CHICAGO NOW – STAKES PREVIEW BY PAUL MAZUR

Harlanate looks to Conquer Santa Ynez
January 1st serves as a universal birthday for all race horses.  Regardless of foal date, everyone gets a year older.  And with that, the sophomores of 2014 now become four-year-olds thrust into open company.  And the juveniles become three-year-olds as well.  Those three-year-olds are the focus of this week’s races at Picks & Ponderings, including Nicolle Neulist’s examination of the Jerome Stakes from Aqueduct.  Here, we go to the opposite coast and opposite gender.  While the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct is on the road to the Kentucky Derby, the Santa Ynez Stakes from from Santa Anita Park sits on the road to the Kentucky Oaks.

Named for the town of Santa Ynez, California, read more by clicking link below…

DYNAMIC SKY TRIES SAN GABRIEL

Eastern invader Dynamic Sky and locally-based Tom’s Tribute head a strong field of nine older horses in Sunday’s Grade II, $200,000 San Gabriel Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Santa Anita.

Trained by Mark Casse, who now has a stable of 28 horses in Arcadia, Dynamic Sky has been idle since winning the Grade III, 1 3/8 miles Red Smith Handicap over a yielding turf on Nov. 15 at Aqueduct.  An Ontario, Canadian-bred 5-year-old horse by Sky Mesa, Dynamic Sky was second in his only try at 1 1/8 miles on turf, which came five starts back in the Grade II Nijinsky Stakes at Woodbine on July 19.

Like Tom’s Tribute, Dynamic Sky enjoyed a productive 2014, as he earned $432,361 from two wins, two seconds and two thirds in nine starts.  With an overall mark of 20-5-4-5, he would appear to be best suited if he gets a stalking-type trip in the San Gabriel.  Owned by John Oxley, Dynamic Sky has overall earnings of $938,797 and will seek millionaire status with Corey Nakatani engaged to ride for the first time.

The first eight finishers will all share in this new disbursement program released today.

The 6-12 program will now be 9-12 with a payout of $300.00 and will be payable on all the same condition races as in 2014.

Stakes races will now be paid thru the first eight finishers as well with 6th, 7th and 8th place finishers receiving $1000 to help offset nominations fees, etc. on all $50,000 stake races.  Stakes races that are more then $50,000 the 6-8 finishers will receive more e.g the BC Derby 6-8 finishers will receive $4000.00.

These two programs are in addition to the Ship N Win Program which is one of the finest in North America.

The three associations should be commended in making every possible effort to increase our horse population  for 2015 and some assistance for breeders for building for future.of horse racing in our fine province.

The associations have worked diligently to put together some of the best programs available in North America.
