JEWEL SPARKLES AGAIN

but Beyer Figures say it was a subpar run?

Racing well off the rail for most of the 1 1/16 miles and going quite fast all the way, CARELESS JEWEL, the Kentucky-bred, Canadian owned, trainer ridden 3yo filly, still romped in the COTILLION STAKES yesterday at Philly Park.

Perhaps the fast pace and the wide journey led to the soft Beyer Figure – she dropped from a 106 to just  98 FOR YESTERDAY’S SCORE.

It was a $750,000 purse and the almost-white filly’s last race before a projected start in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic.

Trainer Josie Carroll told reporters after the race:

“I spoke to Rob [Landry] before

the race and we thought maybe we wanted to drift

off the rail a little bit and make the others come inside if

they wanted to challenge us,” Carroll told Daily Racing

Form. “She probably wound up being out a little further

out than we’d planned, and the pace was a little quick,

but it looked like she was going comfortably the whole

way.”

OCT4BIRD1.jpgThe team from www.horse-races.net braved the elements at Belmont and shot the Super Saturday of racing. SUMMER BIRD did it again, he became the first colt to win the Belmont, Travers and JCGC in one year since the mighty EASY GOER.

And earlier, the best of the best was beaten – GIO PONTI could not stay with old timer INTERPATATION in the Joe Hirsch – the winner is by Canadian champion LANGFUHR and it was his first win in several years.

CHAMPION PALLADIO looking to bounce back

Today’s feature at Woodbine is the Grade 3 Durham Cup which figures to be held over a fast Polytrack that has played fair this week.

Yesterday the first 3 winners rallied late to win but te rest of the winners were on the lead or worhtin 2-3 lengths of the front.

Speedy TIZ LATE and MARLANG are the pace in the Durham while red-hot invader GRAN ESTRENO, a recent $20,000 claim, tries to keep the roll going.

IN his last winm the Washington Park Handicap, GRAN ESTREMO got away with ludicrous pace fractions and held on while PALLADIO was too far off the pace to catch up.

Look for ALEZZANDRO to pop up with a good outing too.

Sea The Stars chasing glory in one of Europe’s most prestigious horse races

By Trung Latieule (CP) – 1 day ago

PARIS — Sea The Stars is looking to join the all-time greats of horse racing by winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday.

The three-year-old colt was handed stall No. 6 in Friday’s draw. Two of the last four winners, Dylan Thomas in 2007 and Hurricane Run in 2005, also broke from that stall in one of Europe’s richest and most prestigious races.

Undefeated in five races this year, Sea The Stars is such a heavy favourite that punters can even bet on the margin of his victory.

“He’s unique,” Irish trainer John Oxx said of Sea The Stars in the Arc’s official magazine. “He’s not just the best horse I’ve ever trained, he’s the horse of a lifetime. He’s so versatile. He’s got all the speed in the world and he can do all the distances. There’s no pace that seems fast enough to trouble him.”

Yet, superiority on paper is no guarantee of victory on the mile-and-a-half Longchamp racecourse. Deep Impact and Authorized were the odds-on favourites in 2006 and 2007 but they lost to Rail Link and Dylan Thomas respectively.

Sea The Stars, son of 1993 Arc winner Urban Sea, has lost only once in his career. That was in his first race last year in Ireland.

Meteo France forecast cloudy conditions for Sunday though the 18 runners completing the field will be hoping for rain to derail the ambitions of the favourite.

Sea The Stars was scratched from the Irish Derby this year because of the ground conditions, which were too soft for him.

Michael Stoute, meanwhile, has won every major race in England but is still winless in 23 attempts at the Arc.

The Barbados trainer’s hopes will rest this year on Conduit, a four-year-old colt who will race from stall 12 and who won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Andre Fabre of France is the most successful trainer in Arc history with seven victories but had the worst draw as Cavalryman was handed stall 19, furthest away from the inside rail.

Cavalryman won the Grand Prix de Paris in July and Prix Niel last month.

Alain de Royer-Dupre, who trained 2008 Arc winner Zarkava, did not have much luck either with the draw as Beheshtam, a runner-up at Prix Niel, will race from stall 15.

Beheshtam is the son of Peintre Celebre, who clocked the Arc record with a time of two minutes 24.6 seconds in 1997.

Another potential contender is three-year-old filly Stacelita, who won the Prix de Diane and Prix Vermeille.

Stacelita will break from stall No. 16.

The field also includes Youmzain, a two-time runner-up at the Arc, and Vision d’Etat, who won the Prince of Wales’ Stakes.

Total prize money for the Arc is C4 million ($5.84 million) with C2,285,600 for the winner.

WOODBINE SATURDAY

OISTINS does it again

She’s little but blocky, speedy and gritty – OISTINS won the 2nd consecutive stakes race ofher ber little career yesterday at Woodbine in the Victorian Queen Stakes for Ontario foaled 2yos.

A daughter of Gardiner Farms stallion PEAKS AND VALLEYS, a champion who raced for Jim Day and Josephine Abercrombie here years ago, OISTINS led all the way to win for JAMES REDEKOP, who is from Vancouver and was making his first trip to WOODBINE yesterday.

Trained by Terry Jordan, whose horses continue to amaze and win big, OISTINS was named and bred by GORD COLBOURNE (who loves Barbados, thus the name of the famous spot on the island).

Colbourne sold the filly this spring to Jordan.

The chestnut earned a career best Beyer of 63.

The AVOWAL STAKESm named for a champion 3yo filly from years agi, went to SASKAWEA for the 2nd straight year.

This time it was a surprise since the mare had been in dull form recently and her Polytrack races had been drab too.

When the race was moved off the grass it was hard to like the Stormy Atlantic homebred but she sizzled all the way and stopped the timer in 1:21 2/5 – a 94 BEYER FIGURE.

It surely was a better way to end the week for the BECLAWAT and STEVE ATTARD TEAM – their promising 2yo ASCOT MATT broke down very badly in an allowance race on Friday and was destroyed.

Cup still on agenda for Goldi

(UKPA) – 1 hour ago

Freddie Head reports Goldikova to be none the worse after being beaten into third in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Saturday.

The four-year-old was chasing a remarkable seventh Group One victory and her fourth in succession but having raced prominently, she had to give way to Varenar and Sweet Hearth in the final furlong.

Head said: “She’s fine and seems very well. It was a bad race and maybe we went a bit fast as she never breathed and then stopped.”

He added: “It is the first time in her life she has run that way with no cover and I didn’t think she had the pace to do that.

“For the moment we are still going to go to the Breeders’ Cup but we will see how she comes out of the race. It was just one of those days.”
