LONGSHOTS RUN WILD AT WOODBINE

Thursday has second breakdown in 3 racings days

Thursday’s card started out with a favourite winning, MOLINARO WARRIOR led all the way to win the Ontario sired allowance at 5 furlongs for his 2nd win in his 16th start. The Molinaro Stable gelding, by Where’s the Ring, was bred by Charles Baker.

The bad news was that early in the race, Lynne Bunting’s KEVIN RAWKS broke down after an early duel and it appeared to be quite grim. The Bold Executive colt had won $61,000 in his career.

After Molinaro Warrior won at 50 cents on the dollar, BEARCATT won the 2nd race at 60 cents on the dollar for the Bear Stables. The stakes winner was racing for just $20,000 claiming. He was not claimed. The grey 4yo is by Tapit and he had won the Woodstock Stakes in the spring.

Race 3 went to Jimmy Hatchett’s HALO BRAVE, a Halo’s Image gelding who had been a troubled 3rd in his previous race but won yesterday for $20,000 claiming to take his maiden. He was ridden by Slade Callaghan.

At 5 to 1, SISTER FRIEND won race 4 for Nick DeToro. The 3yo Mineshaft filly has won 2 of 9 this year and was winning yesterday for $9,500 claiming. She had posted a bullet 5 furlong workout since her latest outing. Steve Bahen rode the winner.

Then things got crazy. PROMISING SUN, at 113 to 1, darted clear in race 5 for maidens for $11,500 to score for Promising Racing Stable and trainer Paul Fong. The trainer, who had a win and a 2nd in just 4 starts at Woodbine, had brought the Impeachment gelding, bred by Ackie Cheng, back from Fort Erie. He was coming off a 36 Beyer Figure earned in a $5,000 claiming event. Cory Spataro was the rider.

In that race, SGT HITCHENS was dropping from maiden allowance to $12,500 claiming and was not a factor.

CHANT MY NAME was a 12 to 1 winner of race 6, a maiden allowance for Ontario sired 2yos at 1 1/16 miles. The colt is from the first crop of Survivalist, whose offspring are thriving at route distances now. The 2yo is owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, who bought the colt as a yearling last fall for about $100,000 from Kelynack Racing Stable. Chant My Name, the longshot pick in the TORONTO STAR selections yesterday, was ridden by Omar Moreno for trainer Brian Lynch.

PAYTON’S VICTORY made favourite players happy again when he won his 2nd straight race in the 7th for $12,500. The Alberta bred by Vying Victor is a homebred for Roy and Russ McLellan and he is trained by Stuart Simon.

Someone actually had the PICK 4 with that $200 dollar winner – it paid $18,000, the pool was $42,000.

The finale went to classy old NAME IN LIGHTS, a 6yo mare who was winning for the first time in a couple of seasons. She is owned by T and T Racing Team and trained by Alisn Crook. David Garcia rode the mare who was winning for $8,000 claiming.

Friday marked some pretty serious training jobs – SINCEREST won her debut for Martha and Nick Gonzalez from post 12 for $20,000 claiming. The Horse Chestnut 2yo filly was a $2,500 purchase.

The training job of the day was the Audra Cappuccitti team that had the classy 7yo mare KRYSTAL SCEPTER ready to win off a layoff of almost exactly 2 years. The Royal Anthem mare debuted at 4 and won for $37,500, raced just 5 times in 2008 and won for $20,000 and then won for $10,000 yesterday under Eurico Rosa Da Silva in his first ever mount for the stable.

How about SPRING RIDGE? This Kinshasa gelding won at 45 to 1 two races ago for $12,500 and then won yesterday at 30 to 1 for $19,000. The Roy Jones owned and trained 6yo relished the 10 furlongs yesterday and he received a well timed ride by David Garcia.

Another first timer to win was BAGANORA, a Peaks and Valleys filly out of Mon Ami Amy, who won her debut at 1 1/16 miles in that opener at the maiden allowance level. The $10,000 purchase is owned by Kelly Callaghan, who also trains.

And another longshot came through in race 9 when RUMBLE RUCKUS won for $7,500 at 12 to 1. It was surprising to see this 4yo Alberta bred wake up since he had just finished 11th for the same price and had never hit the top three on Polytrack. But trainer Stuart Simon strapped a set of blinkers on the gelding and that must have been the trick.

TODAY..

The AUTUMN is one of Woodbine’s oldest races at 103 years old heading into today’s running. This race means a lot to seevral horses – SOUTHDALE, owned and bred by Rod Ferguson, whose good friend Bob Anderson died suddenly last week, could win the Sovereign for champion older horse with a score. BIG RED MIKE, the Queen’s Plate winner, could win the champion 3yo Sovereign with a win or even a good run..

MILLS RESIGNS AS MID CEO; STRONACH NAMED TO POST

In a press release issued late

Thursday, MI Developments revealed that Dennis Mills had resigned from his post as CEO, and that the Board

of Directors had named Frank Stronach to replace him.

Mills will retain his roles as vice-chairman and director of MID. Stronach will remain chairman of the board. AI

would like to thank Dennis Mills for his extraordinary efforts during his time as chief executive officer of

MID,’ Stronach said in the release. AI look forward to working with Dennis as he continues to assist MID

going forward.@ There has also been restructuring Within the company, which has formed separate real

estate and racing and gaming divisions. Appointed to head up the racing and gaming division were: Lyle

Strachan, executive vice president of finance; and Mike Rogers, vice president of operations. MID acquired a

CANADIAN BRED 2YO WINS AT CHURCHILL

BLACK N BEAUTY, bred by Adena Springs, won his 3rd career start at Churchill yesterday by 2 3/4 lengths in 1:17 1/5 for 6 1/2 furlongs and hit earnings of $36,250. The Zyat colt was just a $2,500 yearling purchase.

EMMA’S BACK!

Champion jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, who suffered a lacerated liver after a spill at Woodbine in late August, is set to

make her return to racing on Wednesday, November 17.

The two-time Sovereign Award winner and 2007 Queen’s Plate-winning jockey (aboard Mike Fox) was thrown to the Polytrack after her mount, Flo’s Henny, fell heading into the turn for home in the five-furlong

race on August 21.

“We’re taking calls for Wednesday, it’s all systems go,” said Mike Luider, Wilson’s agent. “She breezed four horses this morning

and she’s looking forward to getting back to what she loves doing.”

Wilson, who was Canada’s champion apprentice in 2005 and 2006 (Wilson also won the Eclipse Award as the outstanding apprentice in North America in 2005), was sixth in the Woodbine standings with 60 wins prior

to her accident.

“It’s been far too long,” said Wilson. “But it was necessary. I wish I could personally thank each and every fan for all of their

support and concern. I’m very grateful for that.”

PAULICK REPORT GETS STATEMENT FROM DAVID VANCE o/b OWNER OF LIFE AT TEN

Kentucky’s Chief State Steward, John Veitch, has elected to make a public announcement saying that our horse, Life At Ten, didn’t need to be scratched from the Breeders Cup Ladies Classic because there was “no overt sign of a physical problem” Moreover, he said the stewards decided not to test her after finishing a quarter of a mile behind a horse she had beaten twice in the last four months because the test barn was too crowded.

On both counts, it appears that Mr. Veitch is in total denial or is attempting to justify the stewards’ failure to adjudicate the case properly. Life At Ten, without equivocation, should have been scratched from the race.

In particular, view at 3:30.15 to 3:30.47 and you will see Life At Ten stumble and stagger and appear weak-kneed almost to the point of falling. A little dull, you say? Now, there are three stewards who are suppose to be viewing the post parade with binoculars and via the most sophisticated video surveillance available, along with numerous ESPN cameras trained on the post parade. What’s more, the three state veterinarians are at the starting gate looking for “overt” signs. Failing to test her after the race only exacerbates the problem.
