Canadian-bred graded stakes winner SQUARE EDDIE, once a Kentucky Derby hopeful, once thought of as a Queen’s Plate hopeful, suffered a suspensory injury and has been retired to stud.
The son of Smart Strike – Forty Gran, by El Gran Senor was a top 2yo two years ago but had a litany of setbacks as he tried to get to the Derby. The Plate was tossed aside in an attempt tp get a crash course to the Derby but the colt never made it.
He was entered in today’s STRUB STAKES.
Owner J. Paul Reddam said he will breed some of his mares to the colt but would do a private deal if someone was interested.

MISINFORMATION EVERYWHERE
From the moment that PATRICK HUSBANDS received the Sovereign Award for outstanding jockey on Friday night in downtown Toronto, there has been widespread reporting that his $10 million in purses for 2009 was some kind of record.
The latest came in DAILY RACING FORM today when a Fair Grounds report, mentioning that the jockey will ride at Fair Grounds this winter, said the same thing.
What is sad is that TODD KABEL (who has been taking care of ill family members) was not only the FIRST JOCKEY TO WIN OVER $10 MILLION in purses, but he won $11 million IN ONE SEASON AND THEN MORE THAN $10 MILLION THE NEXT SEASON.
Putting certain people or horses up on a pedestal for no reason is a common occurance in racing and it just gets sillier every year:

Husbands to stay the winter
Patrick Husbands, seven-time Sovereign Award winner for best jockey in Canada, has decided to hang his tack in the crowded Fair Grounds jockey colony, and was scheduled to ride his first three mounts of the meet on Saturday.

“I’m going to stay out the meet here, and get back in shape for Toronto,” said Husbands. “I can’t complain with the year I had.”
Husbands became the first Canada-based jockey to with more than $10 million in purse earnings last year, and he rode 188 winners at the last meet at Woodbine.

A few Saints hope gelding Daddy Forty Nine proves to be a winner

The New Orleans Saints will play that team with the horseshoe on the side of their helmets, the Indianapolis Colts, in Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday.
But a few of the Saints, including quarterback Drew Brees, have a horse of their own they would love to see win big down the road.
Brees, along with head coach Sean Payton, vice president of communications Greg Bensel, singer Jimmy Buffett, and the Monday Night Football crew of Mike Tirico, Ron Jaworski and Jon Gruden, are partners in a horse-racing group known as Last Mango Racing Stable. A few other Saints front office people are also involved in the venture.
Their most promising Thoroughbred is a three-year-old gelding named Daddy Forty Nine. He is the son of 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper.
Daddy Forty Nine has won three of six starts, but finished fourth in a field of six in his most recent race, last Monday at the Fairgrounds Race Track in New Orleans.

While it seems unlikely that Rachel Alexandra is going to be able to get ready in time for the April 3 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the track has offered $ MILLION if the Horse of the Year and her rival-in-print ZENYATTA both show up for the race.
Certainly tracks around the continent are scrambling to do the same…

{GISW-US & SW-Eng, $356,581}, by Devil’s Bag) was a 5 furlong turf dash in 55 4/5 yesterday at Gulfstream. Owned and trained by Wesley Ward, the filly is 1 for 3 in her career now, was a $47K 2yo purchase and was bred by Adena Springs.
Trainer TINO ATTARD has been busy at Gulfstream. He claimed ASSET from Stone Farm and trainer Mark Frostad for $25,000 from a 6th place finish on Wednesday and ALL ABOUT MAMA for $10,000 yesterday. That filly finished third to a Bruno Schickedanz trainee who was placed 1st by DQ, WOULD IF I COULD, a Florida bred by Fast n Royal trained by Mike Wright Jr.

Bred by Jim and Alice Sapara in Ontario and raced by so many different folks over the years, 13-year-old Cool N Collective is making news these days because he’s still racing.
The son of Ruhlmann0Panther Run has won 15 races and over $675,000. He won the Elgin Stakes at Woodbine and placed in that same event 3 other times. He was also 2nd in the Grade II Pegasus Stakes at Meadowlands.

Hard to let go of an older warrior

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Owner Mike Repole has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars attempting to upgrade his stable with young horses. But in the last few years, Repole has reached into his pocket time and again to keep an old, low-level claiming horse in his barn.
Repole has spent more than $50,000 between the claim box and private purchase to regain and maintain ownership of Cool n Collective, a 13-year-old gelding who will run in Sunday’s first race at Aqueduct, a $7,500 claiming event. Though records are unavailable on the subject, Repole believes Cool n Collective could become the oldest horse to win a flat race at a New York Racing Association track.
“If it was done, it was done before our lifetime,” Repole said Friday.

Horse racing has died a thousand deaths. It has died more often than Robert DeNiro’s movie characters. More than even Wile E. Coyote, who always finds himself squashed flat at the bottom of a canyon or burnt to a crisp as he futilely tries to catch the Road Runner.
Obituaries have been written and rewritten for years.
Still the sport not only persists but in many instances like thoroughbred racing at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack– still flourishes.
The question here, however, is whether Alberta’s Wile E. Coyote is going to get another chance.

While most eyes are on the Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra camps for news about when they’ll make their 2010 debuts, there’s another racing star who’ll soon be ready to make his first start of the year.
Mine That Bird, the second-biggest long shot to win the Kentucky Derby after he came charging home in the slop to rout his 18 rivals by 6¾ lengths last May, is resting comfortably at co-owner Mark Allen’s Double Eagle Training Center in Roswell, N.M.
The Birdstone gelding will begin training again sometime in March, according to the horse’s second owner, Dr. Leonard Blach, and might be pointed toward a stakes race at Churchill Downs to kick off his 4-year-old campaign.
