Vacant house on Windfields property burns down in Oshawa
Property graffitied same day as fire breaks out

REKA SZEKELY / METROLAND
OSHAWA — An early morning fire on the Windfields Farm property in Oshawa has destroyed a vacant home.

Oshawa deputy fire chief Steve Boyd said firefighters got the call at 6:39 a.m. on Sept. 23, likely from someone passing by on the road on Simcoe Street North.

“They saw some flames visible,” he said.

The home is located well inside the property and is just on the outskirts of the main cluster of buildings at the heart of the former horse farm to which the lengthy main driveway leads. The building bears the number 21.

Mr. Boyd said 17 firefighters worked on the fire, and both Oshawa and Whitby tankers were used to bring water to the scene as there was no hydrant hookup.

SEA MOON WORKS AT NEWMARKET
Canadian International could be up next for Juddmonte boy

White-faced bay 4yo SEA MOON, 2nd in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf to St Nicholas Abbey would be an exciting visitor to Woodbine!

from Sportinglife.com

At Newmarket, SEA MOON continued his progression towards an international Group One excursion as he worked with lead horse EAGLES PEAK on the watered gallop on Racecourse Side.

It was the third time the pair have accompanied each other in the last week and a half.

Eagles Peak set the pace and when he quickened a furlong and a half out Sea Moon’s response was not immediate but at the finish he’d drawn to the other horse’s girths.

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

Sea Moon began his 2012 campaign in the Listed Southern Daily Echo Tapster Stakes on firm ground at Goodwood on 26 May. Starting the 2/7 favourite and held of the sustained challenge of Dandino to win by a head. In the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot four weeks later, he was made 2/1 favourite against a field which included the Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden. Racing on soft ground for the first time since his win in the Great Voltigeur, Sea Moon took the lead two furlongs from the finish and accelerated clear of the field to win by three and a quarter lengths from Dunaden, with Red Cadeaux in third.[7]
After the win, described by the Daily Mail as “hugely impressive”,[8] Stoute announced that Sea Moon would return to Ascot for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes a month later. Sea Moon started 2/1 favourite for the King George, but finished fifth of the ten runners behind Danedream.

It will be a skimpy field from A LOCAL STANDPOINT for the International, especially is Joshua Tree and Sea Moon both come:

SHELLEY BROWN – TRAINING HISTORY

How many women trainer’s have won titles at Canadian tracks?

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS

Shelley Brown made history Sunday at Assiniboia Downs, becoming the first woman to win the leading trainer title since the racetrack opened 55 years ago.

“If you had told me I would be in this position four years ago, I would have been in disbelief,” said the Regina-born Brown. “Back then I had just begun to train my own horses, have a little fun with it, and see if that was what I really wanted to do, but it has gone really well.

“I have always believed it’s hard to succeed in a male-dominated sport, so I couldn’t be more proud at this point. I count my blessings and I don’t take it for granted. In this game you take the good when it comes, because it can be a very humbling sport. So you can’t let it go to your head.”

Paul Nolan, from Rugeley England, was named top jockey.

On the last day of the 2012 season Sunday, Nolan, 50, slugged it out with 23-year-old Melfort, Sask., jockey Jennifer Reid, and three-time Downs leading jockey Rohan Singh, to win that title. Leading by four wins heading into the last 10 races, Nolan won only one race compared to Reid’s four, but that was enough. He finished with 76 wins. Reid had 75 and Singh finished third with 72.

ASSINIBOIA WRAPS UP 55TH SEASON:

“We are very pleased with the season. Our on-track wagering numbers were encouraging and attendance was through the roof again,” said CEO Darren Dunn.
The 2013 season will see some changes at the track, as crews moved in last night to begin a Clubhouse renovation, which will see upgrades to the VLT area and race book.

BALOOGA BULL wins again, taking the Gold Cup by 12 lengths with an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. The Kentucky bred by Flashy Bull wrapped up Horse of the Year honours – would be cool to see this guy in action out east. He has won his last 3 races by a total of more than 30 lengths!.

How cool was the Walk for Cancer at FORT ERIE?

Raised $5,000, fans walked the famed track and heck, who would not want to walk it when it will close forever Oct. 30?

THOUGHTS ON THE MORNING LINE ODDS from EQUINOMETRY.COM

The Morning Line: Odds Are We Could Do Without It

At some point in your life you have (or will) come across a process that seems so outdated that you wonder why it still exists.

More likely than not when you question it the response will be because that is the way we have always done it.

Being a person that questions everything this response makes my blood boil.  Just because it worked fifty years ago does not mean it works today.

The horse racing industry has many processes that fall under that category but most of them would involve a significant financial investment to change.

There is one, however, that would cost nothing to change and could be changed today.

or THESE THOUGHTS ON MORNING LINE ODDS..
(yours truly prefers this argument!)

“Knowledge is power. Even a morning line has power in that it can be a teaching instrument that could grow the game through understanding. The game’s hard enough, even when bettors are guided by sophisticated oddsmakers.” – John Pricci

KABEL WINS AT AJAX – Champion Thoroughbred jockey rides $29 winner!

FROM RACINGFUTURE.COM:

Isn’t horse racing just for rich people?

Often called, “the sport of kings,” horse racing has been tagged as a sport for royalty and thus is also perceived in the minds of many as a sport only for the rich. While there are indeed some extremely wealthy industry participants the vast majority of those involved be they owners or fans are far from rich.

Many owners are involved with only one or two horses and enter into group purchase agreements or syndicates in which each owner contributes a specified amount to purchase and maintain their horse. A recent study has concluded that up to 60% of all US-owned racing Thoroughbreds are owned by partnerships like this.

One Canadian example is Ray Bouchard who’s passionate about what he sells for a living – tractors – and what he enjoys as his sport – horse racing. Ray used to go to the track as a kid to join in the excitement. As an adult, he became interested in fractional ownership where he could put a small amount of money into a group partnership and participate in racing through part ownership. After making the decision to become a part-owner through a company called Team Valor, Ray had the biggest racing thrill of his life when one of his horses, Animal Kingdom, won the Kentucky Derby in 2011. As a part owner, Ray took home part of US$2.1-million prize. ..
