TIME TO RE-CHARGE

The wild week of Queen’s Plate news and action and racing is over and now it is time to re-charge and get ready for nice grass races, 2yo races and then the PRINCE OF WALES on Tuesday July 29 at Fort Erie.

Who will show up for the ‘Wales is a guess at this point but it would make sense that WE MISS ARTIE comes back, he handles dirt okay, and perhaps Ivan Dalos could have a very strong hand if he starts AMI’S HOLIDAY and even the filly ARAGORN AMI (a stakes winner on dirt).

It will be interesting on Tuesday to see who is nominated to the Canadian classic.

Four stakes races this weekend at Woodbine.. two juvenile races and a grass stake and the BISON CITY, a former Fort Erie race (named for the city of Buffalo) that features some gals who have been chasing Lexie Lou.

Today, Steve Owens and Empress Stables’ SEFFEARA, fresh off the debut win with an 82 Beyer Figure, should be tough to catch in the Clarendon, a race won by Dancer’s Image in the 60s.

The Passing Mood is interesting as the conditions call for stakes winners to carry extra weight.

ON RAINBOW BRIDGE would carry 128 pounds in the turf sprint if she goes but she may be scratched.

CRISTINAS HALO and EXECUTIVE ALLURE are the quick ones to run down.

Canadians out of town include SAM-SON FARMS’ DANCE AGAIN at Arlington and SHARP SENSATION for Reade Baker and Jim and Susan Hill at Parx.

Some re-caps news from the past week:

Names in the news include SHEENA RYAN, the apprentice rider who has improved by leaps and bounds in 2014 and NORM MCKNIGHT, whose stable has been on fire this season. In fact, McKnight and Ryan combined to win the first race on Wednesday night with the Forestry filly HABEEBEE, owned by Knightquest and T & T Stable. The filly won for $12,500 claiming at a nice 8 to 1.

That was a nice maiden win by the well bred UNIKAT in race 3 on Wed. evening. The Galileo (Ire) colt is out of Dreamtheimpossible, by Sadler’s Wells, and he won the 10 furlong maiden allowance over Bangkok with a 74 Beyer.

Race 6 was won by 30 to 1 shot SPIRIT OF SAMURAI, a Bold Executive colt who rallied in time to win for $8,000 claiming for G Giammarino and trainer Cesar Zajaczkowski. Ryan rode this grey colt.

Race 7 – the first win for FIREWITHDESIREin a couple of years. The Old Forester 4yo won this allowance race at 7 furlongs in her 4th race of the year for Rockstone Investment and S and S Herzog. Steve Attard trains and Justin Stein rode.

FRIDAY..

Jockey Ryan won the first race as she rallied Moonshine Martini from last in the $10,00 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles for Wynsum Stable and trainer Franz Crean. It was Crean’s first win of the season. The Beyer Figure of 73 for the 5yo Mobil gelding was one of the highest for the afternoon.

JENNA BRAY won her first race at Woodbine and 2nd race of her career when guiding Winston Penny’s WALES END to victory in race 2 for $12,500. Bray had won a grass race at Fort Erie last weekend. Don MaCrae trains Wales End.

TOP PROSPECT ended a long winless streak with a turf sprint win in race and he posted the day’s best Beyer Figure of 86.

More McKnight and Ryan in race 5 – HES A SLY ONE, owned by Polo Management, won his maiden for $11,500 at 7 furlongs. The 4yo by Philanthoopist was bred by Wendy Rose.

McKnight is 35% with horses turning back from routes to sprints.

A grass maiden allowance sprint was an eventful race with REMEBEL acting up pre-race and then blowing the break. ADVENTURE AT SEA won the race under David Moran for Jim and Susan Hill. Tab REJOICEFUL as a horse to watch from a troubled trip.

The last race on Friday was a turf sprint for fillies and mares for $32,000 and MISTRESS GALLOP enjoyed a dream trip under Chantal Sutherland Kruse and won with a 77 Beyer. The mare ended a long winless streak and she is owned by Ace Racing and RiJack Stables.
