THREE STRAIGHT DURHAM CUPS – SHADY WELL one tough mare

A little bit of history for a Saturday morning. This weekend’s SHADY WELL and VANDAL Stakes are named after two top horses in Canadian racing history, one a great race mare and the other, a strong stallion influence.
Shady Well (foaled 1929 in Ontario) was a Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse. Owned and bred by the Seagram brothers’ Seagram Stable, she was sired by Purple Shade. Her dam was The Wishing Well whose sire was the British champion, The Tetrarch who was voted Britain’s greatest two-year-old of the 20th Century.

Herb Lindberg was one of Shady Well’s jocks

Racing at age two, Shady Well won the 1931 Clarendon Plate and finished second in the Coronation Futurity Stakes. Among her 15 career wins, against her female counterparts Shady Well won back-to-back editions of the Maple Leaf Stakes in 1932 and 1933. However, she is best remembered for her three straight wins between 1932 and 1934 against male horses in the Durham Cup Handicap which she followed up with another victory over males in the 1935 King Edward Gold Cup.

VANDAL

With files from Lou Cauz

By the middle 1870s, Nelle Meade Stud in Nashville, Tenn. was one of the most important Thoroughbred breeding operations in the South. A great deal of the stud’s early success was due to the stallion Vandal, who was by the important English stud *Glencoe.
Their bkood, when crossed with that of America’s leading sire, Lexington, enjoyed remarkable success and shows up in the pedigrees of so many 19th century champions.

Vanda’s most important son was Virgil, sire of Kentucky Derby winners Vagrant, Ben Ali and Hindoo. Virgil also sired Vigil (he also has a Woodbine stakesrace named after him) and Tremont, thought to be one of the great 2-year-olds of his time and unbeaten in 13 races as a juvenile.
The first Vadall Stakes was run at FORT ERIE and was for fillies.

This is a neat image from celebrity blogger/photographer Mr. Will Wong of the 2-year-old filly BRAVE AUTUMN ROSE winning her career debut at Woodbine yesterday. Neat looking daughter of Silent Name (JPN) from stakes winner Heat It Up. From the red-hot Catherine Day Phllips barn.
