STRONG WIN FOR NOHOLDINGBACK BEAR
Woodbine’s 4th day of racing on Sunday was held in bright sunshine and warm temperatures, spring is here!
The Tapeta continues to play quite slow but also fair as winners came from everywhere and it was a formful day indeed.
Bear Stables’ NOHOLDINGBACK BEAR was a dominant winner of the Woodstock Stakes for 3-year-olds, winning from off the pace set by invader SHOGOOD, who ended up 2nd.
Trained by Mike DePaulo, the white faced fellow is a pretty picture and he got his first stakes win after 3 runner-up placings in good races. He was coming out of a rapid stakes race won by Manhattan Dan, who had already gone on to win another stakes race.
Noholdingback Bear was a $25,000 ‘short’ yearling purchase and is a Kentucky bred by Put It Back out of Pleasant Quality by Elusive Quality. Pleasant Quality was bred in Ontario by Carol Shaddock and Lesley McLean and she has had 5 other foals for American breeder Jerry Mamgotchian.
The colt’s Beyer Figure was 89 for 1:10.22.
More Sunday stuff from Woodbine…
Race 1- a 6 1/2 furlong claiming race for $20,000, non-winners of 2 and heavily favoured ALPHA HIGH,making his 3rd start off a long layoff and coming in from 2 Florida outings, was a flop as he was a modest 3rd behind the pumped up BOURBON FIRST, the 2nd winner for the Denyse McClachrie stable this year. Ryan Kerbel owns the Old Forester gelding who was making his season debut off some good workouts. Justin Stein was riding his first winner of the meeting.
race 2- a $10,000 claiming race for non-winners of 3 and speedy DREAM ON JOHNNIE made easy work of the field for owner George Ledson and trainer Danny O’Callaghan. The Ontario sired Where’s the Ring gelding is a 4yo who was making his first start of the year. David Moran was the winning rider. Dream on Johnnie was even money. In that race, Grom reared up at the start and hit his head, lost his rider, Jermaine Bridgmpohan and ran loose briefly. He was deemed to have had an unfair starts.
race 3- Class reigned in this allowance race for Ontario sired fillies as BELLA FABIANA rallied wide to win her season debut. She has been 5th in the South Ocean Stakes in her 2yo finale after a troubled trip. Patrick Husbands rode for trainer Nick Gonzalez and Mike Romeo of Terra Farms, was in the winner’s circle with the filly’s namesake, wife Fabiana, as was Matteo Romeo, the couple’s 6 week old son. Apparently Matteo is supposed to attend every race of Terra horses now as the good luck charm.
Bella Fabiana is by Court Vision from Include Katherine by Include.
race 4- Interesting race to start pick 4. Paul Pompa and Darwin Banach’s EQUITY SHARE was favoured for this maiden race for $32,00 claiming. The Super Saver gelding, a 4yo, was originally a $240,000 purchase as a 2yo but troubles getting him to the races landed him in Canada.
It appears the problem with the gelding could be his gate ability. He stood in the gate for several seconds when the doors opened before he came out. He was miles behind the field but did have a wonderful rally so he does have some abilty.
The winner was SUN DAZE (of course, on a Sunday!) for Martha Gonzalez and Nick Gonzalez. The bay Concord Point gelding is an Ontario bred from a Henny Hughes mare, bred by Donver Stables.
He led all the way through 5 furlongs to win big under Emma-Jayne Wilson.
race 5 -a maiden $8,000 claiming race was won by heavily favoured FLASHY RUBY for owner and breeder Doug Hoggard and trained Kisa Burry. The Bold n’ Flashy 4yo is out of a Feu d’Enfer mare, Double D Ruby. Sheen Ryan scored her first win of the season on the filly, in her first day of riding in 2016.
This race was one of several that had many bad incidents at the start with several horses being scrunched and steadied at the start.
race 6 – maiden fillies for $25,000 claiming and TESSIER wore down Super Story to win her maiden in her first race at Woodbine. This Haynesfield filly debuted at Keeneland in April 2015 and then did not race until last month in Florida. She was taking a big edge here and won at 3 to 1 for Alice Sapara and trainer Josie Carroll.
race 7 – Claiming $10,000 and the 10-year-old TEVEZ, owned by Wilf Jones, was odds-on despite his habit of breaking slowly. At five furlongs, a slow start can be costly and while Tevez broke well, he was wiped out soon after by Hopehard and Chris Husbands and the speed ran away. It was SARATOGA BOY who zipped away for Jennifer Armata-Barrett and trainer Ross Armata. Juan Crwford won his first race of the year on board this Saffir gelding.
race 9 – an allowance race for non-winners of 1 other than/non-winners of 2 at 6 1/2 furlongs was won by newcomer SECRETARIAT HUMOR, a chestnut filly by Distorted Humor from Secretariat’s Soul, a full sister to Perfect Soul. This 4yo was bred in Kentucky by Charles Fipke, went through a Goffs sale at age 2, rertpoedly brought a bid of 600,000 pounds but she never left the Fipke fold. She raced 8 times for Fipoke in Europe and won a 1 3/16 mile Polytrack race.
She rallied from well off the pace for Emma-Jayne Wilson to win for trainer Brian Lynch, who races at Belmont and has his horses at Woodbine in the care of an assistant.
Race 10 – a nice maiden allowance, open, went to D’ORO PARADISE, another Charles Fipke runner, this one ridden by Alan Garcia for trainer Roger Attfield. The Medaglia d’Oro filly is a Fipke bred and she rallied in time to collar Conquest City Girl and Sweet Crimson.
Trainer Attfield is reportedly to have surgery on his foot in mid-week.
Wagering on Saturday at Woodbine was $2.6 million and $3.085 was wagered on Sunday.
