On June 9 1973, SECRETARIAT won the BELMONT STAKES BY 31 lengths.
On June 9, 2012…
If you are in any involved in horse racing, or just love it, like it or are a sports nut, Saturday’s BELMONT STAKES, which will take about 2 1/2 minutes to run, is the dream event.
From all over, the team surrounding this one-time $11,000 colt has intrigued, inspired, annoyed, you name it. Interesting and fun, controversial and questionable, but the colt does not know any of this.
He just knows how to win.
I have to trace back to February when I first started writing about this colt and his Canadian leanings, with Mario won on him in the Robert Lewis for Reddam. Then finding out that the colt’s sire, Flower Alley, had that cool story about how he was bought by Eugene Melnyk. And that the colt’s 2nd dam, FORCE FIVE GAL, raced in Canada for trainer JIM DAY.
Yes, we all want another. No matter what. Tracks all over will celebrate the race and it will be a long, nerve wracking day with the late post time.
FORT ERIE racetrack has made up beer mugs that light up I’LL HAVE ANOTHER when filled up, very cool.
Other tracks will have lots of stuff with the colt’s named emblazoned everywhere. Hopefully we will have reason to treasure these come 6:45 Saturday night.
Check in for updates!
