THURSDAY NEWS….PRINCE OF WALES STAKES – 7 may start, who was the last QUEEN’S PLATE winner not to participate in the Prince of Wales??? Can you guess??? Huge Beyer Figure horse wins at Woodbine and pays over $8.00
and… $10,000 raised in saddle towel acution for LongRun (see yesterday’s post)
WOODBINE – NOTABLE FROM LAST NIGHT’S WED. RACING
OLD BLUE EYES (Old Forester) a $1,200 yearling purchase by Pat Parente, won an Ontario sired allowance race last night with a 75 Beyer Figure. The 3yo was ridden by Justin Stein. Parente trains the colt for Star Five Stable, who clapped and cheered loudly as the horse came into the winner’s circle after the night’s first race.
The dark was bred by Jim Sabisont of Longview Farms. It was the horse’s 2nd win in 5 races.
On the grass for another allowance event for ONtario sired dudes, heavy, heavy fave CITIUS, who won a stakes race last month on the grass, could not beat older horses in the non-winners of 3. It was Terra Farms’ STEADY STUART who pressed and took the lead and held on to win his 2nd consecutive race and first on the grass. The homebred by Where’s the Ring is trained by Kevin Attard.
And yet another allowance race was a strange event since the winner paid $8 plus and he had just posted a 93 BEYER SPEED FIGURE in his last race.
LUCKY LOTTO, who adds Lasix 2nd time out and dropped to maiden claiming, won his maiden by more than 5 lengths in 1:23 1/5 and that translated into a 93 Beyer.
He rallied wide to win a first level allowance race in the 4th last night under Jim McAleney for owner Martin Cherry and trainer Sid Attard. Still money to be made with the Figs! (Incredibly, he was 3rd favourite in the race)
Things got very weird on the night when the 6th race went to MIGHTY MONARCH, a 4yo by Powerscourt racing for $11,500.
This gelding, who had been 10th or 11th in 3 consecutive races, had just been moved from trainer Laurie Silvera to trainer Darren Glennon, had the blinkers taken off and was strteching out to 1 1/16 miles for the first time. He won on the pace under Ryan Pacheco at 21 to 1 and really, should have been closer to 40 to 1.
The first half of the Late Double went to favoured KUROGANE, the one-time Queen’s Plate hopeful who bounced back last night with a win in a non-winners of 2 for ontario sired guys. He earned a 74 Beyer Figure for Chiefswood Stable and trainer Paul Attard.
The final race was strange as a big favourite bombed (Mobilideed and L’AVENUE went gate to wire on the pace for Ted Burnett and trainer Mike Mattine. The $35,000 yearling purchase had a 0 Beyer Figure last time (10th beaten 17) when down to maiden claiming for the first time. The Old Forester gal had really been dull in her 3 races but led all the way last night and was only 7 to 1.
A WALES OF A RACE
10 Nominees for the 2nd jewel of Canadian Triple Crown
A good little betting race awaits fans who will participate in Prince of Wales day at Fort Erie a week from this Sunday.
The Queen’s Plate winner will bow out but there could be a field of 7 for the 1 3/16 mile event worth $500,000. Oh to have a Canadian-bred 3-year-old right now.
In 1959, the Prince of Wales Stakes became the second race in the Canadian Triple Crown series.
The race has been run mostly every year since 1929 when LION HEARTED won the first running.
The race was a turf event for the longest tme and had a lot of weird results. It was moved to the dirt in 1988 and we have seen a few Triple Crown winners.
Recently, the race has been a gem for a little of smaller profile owners, trainers, jockeys etc. Horses like GALLANT, LE CINQUIEME ESSAI and GOLDE MOKA,.proving thrills to ‘little people’.

Local NHLer drawmaster for Prince of Wales Stakes
By BERND FRANKE QMI Agency

FORT ERIE — New York Rangers defenceman Dan Girardi will spend one afternoon of the NHL off -season walking in his head coach’s shoes.
Like John Tortorella, Girardi will be responsible for filling out the starting lineup. However, the 27-year-old Welland native will need more time for the job.
Since Hendrik Lundqvist is almost certain to start in net for the Rangers, Tortorella only needs to select the three forwards and two rearguards who will be on the ice for the opening faceoff .
As the drawmaster for the 76th running of the Prince Wales of Stakes at Fort Erie Race Track, Girardi will be picking the post positions for as many as 12 thoroughbreds for the second jewel in Canadian horse racing’s triple crown.
With the $500,000 stakes race normally attracting a smaller field than the Queen’s Plate, which started 17 contenders this year, the track’s manager of media and marketing doesn’t expect Girardi will be too busy at next Wednesday afternoon’s post-position draw.
“Fields have ranged from seven to 10, which was one of the biggest in years,” Elissa Blowe said.

FUNNY STUFF….NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
The Day at the Races: July 5

The name Allumeuse is one that will never be forgotten in horse racing.
She didn’t win the Kentucky Derby or any other famous race in the world, but she was wrongly disqualified at Saratoga one summer day in 1986.
It was the second race at the Spa on Aug. 2, before a crowd of 43,520 that saw the filly Lady’s Secret win the Whitney Handicap later that day.
Unfortunately, most who were there, or at an OTB, remember the disqualification of Allumeuse, who was placed last despite winning by a length-and-a-half.
During the race, a horse named Syntonic slammed into another, Fasta Dancer, causing a third, Utah Pine, to fall.
The stewards – who all were reassigned soon after the incident – put up the inquiry sign and after watching the replay mistakenly thought it was Allumeuse
