June 26 looming
ELITE ALEX, a solid Plate contender who has left the Kentucky Derby trail, will try to get back on track in an allowance race at DELAWARE PARK on Wednesday.
In his most recent effort, the 3-year-old son of Afleet Alex finished ninth in the Grade I Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 16. Previously, the Ontario-bred conditioned by Delaware Park-based trainer Tim Ritchey, ran fourth in the Grade II Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds on March 26. Last year, Elite Alex broke his maiden at Delaware Park in his career debut going five furlongs. He has a record of a win, a second and a third from five starts with earnings of $97,800. He has been installed as the 4-to-5 morning-line favorite in the field of seven.
ELITE ALEX, BEAR’S CHILL and the maiden JOJO’S MOJO were the 3 horses supplemented to the Plate and Triple Crown by the May 1 deadline. It cost $5,000 to make those 3 eligible for the series.
A total of 63 horses remain eligible for Plate and Triple Crown.
GOOD BETTER BEST, a recent winner on the Keeneland Polytrack, is recovering from an injury that occurred when a thunderstorm rocked his world and made him upset. The Harlequin ranches colt is trained by Roger Attfield. His Plate staus is uncertain.
QUEEN’SPLATEKITTEN and RED ACE continue to work south of the border and should make an appearance soon. This weekend is the LA LORGNETTE Stakes and perhaps we will finally see INGLORIOUS, THE winterbook Plate face.
MARK CASSE has a bunch of Plate hopefuls in ENDURING STAR, HIPPOLYTUS and CONTROL. The latter pair are Ontario sired guys who ran 1-2 in an allowance race on Sunday, the winning Beyer Figure was 70.

Ben Mondello’s Kiernan’s Legacy made every step a winning one in the featured $41,000 allowance race at Delaware Park today.
With Julian Pimentel aboard, the 6-year-old son Perigee Moon cut early fractions of 22.71 for the quarter and :45.76 for the half before completing the six furlongs in 1:09.04 over a fast main track. The Ontario-bred conditioned by Scott Lake won by 5 1/4-lengths and returned $5.80 as the second choice in the field of six.
The even money favorite, Elusive Deputy with Joseph Rocco Jr., finished second. It was another half length further back to Filled With Wonder, with Abel Castellano Jr.
The victory gave Kiernan’s Legacy his first win in 2011. His career record is nine wins from 48 starts with earnings of $140,071
