BLOWN AWAY

It is the time of year when the winds come howling in, the rain and wet snow follow and, well it seems as if it is dark all the time.
Mother Nature has really taken things out on horse racing as tough gusts led to a cancellation of races a week ago last Friday and then again this past Sunday. The  news release regarding the cancellation on Sunday notes that the jockey’s had decided the riding would be too dangerous. One race was run on Sunday.

For Friday and Saturday –  almost $9 million was bet on those Woodbine cards – wow!

It has been an odd stretch of days in Ontario horse racing with issues with horsemen, riders, etc. and it seems as if the Ontario racing Commission stewards are going to be very busy for a spell…

WOODBINE WINNER NOT ELIGIBLE?

Saturday’s 9th race at Woodbine, won by I’m A Kittihawk, is under review and will be addressed at a meeting on Wednesday with the Ontario Racing Commission stewards.
The dispute is whether the winner, a filly by Tomahawk, was eligible for the 1 1/16 mile race.

ORC rules note that it is up to the licensee to make sure a horse is eligible for race it is entered in.

The race was a non-winners of 1 other than maiden or claiming or restricted allowance or non-winners of 2. I’m A Kittyhawk had won a maiden race, the Lady Angela Stakes and, most recently, an Ontario sired non-winners of 3 allowance.
Trainer Franz Crean maintained Sunday that the filly was eligible citing that the Lady Angela was restricted to Ontario sired fillies.

“The Lady Angela is restricted,” said Crean. “And (officials) could have called any time before she ran. It’s a complicated issue now, the race has been run, there was parimutuel betting.”
The Lady Angela, however, is not an allowance, but a stakes race worth $125,000.
I’m A Kittyhawk was 5 to 1 in a very contentious six-horse field and she beat 2 to 1 Revenge Is Mine, trained by Catherine Day Phillips.
Those who bet Revenge is Mine to win or in Pick 3’s, Pick 4’s will be out of luck if the winner is disqualified as expected.

COMING UP – THE AUTUMN STAKES ON FRIDAY!

Champion older could be on the line (although COMMANDER from out west is a serious and deserving contender) as Alpha Bettor tackles Ultimate Destiny and James Street in the Autumn Stakes, which has been re-scheduled for Friday.

WOODBINE WRAP
