CUP AND SAUCER DAY! BUNTY LAWLESS DAY!
Canadian racing fans love the big 2-year-old races in the fall as we get an early peek at some of the classic conteners for the following year.
The Cup and Saucer is on the grass and was first run in 1937.
The race was known as Mrs. Orpen’s Cup and Saucer Handicap until 1947 and then the Orpen Cup and Saucer Handicap from 1947 to 1949.
Now, the race has not exactly been a precursor to Queen’s Plate success. Do you know who the last winner of the Cup and Saucer – Plate double was? Answer at end of this post.
Today’s race is a very competitive field with a pair from the Conquest team – the well regarded Conquest Enforcer being the 3rd choice in the early odds. Recent winners Springhouse, Shakjimat and Scholar Athlete are contenders and Hammers Vision will try to bounce back from a terrible trip in his latest.

the great Canadian-bred BUNTY LAWLESS is honoured today with the always-exciting 1 mile grass race named in his honour. It goes as race 6 with a competitive field including last year’s winner SAN NICOLA THUNDER.

Robert Marzilli’s Caren, whose only loss in her career was a super third in the Grade 3 Natalma Stakes, won the Victorian Queen Stakes on Saturday at Woodbine, the first of three holiday weekend cards.
The bay 2yo by first crop sire Society’s Chairman (Not Impossible-Ire), the filly tracked Pure Purity through 23.08 and 46.12, kicked clear and then held off an unlucky Crumlin Spirit. owned by Dura Racing and Mike Doyle.
The time of 1:10.46 was good for a 72 Beyer Speed Figure (preliminary).
Jesse Campbell rode for trainer Mike DePaulo. Caren, a $45,000 Kentucky yearling was bred by Shanndoe Farm of James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt-Meeuse in ONtario.
“I’ve been saying it for multiple races,” said Campbell. “I never had that worry that she wouldn’t rate. A couple of those races that she was in front, we weren’t going that fast. Nothing rank about her. She listens to me and waits until I give her the cues. She’s a racehorse.
“It (the Natalma) was just a tougher race. She rated very kindly in that race. I thought she ran a tremendous race. My first comment to Mike was she ran a winning race. She’s shown up every time. She’s a sweetheart.”
Added DePaulo, “She looked like she switched leads a little (in mid-stretch). I don’t know if she lost a little concentration. But Jesse got her rolling again and off she went. Maybe she’ll have one more (start this year). We’ll try to stretch her out again and see how that goes.”

Trainer Reade Baker won the Daily Double as Huntington Stud Farm and Parick Mooney’s NASHVILLE KNIGHT won the first race for $40,000 claiming at 6 1/2 furlong on Polytrack (the races came off the grass). The winneris a Hunginton bred by Bold Executive out of Quiet a Knightmare by Ascot Knight and he is 2 for 5 in his career, having won his debut on the grass in June.
Luis Contreras, who is aiming to give Eurico da Silva a real run for leading rider honours, got the win.
BEAR’SWAY won his maiden in race 2, a 2yo allowance for non-winners at 7 furlongs. The Kentucky bred by Tizway added blinkers and Jesse Campbell rode for Bear Stables. The colt was making his 3rd career start. His win earned him a 65 Beyer Figure.
Old timer RUN TO THE BANK won his first race of the year with a rallying run in a 1 1/16 mile main track race (it was off the turf) for $37,500 claiming. The Wando 7-year-old was one of 2 winners on the card for owner and trainer NICK NOSOWENKO and it was the 10th win for Run to the Bank. who was ridden by Luis Contreras.
Mike DePaulo also won 2 races as STILL KRZ had a better start to the race, an allowance for Ontario-sired runners, and he led all the way, holding off a fleet of runners who battled for 2nd. The winner is an Old Forester 3yo owned by Joe DePaulo and Frank Russo. Sylon Stable and partner bred the gelding who is 2 for 6 in his career. The Beyer Figure for 1:16.80 was good for a 73 Beyer Figure.
Congratulations to trainer MARGARET DENNEY who won her first race at Woodbine for 2015 and 5th of the season with MIRACLEONTHIRTIETH at 11-1. The winner, owned and co-bred by Gail Lunan, was ridden by Simon Husbands and it was her first win in her 7th start of the season.
KENTUCKIANA and Jim McAleney won race 6, a maiden allowance for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs. The 4yo by Stormy Atlantis was just edged a neck in a $19,000 maiden claimer in a previous race. It was the 2nd win for Nick Nosowenkofor the day.
NIIGON’S TURN flew past the field from off a hot pace and ran a career best 88 Beyer Figure in this allowance/optional claiming race. The Niigon gelding, trained by Stuart Simon for Chiefswood Stable, was coming off a 2 month break and switching from turf to Polytrack and he was a surprise winner at 10-1. Contreras gets his 3rd win.
Exciting race here, an 83 Beyer Figure for this allowance/optional claiming event and GLENVILLE GARDENS won by half a head for Janice Attard and Sid Attard. The Street Cry gelding was the 4th winner for Luis Contreras of the day.
TRINI LIME won the last race for maidens, $16,000 claiming, for Derek Chin and trainer Dan Vella. The winner was hustled from the gate and that was a winning move by jockey Alan Garcia.
