PATRICK HUSBANDS BREAKS PELVIS

In a freak accident, jockey Patrick Husbands suffered a broken pelvis and is out for the remainder of the Woodbine season.

One of this country’s all-time leading riders, Husbands was jogging Islay Inlet to the gate on Sunday when the filly took a bad step and got skittish. The filly ended up rearing up, falling and rolling onto Husbands.

“We were coming off a really nice day on Saturday and we were talking about the good horses we have coming up,” said agent Leroy Trotman. “We were just talking about how we were going to finish up the year really well.”

Husbands has 78 wins this season.

He is currently at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.

BREEDERS’ CUP WRAP

LUCKY SHAMROCK!

Canadians Manfred and Penny Conrad celebrate first Breeders’ Cup win

MANFRED and PENNY CONRAD bought their first Thoroughbred less than 10 years ago, a couple of broodmares on the advice of trainer Andrew Smith. In that short period of time, the Wellesley, ON couple, well known for their philanthropic work in the Waterloo region, have had horses in the Queen’s Plate and Kentucky Derby.

Saturday, they won their first Breeders’ Cup race with their first-ever starter.

The fittingly-named SHAMROCK ROSE came from 14th in the first Cup race on Saturday, the Filly and Mare Sprint, and snuck between horses to win a 4 horse photo for the Canadian couple.

Most incredible is that the filly was not originally nominated to the Breeders’ Cup and the Conrads had to put up $130,000 to run the filly. The $550,000 winner’s share took care of that.

It has been a remarkable run for Shamrock Rose, who was bought at last April’s 2yo sale in Ocala for $120,000.

The breeders are Tommy and Lori Fackler of Best A Luck Farm in Reddick, Florida. She is from the 4th crop of millionaire FIRST DUDE (Stephen Got Even) who had 3 very good runners in Breeders’ Cup races yesterday.

Shamrock Rose won first time out in her career in the Ontario Debutante Stakes last September and was 2nd in the Mazarine to Wonder Gadot and 6th in a turf allowance.

She raced in New York and Maryland in the spring and was just a fringe player and she was given 3 months off.

In 4 races since August, she has not lost – Presque Isle takes race 74 Beyer for Pennysylvania breds, Woodbine’s La Lorgnette over Miss Mo Mentum and then the Raven Run at Keeneland at 18 to 1. Two weeks back and she won the F & M Sprint.

In 10 races she has won 5 times, earned over $950,000 and had 8 different jockeys.

Race recap – Conrad Farms’ Shamrock Rose ($53.80) split horses in deep stretch and nailed Chalon in the shadow of the wire to win the 12th running of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) by a head to kick off the second day of the 35th Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs on Saturday afternoon.
Trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Shamrock Rose covered the seven furlongs in  1:23.13 (92 Beyer Figure) over a fast main track. It is the fifth Breeders’ Cup victory for Casse and Ortiz and the second consecutive win in the race for Ortiz, who rode Bar of Gold to her upset victory at Del Mar last year.
Now a winner of four consecutive starts, Shamrock Rose is a Pennsylvania-bred daughter of First Dude out of the Elusive Quality mare Slew’s Quality. It is her first Grade 1 victory.
Selcourt shot to the lead from her inside post and led the field of 14 through fractions of :21.89 and :44.99. Going into the far turn Happy Like a Fool took over for Selcourt with Chalon moving three wide to challenge and Ortiz beginning to pick off horses from the back of the pack on Shamrock Rose.
Chalon spurted to the front at the eighth pole and appeared home free until Shamrock Rock emerged from the onrushing pack to prevail at the wire. Anonymity was neck behind Chalon in third with favored Marley’s Freedom another head back in fourth.
Race Quotes:
Winning trainer Mark Casse (Shamrock Rose) – “Was I surprised we won? It was a tough race, but
she’s a good horse. I told (jockey) Irad (Ortiz Jr.) I don’t know if she’s good enough, but she’ll give you
everything she has. And, she’s good. It goes back to Allen Jerkins who always said ‘run them when
they’re good’ so we came back in two weeks.”
Winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. (Shamrock Rose) – “I let her be happy. She settled nice for me.
She was like fourth and when I dropped in and got through horses, she came running.”

RACE BY RACE BREEDERS’ CUP NOTES:

CLASSIC – ACCELERATE – The son of Lookin at Lucky was the first Breeders’ Cup winner for trainer John Sadler who was 0 for 40-something in the World Championships.

Woodbine jockey LUIS CONTRERAS and Ajax Downs’ occasional rider CERAPIO FIGUEROA both have exercised Accelerate for trainer Sadler.

The horse will race in the Pegasus World Cup in January before going to stud.

ACCELERATE is in the fight for the HORSE OF THE YEAR title with JUSTIFY, the Triple Crown winner.

Disappointing that European superstar ROARING LION, tossed in the Classic as an afterthought, backed up badly to be last beaten 60 lengths.

TURF – ENABLE, one of the greatest racehorses of all time no doubt. Two consecutive Arcs and now the BC Turf. This side of the world may not know her well but her Turf win was brilliant. May race in 2019.

Canadian bred CHANNEL MAKER, a Grade 1 winner this year, was not a factor but has enjoyed a super season. He was bred by Ivan Dalos.

SPRINT – Roy H won the Sprint last year, powered to another win this year. 9 for 22 in his career, gelding by More Than Ready based in California with trainer Peter Miller. Oh and Miller’s STORMY LIBERAL won the Turf Sprint, a race he also won last year. Miraculous accomplishment to keep these speedsters  in form and ready to peak on the  biggest day of racing 2 years in succession.

DISTAFF – MONOMOY GIRL is expected to race next year as a 4-year-old. She only lost once this year – but she actually won and was disqualified.

WONDER GADOT ended a great year with a fizzle. She won the Plate and Prince of Wales after a good 2nd in the Kentucky Oaks but was well beaten in the Travers, Cotillion and then 9th beaten 10 lengths in the Distaff.

It is likely the probable Horse of the Year in Canada, bred by David Anderson’s Anderson Farms, will be rested this winter.

DIRT MILE – Winner CITY OF LIGHT may race once more.

Woodbine rider LUIS CONTRERAS finished 3rd on Bravazo for trainer D Wayne Lukas.

MR HAVERCAMP pranced and danced his way to the gate for Saturday’s Grade 3 Autumn Stakes and roared to victory for Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry.

“I love this!,” said Fitzhenry. “I don’t want it to end.”

The couple have had a lot of success in the last 2 racing seasons with Mr. H, a homebred, DIXIE MOON, this years Oaks winner and homebred plus a litany of other good ones.

Mr. Havercamp ran 2nd in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile in a super effort and had been rested since that race in part because of a minor issue. He returned good as new for trainer Catherine Day Phillips.

The big son of Court Vision – Tennessee Lamb is expected to head south soon with the Day Phillips stable but where exactly is not known.

Mr Havercamp is in the running for Champion Older Horse and Turf Male for 2018.

“It was a little unexpected,” said Andre. “We were expecting big things but maybe next year.”

The A & A family sold yearlings at the recent September yearling sale and have a Bayern weanling selling at the November sale that begins today.

The farm has raced a small stable of horses since 2012.

Meanwhile, Kevin Attard is at Keeenland Monday for the November sale as his STARSHIP JUBILEE is entered to sell as a racing or broodmare prospect. The mare, owned with Soli Mehta, was a $16,000 claiming by the men, she has won over $400,000 and was champion turf female last year.
