CANADIAN HORSE RACING HALL OF FAME NIGHT
The common thread on Thursday night at the annual Canadian Horse racing Hall of Fame dinner and ceremony was that there were a lot of good people, and very good horses, honoured.
On the thoroughbred side, jockey RUSSELL BAZE was eloquent, BARB MINSHALL was thoughtful when talking about her late husband Aubrey, CATHERINE DAY PHILLIPS was proud when she talked of JAMBALAYA, PIERRE LEVESQUE was short and sweet on his family’s horse, L’ALEZANE and BOB COSTIGAN was warm and fuzzy when accepting for his mare ARRAVALE.
“This is really something (Aubrey) had worked for for a long, long time,” said Minshall.
“He was born in Guyana, and came here from Trinidad with nothing. He made it all happen.
“Only his dreams and determination made him succeed in what he wanted to do. Unfortunately, he never got to see the true result of his breeding program.”
To this writer, preserving the history of horse racing in Canada is so important to the greatest sport in the world. And it was cool to see lots of folks in attendance who shared in a good, albeit, lengthy night.
It was 3oth anniversary of the birth of CAM FELLA, one of the great racehorses of any breed, anywhere.
Surely none of us that are not in the standardbred industry knew how dominant this little guy was, he was a monster folks. The video of his career was handed out and it is worth watching.
Standardbred driver JODY JAMIESON was a hoot as autioneer for the live auction which featured an I’LL HAVE ANOTHER halter, a Langfuhr season and other items. Active in buying some cool stuff on the night was a who’s who of the industry including Patrick Husbands, Glenn Sikura, Emma-Jayne Wilson, and others.
Popular track owner CHARLES JURAVINSKI was funny when accepting his induction but his speed did go on for quite a long, long time.
LOU CAUZ was presented an award for his services to the Hall of Fame and Jim Bannon was an excellent host.
Many speakers took the opportunity to speak about the plight of the industry in battling the provincial government while standardbred driver Chris Christoforou thanked those who supported him during a recent addition battle.
The Hall of Fame is important, seeing and hearing about the horses and the people from the past, is important, and it is not a bad night. It just needs to be shorter.

STORY ON GOVERNMENT’S SLOTS/TRACKS DISMANTLING PLAN that just makes us go..argggghhhh
Ontario moved on slots at racetracks program before it knew economic impact, MPP claims
Mercury News Services…
GUELPH — The provincial government killed a horse racing support program days before it received a confidential economic report with information on what that would do to Ontario’s equine industry, MPPs Ted Arnott alleges.
“We’ve long suspected the government hadn’t done its homework . . . didn’t have the facts,” Arnott said Tuesday.
The advice to the provincial government’s Cabinet says quashing the 13-year-old Slots-At-Racetracks program at 17 locations next March would cost the industry 3,500 to 5,800 jobs and reduce Ontario’s gross domestic product by $200 million to $400 million a year.
In fairness, it also reports reallocating slots funds of $345 million a year to health care and education from the agricultural sector would raise Ontario employment by 5,700 to 6,700 jobs and boost the economy by $360 million to $380 million a year.
Minister of Finance Dwight Duncan press secretary Aly Vitunski stated in an email response: “At the end of the day we need to ask ourselves whether the government should be in the business of healthcare and education or horseracing.”
Vitunski added her government “is committed to reviewing all programs and assets in order to reduce the rate of spending growth.”
The program since 1998 has given the horse racing industry $3.7 billion in government support, including $345 million last year, she continued. “That’s more money than we spend on water and road safety and more than 10 times the amount the governments of Alberta, BC and Manitoba provide to their horse racing industries combined.”

BRITISH COLUMBIA – MERRITT PRODUCES WINNERS
By Ian Webster – Merritt Herald
It was a trifecta of successful racing by Nicola Valley thoroughbreds at Hastings Park on B.C. Day, Monday August 6.
Leading the charge was P.S. Touchdown, owned by Pat Gormley and Shirley Telford of Telford Farms, located just west of Lower Nicola in the Sunshine Valley.
The six-year-old mare, with last-minute jockey Jeff Burningham in the saddle, raced to a three-length upset victory over Orchid’s Silver in the 1 1/8-mile $50,000 B.C. Cup Distaff Handicap.
“Enrique Gonzalez was supposed to ride the horse, but he was injured the day before in a race and wound up at the hospital,” stated Gormley. “He was treated and released, but the medication he was given would never have passed the pre-race test on the Monday so we had to give Jeff the ride at the last minute.”
