CANADIAN TRAINER JASON PASCOE PREPPING HORSES IN OKLAHOMA

One of Ajax Downs’ rising stars, trainer Jason Pascoe, is currently training two dozen Quarter Horses at Sallisaw Training Centre at Blue Ribbon Downs in Oklahoma, and will soon be moving the stable to Remington Park for some early training races.

Pascoe, a former equestrian rider who began training Quarter Horses in 2006, was the second leading conditioner at Ajax Downs in 2017 by QROOI points. Pascoe collected 285 points for 24 wins, 26 seconds and 28 thirds from 122 starters. Perennial leading trainer Joe Tavares led in 2017 with 384 points with 28 wins from 283 starts.

It was the second straight year Pascoe sent out 24 winners during the Ajax meeting, a career high total. His purse earnings of $344,812 in 2017 marked a career high.

The owner of GFR Racing in Pontypool, ON with partner Bryanne Langford had a memorable 2017 season sending out stakes winners LS Prince and Too Much White plus High Point 3-year-old gelding/stallion Maryland Magic (edging LS Prince) and High Point 2-year-old fillies AJ CHICK IN 15 and ISLAND VODKA, who tied in that category.

Bolstered by a strong set of horses from owner Milena Kwiecien of Burlington, ON, Pascoe and Langford expect to start some if the barn’s young horses in training races at Remington in early February.

“We will be moving to Remington at the beginning of February and will doing the schooling races,” said Langford, who is also a director of the QROOI. “We have some paid into all three Futurities at Remington.”

All of the Pascoe horses in Oklahoma were being ridden by Ajax jockey Ed Walton but Walton recently suffered an injury which will sideline him until the 2018 season begins.

Langford said they are excited about a lot of the 2-year-olds in the barn this year. “My favourite right now is a 2 year old filly named Stripper Dust. Milena bought her at the Heritage yearling sale in September.”

Stripper Dust was purchased for $12,500 and is a daughter of Lousiana Senator (sire of LS Prince) from the Grade 1 winning mare MIRANDA FAME by Dash Ta Fame.

Pascoe also trains for Gary McNichol (owner of 2yo Colt/Gelding runner-up Too Much White) and has a few of his own horses.

QUARTER HORSE RACING INDUSTRY PROGRAM 2018-2019

The 2018-19 Quarter Horse Racing Industry Development Program (QHRIDP) has been approved by the Ontario Racing Board of Directors. The 2018-19 QHRIDP was planned based on the recommendations of the industry representative Quarter Horse Advisory Group.

The main QHRIDP components will remain similar to prior years, with the 2018-19 program projected to provide over $3.5 million in total purses and incentives.

New to the QHRIDP, a Mare Breeding Incentive will be introduced as a new program to encourage breeding of QH mares in Ontario. The goal of the new program is to increase the future racing population by providing a $1,000 incentive to eligible participants upon breeding a mare. To accommodate the budget expenditures for the Mare Breeding Incentive, the Breeders Awards and Stallion Awards were cut by 10% to $400k and $40k, respectively.

The Third Start Bonus, which provides a $1,000 incentive to the trainer of record on the completion of three starts at Ajax Downs during the season, will be continued into 2018-19. The incentive will introduce a maximum cap of $10,000 to any one trainer.

To support increased program participation, late enrolments will now be allowed subject to a late fee. The fee for filing a late Stallion Enrolment (after January 15 for active stallions) will be $200. Broodmare enrolments may be filed after foaling, with no time limit, upon paying a late fee of $200 and providing proof of residency.

Equine Guelph Offers 150 FREE Short Courses for Grooms and Trainers in Horse Racing

Guelph, Ontario – Equine Guelph announces the free offering of the new ‘Gut Health & Colic Prevention’ online course to the first 50 grooms and trainers to register from each racing sector in Ontario: Standardbred, Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing. The three-week online course will run this winter from January 22 – February 11, 2018 on Equine Guelph’s new online training platform, The Horse Portal.

According to the 2016 Equine Guelph Horse Racing Industry Survey, gut issues were ranked as the number three health issue behind respiratory issues and injuries. Not only is colic the number one killer of horses, but it is a major issue facing the horse racing industry. Excessive amounts of grain in the diet and forage variation are thought to contribute to an increased risk of colic and other gut issues. Changes in stabling, exercise level and stress may also cause an increased risk of colic.

“Educating the horse racing community on how to reduce the risk of colic and gut issues will be extremely valuable to grooms and trainers,” says Hugh Mitchell, Chair of Ontario Racing. He adds, “This training will also benefit the health and well-being of the elite equine athletes as well.”

The three-week online short course will be flexible and practical with content appropriate for the racing industry. The course will be delivered from respected experts from the horse racing community. For the first time, trainers and grooms from the three sectors will come together in discussion groups to share expertise and experience with each other.

“Offering the ‘Gut Health & Colic Prevention’ course at no charge will be an appealing way to engage the racing community to try out flexible, online learning on The Horse Portal,” says Gayle Ecker, director of Equine Guelph.

To register, go to www.TheHorsePortal.ca/OntarioR acing and apply the appropriate coupon code for the free course valued at $95. Registration for the 150 free courses will be administered on a first-come-first-served basis to the first 50 trainers and grooms from each sector. Coupon code: ORacingQHghc

This program is an online training partnership between Ontario Racing and Equine Guelph, with funding provided by Grand River Agricultural Society. Project partners include: Central Ontario Standardbred Association, The Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario, Ontario Harness Horse Association, Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario Inc. and Standardbred Canada. The online course is sponsored by Intercity Insurance Services Inc. and Capri Insurance Services Ltd.
