UP WITH THE BIRDS –  a cold play in Coronation

The smallish but powerful UP WITH THE BIRDS is the latest 2yo male star on the Canadian racing front thanks to a strong win in the prestigious CORONATION FUTURITY yesterday at Woodbine.
The Sam-Son Farms-bred colt is one of numerous Queen’s Plate contenders for 2013 along with UNCAPTURED, DYNAMIC SKY and RIVER SEVEN.

The son of Stormy Atlantic flew from last place and past favoured STAR CONTENDER to win the 1 1/9 mile race in 1:51, good for an 81 BEYER SPEED FIGURE.
He is the first foal for the winning mare Song of the Lark, by Seeking the Gold.
Song of the Lark is a daughter of millionaire WILDERNESS SONG so there is a lot of pedigree power there.
UP WITH THE BIRDS is a song by popular band ColdPlay.

Also on yesterday’s card. JAMES STREET, owned and bred by Eugene Melnyk, looked stunning before his Autumn Stakes (GII) run and he ran to those looks. The El Prado horse was up in the last few strides, once he got out of a traffic jam, to beat PATRIOTICANDPROUD and Sam-Son’s HOTEP for his 6th career win. He posted a 92 Beyer Figure. Patrick Husbands rode this 5yo for trainer Josie Carroll.

JAMES STREET ($478,000) is from a Sam-Son Farms’ female family. His dam Alleynedale is out of Sam-Son’s stakes winning Vice Regent mare IN MY CAP. in My Cap produced many winners for Sam-Son.

JAMES STREET, ears pricked!

KEENELAND BITS

Canadian mare featured in THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS’ NOTHING BUT NET

MURANI, in foal to OLD FORESTER, sells for $180,000 yesterday at Keeneland to Ted Burnett’s JOSHMAN FARMS.

Hip Name Status Price ($)

1345 Murani i/f Old Forrester 180,000 (10, Distorted Humor–Grand Splash, by Bucksplasher)
Consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, Agent I
Purchased by Josham Farms Ltd.

This mare actually represents two Nothing But Nets. At last year’s Keeneland November Sale, she was sold open for $32,000 to Machmer
Hall’s Carrie Brogden. About 10 minutes after Brogden signed the winning slip, however, she agreed to resell the mare to the Canadianbased
Denny Andrews for $40,000, netting her $800 for every minute she owned her. This year, Murani’s value increased greatly when her first foal, the juvenile Dynamic Sky (Sky Mesa), won the Simcoe S. at Woodbine and finished second in the GI Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity–he also ran a solid sixth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last week at 18-1 odds–and Andrews’s initial faith in the mare was rewarded

RICHARD LISTER bought Canadian bred FIRST CIRCLE for $37,000 through agent Tanya Boulemetis. The mare is a Langfuhr gal, stakes placed and in foal to Court Vision. She was bred and raced by Gus Schickedanz.

PAUL BUTTIGIEG paid $37,000 for stakes placed LET’S FORGET IT, a Where’s the Ring racing or broodmare prospect who raced for Pin Oak Stable.
REGIS STABLES (Nat Rea) continued the shopping spree, buying a $125,000 weanling filly by Exchange Rate.
HUNTINGTON STUD FARM bought the mare Baylor’s Babe, in foal to Grand Slam, for $25,000.

Canadian stallion MOBIL was entered as the last hip number but was withdrawn.
