CANADIAN STUFF
QUEEN’S PLATE HOPEFULS were in action on the weekend (see yesterday’s post also) but not a lot happened. Next weekend should shed some light on some things anyway.
BOWMAN’S CAUSEWAY was a flat 3rd in an allowance race around one-turn in a one-mile race at Gulfstream but it was an okay effort. His Beyer of 75 was modest but he still looks like a 10 furlong, Polytrack runner against Canadian-breds.
BEAR’S CHILL (Artie Schiller), from the Bear Stable, made his 3yo debut yesterday at 1 1/16 miles on the GUlfstream grass but the colt was caught up in a strong pace and all the speed faded. The Reade Baker trainee wound up 4th beaten 4 lengths with a 71 Beyer Figure.
BLACK N BEAUTY (Devil His Due) is training again after he was pulled up in the Hutcheson Stakes. The Canadian-bred Plate hopeful may still run in a Kentucky Derby prep for Zayat Stables.
BLACKSTONE BAY (Stormy Atlantic), a full brother to Leonnatus Anteas, makes his debut for trainer Mark Casse tomorrow at GUlfstream. IMHOTEP (Yes, almost like Sam-Son’s Hotep last year who ran in the Plate) had a quick Palm Meadows breeze yesterday and is getting close to his 2nd career start. The Todd Pletcher trainee was 2nd in his career debut with a 78 Beyer in a 2 turn grass race.
He is by Giant’s Causeway and is a Zayat homebred.
In other news, QUIETDETERMINATION (El Prado) won his maiden for Sam-Son Farms’ at Fair Grounds Monday in a $30,000 claiming event. He is out of the top mare Quiet Cleo and is a 5yo trained by Mark Frostad.
MIAMI DECO, last year’s Breeders’ Stakes winner, came off a long layoff and was 8th beaten 5 lengths in a turf allowance Monday at Gulfstream. He is owned by Jim and Susan Hill of Dewinton, Alberta.

LOUISIANA DERBY DAY PREVIEW

Fair Grounds racing secretary Jason Boulet said he always expected at least 10 entrants for the Louisiana Derby, though by the middle of last week, there hadn’t been that many commitments.

But the phone in the racing office was ringing frequently in the past few days. On Sunday, 13 horses, headed by Risen Star winner Mucho Macho Man, were entered for the $1 million, Grade II race.
The Louisiana Derby on Saturday will be the first $1 million race in New Orleans. The race will be the 10th on a 14-race card that will start at 12:10 p.m. Post time for the Louisiana Derby will be 4:55 p.m.

Veteran horseman excited about horses conditioned in Aiken

Mike Keogh was among the Thoroughbred trainers conditioning horses this winter at the Aiken Training Track.
The veteran horseman was the trainer of the 1996 Sovereign Award winning Sprinter and Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Famer Langfuhr and the 2003 Canadian Triple Crown winner and Aiken Trained Horse of the Year Wando. Both horses were owned by Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame member Gustav Schickedanz.
Among the horses that Keogh has been training this season include Mobil Unit, a bay gelded son of the multiple stakes winner Mobil. Mobil Unit is owned by Gustav Schickedanz and Don Howard.
The 4-year-old gelding broke his maiden in a 6-furlong race at Woodbine over turf course listed as firm on Aug. 3, 2009, winning by 33âÑ4 lengths during his juvenile campaign. He placed third in the 11âÑ16-mile Cup and Saucer Stakes on the turf at Woodbine on Oct. 18, 2009 to close out his 2-year-old year

Spiral Stakes on Saturday
FLORENCE, Ky. – The field for the Grade III Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park on Saturday has attracted an overflow crowd of hopefuls.
Preference to run is determined first by graded stakes wins, then by stakes wins, and then by career earnings. Eighteen are reported to be pointing toward the race but only a dozen can start. Entries will be drawn Wednesday, March 23, at a cocktail reception in the Maker’s Mark VIP Tent at Turfway, 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Cross-Canada horseback ride to help raise funds and awareness for LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society
In the spring of 2012, Amanda Cryer, Debby Jobin, and possibly up to two other riders will be setting out on horseback in an attempt to ride from the East Coast of Canada to the West Coast. Starting off in Nova Scotia, the girls are out to raise money and awareness for LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society. This trip will take about 6 months, and the girls will be relying on the close-knit Canadian community and the Canadian world-renowned generous spirit to help along the way.
Our mission is to raise funds and awareness for LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society through a cross-Canada ride on horseback. This ride is also dedicated to the memory of Ken Thornhill.

Square Eddie returns to the breeding shed

SQUARE EDDIE, the former British-trained son of Smart Strike who set a new 6½f track record at Santa Anita in January, has resumed stud duty.
The five-year-old retired to stand at Vessels Stallion Farm in California last year and covered 34 mares before returning to training with Doug O’Neill.
Square Eddie turned heads by breaking the Santa Anita course record on his comeback in January, but failed to build upon that in two subsequent starts, finishing last in the Donn Handicap in February and beating just one horse home in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile this month.
Owner Paul Reddam told the Daily Racing Form that he plans to send Square Eddie between 20 and 30 mares of his own. “I know everyone says this, but his foals really do look fantastic,” he added.
Square Eddie’s stud fee is $5,000, with deals available.

NOMINATE FOR THE HALL OF FAME!
The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, which represents both standardbreds and thoroughbreds, is seeking public nominations for both horses and people to be considered for induction in 2011.
Public nominations close on Wednesday, April 13.
Following the nomination and election process, the 2011Hall of Fame Inductees will be announced on Tuesday, May 17.
Inductees will be honoured at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Gala Dinner, held at the Mississauga Convention Centre in Mississauga, Ontario on Thursday, August 18.
There are five categories of inductees in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame as follows:
Male Horses: ‘Canadian-bred’ or horses ‘foreign-bred’ who have distinguished themselves while racing for Canadian interests and have raced at least once in Canada, or who have had an exceptional influence on Canadian horse breeding as sires.
Female Horses: ‘Canadian-bred’ or horses ‘foreign-bred’ who have distinguished themselves while racing for Canadian interests and have raced at least once in Canada, or who have had an exceptional influence on Canadian horse breeding as broodmares.
Jockeys, Drivers and Trainers. Candidates nominated as jockeys or drivers shall have been ‘retired’ for at least two consecutive calendar years; or if they are ‘still active,’ must have obtained their driver’s or jockey’s license at least 20 years prior to the year in which they are considered for nomination and be in at least their 50th year. Candidates nominated as trainers shall have been ‘retired’ for at least two consecutive calendar years; or, if they are ‘still active’ must have obtained their trainers’ license at least 20 years prior to the year in which they are considered for nomination and be in at least their 55th year.
Builders are persons who include, but not limited to Breeders, Owners, Media and others who meet the eligibility of Article Four of the Rules & Regulations governing Nomination & Election to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
Veterans: Veterans are horses, whether alive or deceased, whose careers concluded at least 20 years prior to the year in which they are nominated.
All nominations must be made in writing, accompanied by detailed documentation that would support the nomination, and submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee, Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, 1-2150 Meadowvale Blvd., Mississauga, Ontario.
