Jake is ready for Breeders’ Cup!
Friday there are 4 Breeders’ Cup races and a couple of locals from Woodbine are in action.
CATCH A GLIMPSE frolicked along in the slop in her gallop on Tuesday morning and everything is look good so far for the Kentucky bred City Zip filly.
She is owned equally by Gary Barber, Jeff Begg and Mike Ambler and Ambler has sold a share of his portion to Greg Lang. The trio of Ontario horsemen and their families are heading down to Kentucky (Begg is already there) for the big race and it is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime journey for the locals.
Catch a Glimpse has plenty going for her as she will start from post 4 in the Juvenile Fillies Turf at 1 mile. The turf is going to be quite soft, according to Begg, and at least his filly raced on a giving grass when she won the Natalma Stakes.
The race is loaded up with some European gals and, if you are playing Pick 3’s, Pick 4’s, you must take a look at all of them.
One, LAST WALTZ, has a nasty post position but she is co-owned by the popular ownership group in Vancouver, Swift Thoroughbreds, owned by Horatio & Jackie Kemeny and Mark & Naudia Maché. Horatio and Mark have been friends since childhood and first visited Hastings Park together during their high school days. At Hastings they became tremendous fans of the beautiful thoroughbreds and the exciting drama of racing.

ALSO ON FRIDAY, in the Juvenile Turf, Barbara Minshall and Bruce Lunsford’s SKY MARSHAL will attempt to take down some tough colts after his 2nd place finish in the Summer Stakes. The winner that day was Ontario-bred CONQUEST DADDYO who was born at Shannondoe Farm in St. Thomas. The Conquest Stable colt was bred by James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt Meeuse and no doubt they will be cheering hard for their homegrown colt.
Overseas, all the rage has been for HIT IT A BOMB who has been stunning in 2 races for trainer Aidan O’Brien. But the colt drew post 14. His felolow Euro’s have looked good in their races and they are the ones to beat on what will be soft turf.

CANADIAN-BRED FILLY SOAR and PARTRIDGE a great pair
(with files courtesy of Thoroughbred Daily News)
The popular Thoroughbred Charities of America Thoroughbred Makeover and Retired Racehorse Project was a huge success this past weekend at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
Over 150 retired racehorseS competed in events while horsepeople and fans enjoyed all types of special events and educational seminars all focusing on the re-training of the racehorse.
The grand prize of $100,000 for “America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred” went to a filly from right here in Ontario: Soar and her owner Lindsay Partridge.
A daughter of Trajectory – Pyrenee, by Mt. Livermore, Soar was bred by Gardiner Farms and is a foal of 2007. Soar sold as a yearling at the Canadian Horse Society 2008 Canadian-bred Yearling Sale for $32,795 to Ralph
Murray.
She went on to race for Murray Stable and notched her first win as a 3-year-old for a claiming tag of $11,500 at Woodbine. She would go on to find her niche at the $4,000-$5,000 claiming level, finding her way to the winner’s circle eight more times while racing for various owners at Woodbine Racetrack, Tampa Bay
Downs and Fort Erie Race Track.
Partridge, who has built much of her professional training career out of finding retired racehorses, training them in the discipline she feels suits them best, and selling them to riders looking for dependable show or recreational mounts, found Soar the way she finds many of her training prospects–via a picture
on Facebook.
“I heard about the Thoroughbred Makeover and wanted to find a horse to compete in it with because I thought it sounded like a really fun way to promote the Thoroughbred breed. I found Soar the same way I find a lot of my project horses–by seeing a picture on Facebook. I liked the look of her, so I
contacted the seller and bought her,” said Partridge. “I’m actually a jumper rider at heart, but I wanted to show off my horses’ best attributes, so I went cowgirl in the Makeover for them. Being a Canadian on a Canadian horse and winning the title of America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred is pretty cool,
eh?”

JOCKEY CLUB OF CANADA JOINS COALITION FOR HORSE RACING INTEGRITY
The Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity announced today the Jockey Club of Canada (JCC) has joined as a member. The JCC is the second international racing group to join the coalition, bringing additional support from another jurisdiction which has already implemented the type of uniform, high standards for medication testing and enforcement that supporters seek to achieve in the United States.
“The border between Canada and the U.S. is one crossed by thousands of racehorses each year,” said Jeff Begg, Chief Steward of the Jockey Club of Canada. “The members of the Jockey Club of Canada are eager to see medication reforms in the U.S. that will provide certainty and a level playing field no matter what state or track they’re headed to.”
The Jockey Club of Canada oversees the Thoroughbred breeding registry and graded stakes racing in Canada, and is responsible for the annual Sovereign Awards program and the Canadian Graded Stakes Committee. JCC represents Canada at the annual International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities Conference.
The Coalition for Horse Racing Integrity supports the Thoroughbred Horseracing Integrity Act of 2015, which would authorize an independent, racing-specific, non-governmental and non-profit organization to create uniform, high standards in drug and medication testing and enforcement for Thoroughbred horse racing.
The coalition’s membership includes major racing organizations, animal welfare groups, racing and wagering facilities and a grassroots organization with over 1,100 owners, trainers, breeders, and racing professionals.
The Woodbine Entertainment Group has announced that it has made a five-year, $100,000 pledge in support of William Osler Health System Foundation’s $100 million campaign to expand and redevelop Etobicoke General Hospital.
WOODBINE SUPPORTS ETOBICOKE GENERAL
The total financial commitment by WEG, a longtime supporter of Etobicoke General, part of William Osler Health System (Osler), will see the funds designated towards building and equipping an expanded emergency department at the hospital.
The Orlando Corporation has launched a $15 million matching gift challenge. Under this challenge, the largest ever matching challenge to benefit a community hospital in Canada, Orlando will match, dollar-for-dollar, all donations made to each of Osler’s three hospital sites, including WEG’s $100,000 pledge.
“We are extremely grateful to our many friends at Woodbine Entertainment Group, not only for this significant donation, but also for their longstanding support of William Osler Health System and Etobicoke General Hospital” said Ken Mayhew, the president and CEO of William Osler Health System Foundation. “Their generosity continues to have a significant impact on the hospital and the many people who depend on its numerous services.”
The expansion of Etobicoke General is expected to be completed in 2019 and will include:
A larger, state-of-the-art emergency department
Cardiac Care and Intensive Care Units
A Maternal newborn unit with birthing suites and a specialized nursery
A new ambulatory procedures unit
Cardiorespiratory and neurodiagnostic services
A valued and loyal supporter of Etobicoke General since its inception, WEG, through donations that now total over $400,000, has had a significant influence on areas of need designated by the hospital, including renewal and redevelopment projects, such as Diagnostic Cardiology and Day Surgery spaces.
