FLATTERING DEBUT

Ami’s Flatter posts 89 Beyer Figure in stakes/dirt debut

Ontario bred AMI’S FLATTER (Flatter – Galloping Ami by Victory Gallop) had a super 3yo debut and 2nd career start when second in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream on Saturday. Owned and bred by Ivan Dalos and trained by Josie Caroll, the bay colt had a dream trip under Luis Contreras and was chasing the tough front runner Bluegrass Singer to the wire.
The time of 1:35.83 for the one-turn distance was good for a 92 Beyer Figure for the winner, a 89 for Ami’s Flatter.

Blood Horse recap:

A fast pace under strong pressure failed to deter front-running Bluegrass Singer, who shook loose of his rivals in the lane and held sway to the wire in the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park Jan. 3 .

Ridden for the first time by Javier Castellano, the gelded son of Bluegrass Cat   registered his first stakes win in the listed event for trainer Marcus Vitali and owner Crossed Sabres Farm.

REGIS RACING WINS FIRST GRADED STAKES RACE
Seduire c0-bred by Anderson Farms

A rousing winner of the Golden Gate Debutante Stakes last time out, NAT REA’S REGIS RACING’S  Seduire was sent from the rail and took her first graded stakes on Saturday, winning the Grade II, $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes by 2 ¼ lengths under Rafael Bejarano. Off at 4-1 in a field of nine 3-year-old fillies, Seduire negotiated 6 ½ furlongs in 1:15.37 while besting longshot Callback, who was ridden by Martin Garcia.

She posted a 94 Beyer Speed Figure.

“Seduire broke sharp from the gate,” said Bejarano. “I was hoping she would break sharp because she likes to be on the lead and I had a bad post. She broke well so I took advantage.  I got her relaxed and tried to give her a breather. When I felt pressured going into the stretch, I let her go and she showed me a big kick.”

An Ontario, Canadian-bred filly by Elusive Quality and out of the Holy Bull mare Holy Éclair, Seduire picked up her fourth win from seven career starts and paid $10.60, $6.00 and $4.20. Owned by Regis Racing, she bagged $120,000 for the win, hiking her earnings to $262,200.

“Coming from the rail, you don’t really have a lot of choices if you have a speed horse,” said Hollendorfer. “She got lucky and got away smoothly. I think the fractions were pretty decent (21.76, 44.25 and 1:08.73). We might stretch her out around two turns. I take them one at a time.”

NEVER STOP LOOKING UPSETS IN THE FIRE PLUG at LAUREL
93 Beyer Figure for Gus Schickedanz-bred
Somraj Singh’s Never Stop Looking hadn’t won a race since last January but past performances were of little matter over the wet going in this race as he steered wide into the stretch and ran down his foes to win the $100,000 Fire Plug Stakes, the second of four $100,000 stakes races Saturday afternoon at Laurel Park.

Roimes Chirinos held the reins on the son of Langfuhr for trainer Claudio Gonzalez. Their stretch running heroics got them home a neck in front of Smash and Grab, with fast closer Cutty Shark another neck back in third. Bakken, the overwhelming 2-5 favorite sped to the lead but steadily faded to sixth.

“I told Claudio I wanted to ride this horse back because he tried hard and was real close to winning,” Chirinos said. “I knew this race was going to be tough with lots of speed but I have a lot of confidence in my horse. He picked it up nicely off the turn and ran hard to the finish.”

The win was the second on the card for Gonzalez, who won the recently completed Laurel Park fall training title.

“I told the jockey to wait and make one big run,” Gonzalez said. “This horse really needed his last race. I knew he’d like the wet track and today was his day. Coming into the race we were very worried about the three horse (Bakken) because he had run in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.”

The winner paid $51 and topped a $288.20 exacta and $622.50 trifecta.

CANADIANS ELSEWHERE:
CHIN AND VELLA AND THE ‘BOSS’

TRINI BOSS has always shown a liking for grass in his racing career but he has not had many chances on the surface and his form has been somewhat erratic both at Woodbine and in parts south of the border. The gelding put it all together at Gulfstream on Saturday, however, as he stalked and took an early lead in a $35,000 claiming race at 1 mile on the turf and won that non-winners of 2 by 3 1/2 lengths for Derk Chin and trainer Danny Vella.
The winner is by Street Boss and is a Kentucky bred.

SEASON TICKET, a 3-year-old filly making her debut for Woodford Racing, won race 8 at Gulfstream on Sunday with a super rally from more than 7 lengths back. The Lemon Drop Kid filly is out of Game (Fr) by Montjeu and she was bred by Sean Fitzhenry in Ontario. Fitzhenry purchased the mare Game for $27,000.
The filly won the 1 mile grass race in 1:37.87, translated into a 67 Beyer Figure.

SEAN FITZHENRY is also the breeder of MILWAUKEE MIST, a debut winner at Turfway Park on Sunday. This is a Milwikee Brew 3yo out of Moonlit Mistress by Deputy Minister. He was 29 to 1 in the 1 mile race and he won in 1:40.22, a 63 Beyer Figure. Milwaukee Mist was a $12,000 weanling at the Keeneland November sale 3 years ago. He is owned by Preston Stables LLC.

THE QUEEN’S REIGN, a hard knocking grey mare from Woodbine, was a big winner for $4,00 claiming at Penn National on Saturday for owner and trainer Scott Fairlie. The Political Force mare is a Kentucky bred.

BILL THARRENOS claimed SPECTACULAR ME from a win at Gulfstream on Sunday. Tharrenos, who has a string of horses at the Florida track, took the grey mare for himself and A. Alber. The daughter of Catienus won the 5 furlong turf sprint in 56.59.

BUFFALO NEWS – GENE KERSCHNER’S TOP 5 MOMENTS- 2014

As we head into 2015 and a new year of racing and hopes of the emergence of current and future stars in our sport, I have to take a moment and look back at 2014 and the five moments that stuck with me. They’re not necessarily the biggest moments of the year, but they were the moments that either made me take pause or made my heart beat faster. Thoroughbred racing is an incredible sport with magical moments; these were mine in 2014.

1) Chrome outclassing the Preakness field and setting up a Triple Crown try. There’s no such thing
