A WHIRLWIND OF EXCITING RACES THAT BEGAN YESTERDAY AT 9:30 A.M. eastern time came to and end at 1:45 when a mad scramble at the end of the DUBAI WORLD CUP, the world’s richest horse race went to GLORIA DE CAMPEAO at 25 to 1, edging LIZARD’S DESIRE (yes, that’s his name), who was 40 to 1.
The winner, a Brazilian-bred 7-year-old, was blasted in the last 2 editions of the World Cup (on dirt) – he was 2nd last year but far behind Well Armed – and Lizard’s Desire’s form, well, let’s say he had an approproate name.
It was a card of upsets with tons of big finishes and some bizarre events too.
In the opener, the straightaway Al Quoz Sprint, one runner went straight up the air at the break, almost hitting his head and then the announcer declared ‘a perfect start’.
Later, a wild move by jockeu Christophe Soumillon on MUSIR in the UAE DERBY nearly wiped out IZAAJ with his dive-to-the-inside move. The jockey of that colt, Willie Supple, confronted Soumillon in the jock’s room after in what what some wild footage provided.
KINSALE KING (Yankee Victor) was a popular winner of the Shaheen, a one-turn sprint. The American-bred came over from California for Carl O’OCallaghan, whose leaping and jumping during the race was fun stuff to watch.
In the same race, TIMELY JAZZ broke down badly over the TAPETA surface that is in place at MEYDAN.
SYNTHETIC SURFACES take another hit
Daily Racing Form chair Steve Crist says:
“The richest horse race in history was staged in Dubai earlier today, and it was a $10 million advertisement for how synthetic surfaces can make a complete mess of so-called world-class championship racing. For all that it proved about the quality of the contestants either individually or as a group, the results of the Dubai World Cup might as well have been drawn out of a hat.”

Mission Impazible takes La. Derby for Pletcher
One Todd Pletcher trainee loses, another wins and so it goes for the trainer who has yet to win the Kentucky Derby but has had another spring with a bagful of Derby hopefuls. Of course his big gun is ESKENDEREYA, who is in New York and looks very dominant right now.
Yesterday in New Orleans, the favoured DISCREETLY MINE, winner of the Risen Star Stakes (and a Pletcher trainee) was in contention to win the Louisiana Derby in the late stages as he battled with A Little Warm through the stretch.
But on the outside, MISSION IMPAZIBLE (Unbridled’s Song – La Paz, by Hold Your Peace) mowed that pair down late to win the 9 furlong race and a ticket to the Derby.
A $200,000 yearling purchase by Twin Creeks Farm, Mission Impazible is from the 1988 mare La Paz, dam of Grade 2 winner FOREST CAMP and Grade 3 stakes winner SPANISH EMPIRE.
The Beyer Figure assigned to the Louisiana Derby was 94. The colt had won his debut last April at 4 1/2 furlongs but missed time from that time of year to January.
Pletcher’s guns for the Derby include NINE COLTS...Rule, Mission Impazible, and Discreetly Mine, and coming up… Interactif and Aikenite in the Blue Grass, Super Saver in the Arkansas Derby or Wood, and Eskendereya in the Wood, and then the improving EXHI won the Rushway yesterday with an 87 Beyer Figure.

Meanwhile, the 11th place finish by SAM-SON FARMS’ HOTEP in yesterday’s La. Derby, the 2nd favourite for the Queen’s Plate, should essentially end his spring campaign and perhaps lead to a freshening to get ready for the Plate.
The farm’s GIANT’S TOMB seems to be a better candidate for the Plate with a recent win in an allowance race (he earned an 80 Beyer Figure).
At TURFWAY PARK, DEAN’S KITTEN, a turfer and synthetic colt, won the Lane’s End Stakes and is likely headed to the Derby. The Kitten’s Joy 3yo earned a 93 BEYER SPEED FIGURE yesterday for his win.

FATAL BULLET, Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2008, worked 3 furlongs yesterday at Woodbine on the training track in 36 3/5 as he continues his preparation for a return to action.
TASTY TEMPTATION had the bullet 5 furlong move on the Polytrack of 1:00 2/5.
