CTHS Canadian Sales Stakes Series with Annual Purses Totaling Over $1 Million
The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) is extremely excited to announce the expansion of the Western Sales Stakes series to include Ontario thus making the series a truly Canadian initiative. As a result, any Canadian-Bred yearling passing through any CTHS yearling sale in 2018 will now be eligible for the Sales Stakes in any Province.
The expansion of the series was ratified by the CTHS boards in the Provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario. The program is intended to truly celebrate the Canadian-Bred and provide increased incentives for buyers to attend and buy at all the Canadian sales. In addition, it is anticipated that the series should increase prices at Canadian sales which will be beneficial for all consignors. More importantly, the CTHS believes that the field sizes in the Sales Stakes will improve as a result of the increased eligibility.
The new Sales Stakes program is designed to build a Canadian Series and promote the Canadian-Bred Thoroughbred. The CTHS intends to work collaboratively with the racetracks to ensure that races are appropriately space to allow horses to participate in the races in multiple Provinces.
The CTHS sales for 2018 will kick off with the Manitoba sale to be held on August 19, 2018 followed by the Ontario sale on August 30, 2018. The British Columbia sale is scheduled for September 11, 2018 and the season concludes with the Alberta sale on September 16, 2018. For information on the CTHS sales visit www.cthsnational.com.
Commencing in 2018, all Canadian-Bred Yearling Graduates of CTHS Provincial Sales, that have met the eligibility requirements within their respective Provinces, will now be eligible to run in Sales Stakes offered across the country in 2019.
Provincial Sales Stakes Eligibility, Sale Dates & Sales Stakes Races Offered:
Yearlings must meet Sales Stakes eligibility requirements in the Province in which they ran through a CTHS sanctioned yearling sale. In addition, if required the yearling must continue to meet eligibility requirements in the Province in which they sold. The current eligibility requirements by Province are as follows:
BRITISH COLUMBIA: a yearling is eligible for the Sales Stakes series that passes through the BC sale where the full commission and nomination fee is paid to the CTHS and an annual nomination amount is paid to remain eligible. The Canadian Sales Stake series is only open to Canadian-Breds.

Canadian Sales Stakes Series Eligibility:
Once all the Provincial Sales Stakes Eligibility has been met the following conditions apply:
Out-of-Province Nominations – Nomination to an out of Province sales stake (not in the Province where the yearling sold) will be the responsibility of the owners who will pay $750 to nominate, $750 to enter and $1,000 to start. Note that in Ontario the difference between the listed nomination, entry and starting fee charged by WEG and the nomination, entry and starting fees charged per the above will be paid directly to the CTHS Ontario at the time of nomination. In addition, in the event that races are over subscribed, preference will be given to horses that passed through the sale in the jurisdiction in which the Sales Stake is being held. For example, CTHS Ontario sales graduates will have preference for the Sales Stakes races in Ontario
Implementation – Canadian bred yearlings passing through the CTHS Yearling sales in 2018 that meet the eligibility requirements above will be eligible Canadian Sales Stakes Series. The inclusion of Ontario in 2018 does not affect the eligibility of Sales Graduates from previous years who will remain eligible for the Western Canadian Sales Stakes Series. For clarity, Sales graduates from previous years who are eligible for the Western Sales Stakes Series are not eligible for the Sales Stakes in Ontario.
Sales Stakes Dates – Where possible, the CTHS Provincial offices will work collaboratively to attempt to schedule the Sales Stakes in each Province so that we can eventually create a series that allows owners to participate in the sales stakes in multiple Provinces.

DETERRING THE USE OF PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES IN HORSE RACING IN CANADA: TELL US HOW WELL WE ARE DOING
Monitoring and deterring the use of prohibited substances that could illegally boost the performance of horses during races is a critical component of maintaining the integrity and fairness of horse racing in Canada. The Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA), housed within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, has an important role to play in this area. But how well is the CPMA doing? This is a key question that has led the Agency to undertake a review of all of its activities. Understanding what is currently working well and where improvements can be made is fundamental in ensuring that the work of the CPMA remains relevant and effective.
Plenty of documented information will be consulted during the review process, but it is critical to gather the actual views of those on the front line of horse racing. To engage these individuals, the CPMA is working with a research firm, PRA Inc., to administer a short on-line survey. The hope is that horse owners, trainers, grooms, and other individuals involved in horse racing will take just a few minutes to add their perspective to the review. Understanding the realities of horse racing requires more than data, statistics and reports. It takes the knowledge that comes from the experiences of those for whom horse racing is a commitment and a passion.
