FEEL THE LOVE
WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT WOODBINE
-Ken and Sarah Ramsey, prominent American owners, won their first race at Woodbine for 2010 when RULES OF HONOR won his maiden in race 1 for $25,000 under apprentice Omar Moreno. The colt, a Canadian homebred for the Ramseys, raced once at Gulfstream to begin his career but he was 7th for $35,000 on the grass. He is by the super synthetic sire Cateinus.-INDIAN APPLE IS is getting to be a very good filly. Not that she wasn`t before but this stakes winner was a speedball last year and now is coming from off the pace. In race 2, her 2nd outing of the season, the Ontario bred by Indian Charlie came from last at the top of the stretch, wove between fillies and then dove inside to grab the win at the wire. The allowance score was her 4th in her 10th race. She is a Frank DiGiulio Jr. homebred and Robert Tiller trains.
-U SO LUCKY was not lucky in race 3. The Bruno Schickedanz beginner bore into and tried to jump the portable rail out of the chute after starting from the rail post and was eliminated. Jono Jones appeared to stay aboard. The winner was GETTING BOLD, a 4yo by Bold Executive who was dropping to $16,000 claiming for her season debut. She is the 3rd winner for Paul Buttigieg this season.
-AUDRE CAPPUCCITTI`S barn continues to roll. PRINCESS AMDALA, making her 3rd start of the year, held off several closers to win the 4th race for $12,500 claimers, non-winners of 2. She is a Wild Again mare.
–STEVE ASMUSSEN claimed DUMBLEDORE for himself at Keeneland for $16,000 and the former Woodbine gelding came back to his old stomping grounds and galloped away to win the 5th race for $20,000. The grey gelding is not a ripe 9 years old and he was winning for the 7th time in 34 races and for the 4th time at Woodbine. Dumbledore’s former trainer Laurie Silvera then claimed the gelding for owner William Thompson.
In that same race, Janet Black, wife of trainer Ian Black, claimed Knightly Attire, who was recently claimed from the Black team in a previous race. He was 5th.
-In RACE 6, it was bombs away as MOONSHINE AMOUR (Whiskey Wisdom-Fair Amour) led all the way in his first race since his November debut to win a maiden allowance for Ontario sired older guys. The 4yo, owned by Jane Keir and trained by Lyle Morden, simply ran away from the field under Na Somsanith. He was a $19,914 yearling purchase from breeders Don and Joan Palmer, who bred Attitude Included, a stakes winner out of the same mare.
-Padraig, 2nd in the race, was in a world of trouble around the turn and into the stretch on the rail and may have been for trainer Franz Crean and another longshot from the Heste Sport/Ryan Jones team, Bound to Play at 86 to 1 was 3rd.
And GYPSY RING ran an 87 Beyer Figure to win last night in allowance company. The Where’s the Ring – Gypsy Genna fellow exploded to a 5 length score for owner/trainer/breeder Paul Buttigieg who is having an astonishing start to the season.
-SUNDAY NOTES
DAVID BELL won his 2nd race of the season when PORT STANLEY won a 1st level allowance race in his season debut. It was a super training job to get Charles Fipke and Russ and Lois Bennett`s Perfect »Soul gelding primed to win having just won his maiden by only a neck last November. GAIL COX won her first race of the season and is often the case, she did it with a longshot. MISS LOLA upset race 5, a maiden allowance, with an easy romp in the 7 furlong dash. She is by Bernstein and was making her season debut.
MIKE PINO won 2 races and STEVE KLESARIS won one to continue a domination of American trainers, at least in the first few weeks of the meeting. Klesaris sent out GOLD MEDALLION to win the 8th race, an allowance that featured Queen`s Plate hopeful BIG RED MIKE.
it was the 2nd outing for Mike in 2010 as he was 2nd in his opener and jumped a shadow at the wire. In Sunday`s race around 2 turns, Mike was seemingly all in on the turn but he kept plugging away and was not beaten far by Gold Medallion and Captain Carlos.
And the Hunderup family`s HESTE SPORT celebrated a win in race 9 when 30 to 1 GLORY BAY, by Paynes Bay,won her maiden with ease in a maiden allowance. The filly had broken very slowly in her only other outing of 2010. Ryan Jones trains.
More stuff – BILL MOTT starts his first horse at Woodbine for 2010 with Consulate heading to the gate Friday for $19,000 claiming. Mott has a string of horses here with assistant Rachel Halden. Correction – STEVE ASMUSSEN does not have stalls at Fort Erie this year.
QUEEN’S PLATE NEWS
PLATE NOMS RACE ON SATURDAY
Wando stakes draws only 5
A maiden race, allowance and Wando Stakes has spread out a number of Queen’s Plate hopefuls in races on Saturday at Woodbine. The Wando, an overnight event, just barely went with 5 horses and luckily for Sam-Son Farms, their 2 Plate horses, Giant’s Tomb and Hotep, wound up in the allowance and Wando respectively, so both get a race in.
Next weekend is the 7 furlong Queenston Stakes which will have champion Hollinger, D’s Wando, and Stormy Lord among others.
On Saturday, HOTEP, a full brother to last year’s Plate winner EYE OF THE LEOPARD will meet 4 in the Wando Stakes at 1 1/16 miles and will try to rebound from a couple of drab runs in stakes company in New Orleans. The colt has to meet up with impressive maiden winners ALCOMATCH, from Keeneland, and BEARS FINISH LINE, from Mike DePaulo’s stable. Those 2 are American-breds.
Also on Saturday, GIANT’S TOMB is in an allowance race against older horses and will try to stamp his Plate ticket.
Sam-Son also has the maiden COGNASHENE in a maiden race meeting up with Stronach Stables’ promising MOBILIZER and Earle Mack’s Plate hopeful CAPTAIN CANUCK.
Speaking of GIANT’S TOMB – have you been there? It’s an island near ear Penatanguishene, Ontario…
According to native legend Kitchi-Kiwana, the last of a race of giants, fell with a mountain in his arms which shattered into the 30 000 islands. The indentations of his shoulders can be seen on his favourite island, Beausoleil, where he returned to sleep each night. When he died, the natives covered him with rocks to form what is now called Giant’s Tomb Island. The flickering northern lights can be seen whenever his spirit visits the islands and the Great God Manitou lights fires to guide him.
GIANT’S TOMB ISLAND – no residents but it has a story to tell.

Lost in the shuffle of Kentucky Derby weekend was the opening of FORT ERIE, alive for at least 3 more years under the umbrella of the Fort Erie Consortium.
Wagering was a little over $300,000 for opening day but there were some good performances and lots of colourful horses and folks.
Thanks to Norm Files for some photos:
CACOUNA, the winning machine, set a track record on opening day of FORT ERIE, 4 1/2 furlongs in :51.46 for HIllsbrook Farm and trainer Nick Gonzalez.
PRETTY IN PINK – Former jockey now trainer Lisa Cadeddu saddled her first winner, My Name is Rachael in a maiden allowance. The filly is by Bowman’s Band and she beat a beginner in Wando Attraction.
