Canadian bred RIVER RUSH, winner of the Plate Trial in 2012, won an allowance/optional claiming race at Laurel on Friday for owner James Wolf. The former Stronach Stables – owned Orientate 5yo was competing for a $25,000 claiming price and he won by 1/2 a length in a 1 1/16 mile dirt race.
SHARON AND JOHN SIMMS celebrated an early Christmas present when FABULOUS BEAR won an $8,000 claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs on Friday, The son of Kentucky Bear was favoured at 2 to 1.
SCOTT FAIRLIE won the 7th race at Penn National on Friday with Ontario bred DONNA’S BOY, who edged a 3 to 5 shot in the $7,500 claiming race at 1 mile. The winner is by Sligo Bay (Ire) out of Miss Dorothy by Stormin Fever and he was ridden by Luis Belmonte. Gary Wellwood bred the winner.
JAMES PERRON STABLE celebrated a win with Ontario bred LADY MIDNIGHT at Gulfstream on Thursday. The Canadian owners lost the filly for $20,000 claiming but the Mr. Greeley – Queen Caribees, by Cozzene gal won as the favourite in this 7 1/2 furlong turf event. She was bred by Sean Fitzhenry and it was the first win of the meeting for Canadian rider Luis Contreras.
RICHARD LISTER was also a winner at Gulfstream when MY COUSIN FAY, a Kentucky bred by Sharp Humor, won the $12,500 seventh race. Trained by Peter Walder, the filly was odds-on and won by 12 lengths and she was claimed.
Canadian champion RIDING THE RIVER, previously owned by the late Derek Ball and Dave Cotey and Hugh Galbraith, was 2nd in a $62,500 claiming race in Gulfstream’s 8th race. It was the first time the graded stakes winner had been in for claiming since he began his racing career. Now owned by Commonweath Stake, the gelding was 1 1/4 lengths back of Aripeka in the 7 1/2 furlong grass race at 22 to 1. It was his first race since April. Riding the River is closing in on $1 million in earnings.

AMI’S FLATTER, owned and bred by Ivan Dalos, worked 5 furlongs in 1:01.10 at Palm Meadows on Thursday.
