one-turn and an Ontario bred Plate contender.
Luis Saez came up from the US to ride Stronach Stables’ homebred with the big pink nose. He was 1 to 9 on the tote board and sitting pretty down the backstretch as he tracked Oakton through a slow pace.
But Patrick Husbands proved why he is as smart a rider anywhere as he gave a cue to trailer FIELD OF COURAGE, owned by John Oxley and rushed to the lead before the quarter-pole. Everyone else was pushed into action but Field of Courage had stolen the race.
Breaking Lucky moved inside to outside and rallied hard at the Mark Casse trainee but just came up short while Unbridled Juan had no response and ended up 3red.
The time of 1:44.19 was a 77 Beyer Speed Figure according to DRF.
Field of Courage is improving rapidly and he is a son of champion Marchfield, who no longer stands in Ontario. The dam is Miss Crissy, dam of Good Better Best and Mi Cielo. Cavendish Investing bred the colt who was bought by Casse for about $66,000 at the local sale.

MORE SUNDAY

race 1 – ITWONTGOBAD, a chestnut Munning filly with four white legs and a wide, white face, took the lead early in this 6 furlong dash and won her maiden for Debmar Stables and trainer Ricky Griffith. Luis Contreras rode this New York bred. The heavily bet beginner lady Ekati was 2nd for Charles Fipke. The time of 1:10.81 translated into a 62 Beyer Figure.

race 3- Older horses at 1 1/16 miles for $10,000 claiming and a strong pace allowed VILLAGE DRIVE to come from miles behind to win under Tyler Pizarro for Connie and Kathy Patton. It was the 2nd win of the season for this team of jockey, owner and trainer. Village Drive, an 8-year-old, was winning for the first time  since Oct. 2013.

In this race, $600,000 earner RUSH NOW, a multiple stakes winner, was eased up, the 3rd time he has been last in his last 4 races.

Race 4- SPEEDY FOX won so easily on April 18 and then came back with an easy workout of 46 flat for 4 furlongs that he was a logical choice in this allowance race for Ontario sired older guys. The 4-year-old by Philanthropist – Foxs Consort was bred by Dr. Ron House and he is owned by Trinity Racing. Norm McKnight trains and Alan Garcia rode.  Good rally by C C Mobil in the late part of that race.

race 5- This race was marred by the accident (see above) and the winner was ENDOGENY, a Where’s the Ring gelding making his 2nd start of the year for trainer Ian Howard and owner/breeder Don Ross. The winner is 2 for 13 in his career and was moving from a sprint to his preferred route distance.
race 6 – wow, what a stretch run by TOWER OF TEXAS,  a new gelding who was off for a year and was supposed to be a serious player in last year’s Queen’s Plate. He was toiling in the back of the field in this 7 furlong race behind a slow pace and looked like he was going to bomb at 7 to 5 until he turned on the jets and flew through the stretch and caught Smart Spree. Alan Garcia rode for Tom Van Meter and Scott Dilworth and trainer Roger Attfield. The time of 1:22.52 was good for an 84 Beyer Figure.

race 7 – First win of the season for owners Ace Racing, Scott Fairlie and jockey Michelle Rainford as STARSHIP SABRINA won. This mare is a 6-year-old who was aggressive on the pace all the way and outduelled Classic LadeDah on the pace to win in her 2nd race of the season.

race 9 – an 87 Beyer Figure posted by AVIE’S QUALITY who rallied to win for Ivan Dalos and Josie Carroll in his first race since December. This is a 5-year-old horse who has had erratic form since he won the Display Stakes last fall. Luis Contreras rode
Champion ALPHA BETTOR finished last.

RACE 10 – An $8,000 claiming race with a field of 7 wraps up the card and D’FOREST DIVA ran 3 wide to get to the lead in deep stretch to win for the 2nd time this season, The Old Forester filly is owned by Racing In Front and was the 3rd winner for Debra Rombis. Gary Boulanger rode.

Wagering on Sunday at Woodbine was $2.9 million
