Casse, Donver shell out for 2yos, Canadian bred sells for $300K
While a New York-bred colt by FLATTER sold for $925,000 (he was a $90,000 yearling, gulp!), Canadianbased horsepeople were busy collecting up some youngsters at the March 2yo sale, Day 2, yesterday in Ocala.
MARK CASSE, purchasing as agent, was the 2nd leading buyer of the sale by gross dollars spent. He declined to say for whom he was buying but last year it was the same thing when he paid big money for 2yos (DELIGHTFUL MARY) and the buyer was JOHN OXLEY.
CASSE paid $220,000 as agent for a Canadian bred by First Samurai too.
VERN AND DONNA DUBINSKY, who raced top filly CARELESS JEWEL a couple of years ago, paid $310,000 for a filly by the same sire, Tapit. The filly was a $97,000 yearling last fall.
STEVE OWENS bought a Canadian-bred colt, perhaps with an eye to next year’s QUEEN’S PLATE.
JOSHAM FARMS AND YVONNE SCHWABE of Ontario bred hip no. 306, an Indian Charlie filly who they sold last fall at Keeneland for $95,000. Yesterday she brought $300,000 and will race for Frank Fletcher Racing.

DR. MORGAN L. BROSNAN
ON ST. PATRICK’S DAY, LET’S CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF DR. MORGAN BROSNAN who passed away at his home on Tara Farm, on February 11th, 2011 at the age of 85.
He is survived by his loving wife Marina (nee D’Onofrio) and family in Ireland. Predeceased by his sister Sr. Mary Borromeo (1987) in Ireland.
Dr. Brosnan graduated from the College of Surgeons in Dublin, qualifying as an M.D. After studies in Manchester and Southhampton, where he specialized in E.N.T., he emigrated to Canada receiving a fellowship in Otolaryngology at the University of Toronto. Additional studies took him to New York City and further training in Otology brought him to St. Catharines, where he practiced for the past 50 years.
Dr. Brosnan bred and raced horses in Canada for many years – the 1978 Pointifex horse AN CURRAC comes to my mind. An Currac was a promising young horse who stuck in my memory with his impressive looks and those flashy silks with green shamrocks that Dr. Brosnan had made.
Dr. Brosnan, more recently, is best known in racing circles as the breeder of LAST FEATHER, a 1979 daughter of Vaguely Noble – Quill and thus a half sister to notables such as Caucasus and One for All. Last Feather was a Group 3 winner in England and 3rd in the English Oaks in 1982.

Newspaper editors tell those of us in this “save horse racing campaign” that horse racing doesn’t deserve the little space they have left in newspapers. Instead, pages and pages are devoted to a non-professional basketball and football event, so much so that even the Breeder’s Cup was preempted on ESPN by an overtime Northwestern football game. We hear more on the internet or in a newspaper about the poor moral choices made by so-called football, basketball, golf, and baseball heroes than we do about the heroes who gallop onto racetracks at 5:00 in the morning practicing for races. They do NOT make poor choices; they deserve some air time. Their back-stories are full of honor and passion–the right kind. Let’s bring back the excitement, beauty, elegance of horse racing, NOW. Our brilliant athletes, both horse and jockey, sacrifice a lot on those beautifully manicured race tracks–the thoroughbred loves to run.

Small breeding operation hits with Broodmare of the Year in B.C.
KAREN AND RON BIDNIAK are new to thorougbred racing and breeding but that did not stop them from having the BROODMARE OF THE YEAR in British Columbia for 2010.
Just 5 years after buying CLASSADALA, the daughter of Regal Classic had 2 stakes winners in 2010.

“The year 2010 was a once in a lifetime year for us as Thoroughbred breeders,” said Karen Bidniak.
“Our 4 yr old filly CLASSIC ALLEY KAT ( by Katahaula County out of Classadala ) finished 2010 with 6 wins, 1 win at Golden Gate, & 5 wins in a row at Hastings making her the 2nd leading horse at Hastings for 2010. She earned over $ 56,000 for the year & won the trophy awarded to Top Claimer ( over $ 15,000 ) for 2010 in BC.
Our 2 yr old filly VICTORY WITH CLASS ( by Storm Victory out of Classadala ) finished 2010 with 4 starts & a record of 3 wins & 1 2nd place. These included 1st in The Sadie Diamond Futurity, 1st in The BC Cup Debutante & 2nd in The Lassie Stakes earning her over $ 107,000. She was named the BC Bred & Open 2 yr old filly of the year in BC.”
Certainly these fillies as well as other horses from the Bidniak operation are ones to watch for in 2011.

JOBS AT FORT ERIE!
FORT ERIE, March 16th…The management team for the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium is pleased to announce their 1st Annual Job Fair which will take place on Saturday, March 26th. There are over 30 positions that need to be filled before the 114th live racing season gets underway on May 7th. Those people who are interested in applying are asked to bring their resume, including references, to the racetrack’s Clubhouse between 10am and 2pm.
Departments with available jobs include; Maintenance, Food and Beverage, Security and Administration. Since many of the positions are seasonal, students looking for summer employment may find the job fair of tremendous value.
“We have such a wide range of positions available, everything from dishwashers to accounting clerks,” said Greg Claroni, Fort Erie’s Human Resource Manager. “It’s a great feeling to confidently open the doors to the local community and encourage employment, especially when the venue is such a huge part of our town’s history.”
Not only will the race track be accepting resumes for current available positions but management will also be accepting resumes in order to prepare for jobs that may become available in the future.
“We are optimistic that the job fair will have a large turnout,” said Chief Operating Officer, Rick Cowan. “It acknowledges our commitment to the 2011 season and the great year that we have planned.”

HorsePlayer Interactive is now available in Manitoba
TORONTO, March 16 – HorsePlayer Interactive (HPI), Canada’s first and only legal online account wagering service, is now available in Manitoba thanks to an agreement announced today between the Manitoba Jockey Club and HPI’s parent company, Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG).
HPI is now available in every province in Canada.
Not only are Manitoba race fans now able to wager on more than 150 racetracks around the world, they also are able to watch those races on their computers, call up race replays, download race programs and participate in exclusive HPI contests at HorsePlayerInteractive.com.
“This is a very significant milestone for Woodbine Entertainment Group,” said Sean Pinsonneault, WEG’s Chief Operating Officer.
“It now means that HPI is available coast-to-coast across Canada. Much of the credit for the agreement though goes to the Manitoba Jockey Club which is committed to bringing the best possible account wagering product to the province’s horse racing customers.”
The Manitoba Jockey Club, a not-for-profit entity, will conduct a live thoroughbred racing meet at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg from May until September.
“What makes this service particularly exciting,” said Sharon Gulyas, vice-president of finance and gaming at Assiniboia Downs, “is that people everywhere in Manitoba now can enjoy playing the races. It’s as close as their computers.”
Assiniboia Downs offers simulcast wagering from dozens of race tracks from about 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. every day.
