Dissecting the field

The news that last year’s Mile winner MONDIALISTE will not return for a battle against the mighty mare Tepin took a lot of air out of the race next Saturday but it will still be interesting to see if anyone can challenge Robert Masteron’s great mare.

Tepin will have her final workout tomorrow morning at Saratoga if the weather is good.

So who is going to bite the bullet and tackle the Mark Casse trainee as she makes her first trip to Canada?

Three locals make up the 8 – GLENVILLE GARDENS, TOWER OF TEXAS and PASSION FOR ACTION – a stalker and two closers who ran in the Play the King Stakes recently with ‘Gardens getting a great trip just off a soft pace.

Glenville Gardens just posted a career best Beyer Figure of 98.

Tower of Texas has been second in 2 straight races to Glenville – he has posted a 101 in the past and will love the distance. PASSION FOR ACTION looked great in the late spring when half a length away from winning 4 straight stakes. The distance should be okay for him and he can post a 100-103 Beyer if things set up well for him.

AROD – Group 2 winner at Ascot in 2015 and 2nd to SOLOW in Group 1 Sussex in July 2015 but went off form after trip to Australia. Recently led late and then 3rdin the Group 2 Celebration Mile.

FULL MAST – highly regarded Group 1 winner (in 2014) won his North American debut at Belmont with 102 Beyer – 4th with traffic at Woodbine in the King Edward then 3rd at Saratoga in Lure with 103 Beyer

MR OWEN – 6th in this race last year at 8 to 1, soft turf. He was 2nd in a Group 3 recently in France, one of 2 in the race for Qatar Racing.

MUTAKKAYEF – 3rd in Juddmonte INternational Group 1 last time and had 2 wins before that. 13 in the top 3 in 13 races.

Turns back to 1 mile, loves distance and almost beat Mondialiste last year in race before latter won Mile.

MUTAKAYYEF (blue and white silks,, chestnut horse along rail in video) bypasses Sunday’s Clipper Logistics Boomerang Stakes at the Curragh in favour of a trip to the Ricoh Woodbine Mile.
The William Haggas-trained five-year-old will drop back down in trip for his first taste of racing outside of Britain in the Grade One contest on September 17.
After winning a Listed contest on his seasonal bow at York, the Sea The Stars gelding followed up with victory in the Group Two Summer Mile at Ascot before finishing third in the Juddmonte International when stepping up to 10 furlongs at York.
Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: “Mutakayyef is going to Canada next weekend for the Grade One Ricoh Woodbine Mile.
“As we have Awtaad running there (Boomerang Stakes), we needed to get Mutakayyef back on track and Sheikh Hamdan thought he didn’t want to go there as well with Mutakayyef.
“Ground is very important to this horse as he wants fast ground and hopefully he will get it there.
“I thought he ran well at York. If he had not been carried across the track, he would have been a little bit closer.”

B.C. DERBY TODAY

 

Not only is Saturday’s BC Derby/Oaks Day card the richest of the 2016 thoroughbred season at Hastings Racecourse, but the fields in six stake races are also being cited as the most competitive on this year’s calendar.

The marquee event is the 71st running of the Grade 3 BC Derby for 3-year-olds with a purse of $150,000. The morning line favorite Opportunistic could win an additional $25,000 in bonus money for his Emerald Derby victory over previously unbeaten Barkley at Emerald Downs on July 31.

Opportunistic (9-5), owned by Mark DeDomenico and NATHC, also won the Chris Loseth and Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial this year at Hastings for Hall of Fame trainer Troy Taylor and veteran jockey Dave Lopez.

The nine-horse field includes two-time sprint stakes winner Stanz in Command (9-2), owned by Robert Scott and trained by Charlene Miller. Leading rider Richard Hamel stays with Stanz in Command, a combination that won the $50,000 River Rock Casino and Jim Coleman Province earlier this year at Hastings.
Owners Swift Thoroughbreds Inc. are pinning their hopes on Silvertown (3-1), trained by Swift’s exclusive trainer Dino Condilenios and ridden by Rico Walcott. Silvertown has not missed the board in four stakes in the Pacific Northwest this year since being claimed at Keeneland for $75,000 this past April.

Swift Thoroughbreds is deep in 3-year-old fillies talent and have three entered in the 54th running of the $100,000 BC Oaks with morning line favorite Snuggles (8-5) seeking her fifth consecutive stakes win this season at Hastings. The previous victories, all with $50,000 purses, were the BC Cup Dogwood, Supernaturel, Emerald Downs and Ross McLeod.

The other two Swift entries in the Oaks are Chianti (12-1) and Omi (15-1). Not to be overlooked are Emerald Downs invader Brookys Star (5-2) ridden by Leslie Mawing and locals Victress (7-2), Hong Kong Jockey Club stakes winner trained by Rob Gilker and ridden by Amadeo Perez, as well as Greg Tracy-trained CU At Eau Claire (5-1) with the ever-dangerous Hamel in the saddle.
Princess O’Prado (12-1) trained by Mike Anderson with Silvino Morales up, rounds out the seven-horse field.

 

 

SHAKHIMAT on farm, SOMETHING EXTRA retired

Thoroughblog has learned that graded SW SHAKHIMAT, the early Queen’s Plate favourite for 2016, is sidelined for the remainder of 2016. Dan Gale and Richard Hogan’s handsome 3-year-old had throat surgery following the Queen’s Plate but has gone to the farm.

Eight -year-old gelding Something Extra, a multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire, was retired from racing this weekend. His trainer, Gail Cox, reported on Twitter that the son of Indian Charlie had suffered some bone bruising, and that he would hopefully be returning next season as her stable pony.

Bred in Kentucky by Gulf Coast Farms, Something Extra was originally purchased for $85,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale by Cox for herself and part-owner John Menary.

Racing mostly at Woodbine, Something Extra recorded his first stakes win in the G2 Connaught Cup in 2012, the repeated in that race in 2013. In 2014, he won the G2 Highlander Stakes, and in 2015 he captured Keeneland’s G3 Shakertown. After a handful of graded stakes placings in 2016, the gelding retires with an overall record of 9-10-7 from 39 career starts, with earnings of $1,015,394
