CARLO TUCCI picks up $155,000 2yo in Ocala, Casse buys big
CARLO TUCCI, one half of the successful TUCCI STABLES, signed the ticket for a $155,000 Ontario bred 2-year-old colt at Tuesday’s Ocala March sale. The Tucci’s, whose Midnight Aria won the Queen’s Plate in 2013 and who have scaled the heights of racehorse ownership in recent years, are uncle and nephew and based here in southern Ontario.
The colt, by Stormy Atlantic, is out of the solid Woodbine mare Clear Lake, who raced for Rob Smithen. Clear Lake, by Megas Vukefalos, earned over $250,000 and this is her first foal.
The colt sold for $40,000 to Kirkwood Stables, agent at the Keeneland September sale last September.
MARK CASSE bought horses for Conquest Stables and perhaps John Oxley (he had several purchases as agent) including an $800,000 Tiznow colt that will race for Conquest.
Casse, who signed for $1.9 million in horses, will race in New York this year and he has strings here at Woodbine, in California, Florida and Oaklawn.
Casse also has started training horses for Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation, which bought the sale topping Bernardini colt for $1.4 million.
CHARLES FIPKE bought a $725,000 Congrats filly out of Christie Village by Deputy Minister, Christie Village raced for breeder Eugene Melnyk.

TORONTO STAR FEATURE – JACK KENNEY
MAY 18 1935 – MARCH 14, 2015
It was 1964 and Ontario’s horse racing community was on its way to being globally recognized. The shiny, new Woodbine racetrack built by E.P. Taylor was a few years old, and Taylor’s great little Canadian-bred Northern Dancer was on the cusp of greatness.
That same year, Taylor hired a young Toronto lawyer named Jack H. Kenney to join the Ontario Jockey Club. During the next 40 years, Kenney played a major part in keeping Woodbine on the international stage.
A member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and one of the sport’s most influential leaders, Kenney died suddenly on March 14 at St. Mike’s Hospital in Toronto after a short illness.
He was 79.

His funeral, followed by a wake, will take place on Thursday, March 19, at 2 p.m., at the John Bell Chapel, Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation
