Champion Tribal Belle is back!

Ever since the year Woodbine opened, the WHIMSICAL STAKES has been run. Okay, it was run at Greenwood once and it has been contested over 5 different distances but the race is a fun one each season and this year, champon female sprinter of 2009 TRIBAL BELLE is back to start up her season in the 6 furlong dash.
Her trainer Terry Jordan is currently suspended but that has not slowed the Jordan trainees (being looked after by Danny O’Callagan) – they are running out of their skin.
TRIBAL BELLE’S BARNMATE is Dancing Allstar who is also in the race with Patrick Husbands up – she won the race last year – and the sneaky-good stretch runner PROUD HEIRESS looms a danger as one who has been racing this spring.
Tribal Belle is owned and was bred by Mark Wiltshire , a 52-year-old stockbroker from Vancouver, B.C.
The WHIMSICAL is named for Whimsical (foaled 1903 at Raceland Stud in Kentucky), an American thoroughbred filly racehorse. She was sired by the great stakes winner Orlando, out of the mare, Kismet, who was sired by United States Racing Hall of Fame stallion, Hindoo.
Whimsical is best known as the second filly to ever win the Preakness Stakes. After placing second in the
Champagne Stakes as a two year old, she won the Preakness in a time of 1:45 by 4 lengths over Content and
Larabie.

WOODBINE, HEY BABY IT’S COLD OUT HERE
Artic Fern sizzles on very fast Polytrack
Saturday, a grey, blustery, downright cold April day, started off with a big-time upset when 3 to 5 shot MY CAT TALE, from the Steve Asmussen barn, floundered on the rail through the stretch and never hit the board in the maiden event.
Considered one the best bets of the day (well, maybe not at 3 to 5), the Tale of the Cat filly was making her
Polytrack debut after a good run at Oaklawn Park.
The winner was ONE SPARK, who ran so well in her season debut for C. scott Abbott and trainer Mike Doyle.
Dropping from a maiden allowance, the Florida bred by Macho Uno led all the way while removed from the rail and held off a Wando filly, Rusted Through.
Race 2- You know the BEAR is in town when his horses go off at even-money or less. The light grey colt BEARS FINISH LINE, owned by Danny Dion`s Bear stables, was pounded at the windows despite a less than auspicious debut outing when he was 5th beaten 13 at Gulfstream, and he led all the way under Eurico Rosa da Silva.
Trained by Mike DePaulo, the Tapit colt was a $190,000 2yo purchase last year in Florida.
In that race, firster KINGS COMMAND, from MARK CASSE`S barn, looked more like a rodeo horse in the gate, tossed Corey Fraser when the latch sprung and after a few strides, left that jockey in the Poly and ran away.
Fraser did get on his feet soon after.
race 3- Old timer ARCHERS ALYANCER, who left the barn of his longtime trainer John Simms last fall, won his
8-year-old debut for trainer Paul Attard. The Ontario bred, foaled by Ted Smith, is a son of the late Archers
Bay and is owned by D m and D payer.
The geldiing is 8 for 40 in his career and the win for $16,000 claiming yesterday got him very close to
$500,000 in earnings.
Emma Jayne Wilson rode the winner.
Race 4 – The first leg of the Pick 4 was the first win for the Audre Cappuccitti barn this season as DANCIN
ANNIE came from just off the pace to win her maiden at the allowance level in her 12th start and 5-year-old
debut.
Breaking from the rail, the mare let favoured Curve of Spee mix it up in pace duels before rallying. She is a
Brite Adam gal bred by Dalavin Farm in Ontario.
race 5- The day was filled with intriguing maiden races and this event went to AIR STRIKE, an Ontario bred by
Smart Strike who hinted last year in California but then had a long layoff before returning in the fall.
Confirming that he is a better sprinter, Air Strike led all the way in his season opener under replacement
rider EMILE RAMSAMMY, as Corey Fraser booked off.
Air Strike was bred by Liebau Farms and is owned by Woodford Racing LLC.
Race 6- this is was the hottest maiden dash of the day – a 3yo race at 6 1-2 furlongs – featured the debut of
the Storm Cat – Dancethruthedawn colt DARK CLOUD DANCER. The colt broke well from his rail post and dueled all the way with the rangy Gus Schickedanz homebred ARTIC FERN (Langfuhr) and he relinquished the lead late as the latter strolled away. Both 3yos finished on their wrong galloping leads but the time of 1:15.53 was good for a 90 Beyer Figure.
The winner was 2nd in his debut last year and he was coming in from South Carolina for trainer Mike Keogh.
RACE 7 – The first pick 4 wound up with Ramsammy winning again on the speedy BREWTIFUL GIRL, who was a troubled 2nd in her season debut but held off Not Just a Rumor on saturday to win for $60,000 claiming. she is owned by Hugh Blackmore and trainer by Alan Desrousseaux.
Race 8 – More speed does well as the wind continues to howl – DÒRO DIABLO strolled to a win for non-winners of 1 other than maiden or claiming and he proved he loves distances shorter than 6 furlongs. Owned and bred by Robert Harvey, the half brother to graded stakes winner Bickersons was winning for the 2nd time in his 11th start.
race 9 SPORTS SELECT continued the roll for the TERRY JORDAN team, even if it sits on the sidelines. With
Jordan suspended until May 2, Danny O`Callaghan is deputizing and really, he probably does not have to do much since these runners are just zooming around. SPORTS SELECT, by Petionveille, was a bit swarmed off the turn but then found another gear to win big in 1:02 3/5, an 89 Beyer Figure. James Redekop owns the speedball.
FRIDAY at Woodbine, GREENBACKHASVALUE won for Stanley Baresich and Berle Mowat in a $71,000 allowance dash. The fast filly was making her 2nd start of the season.
NICK DETORO won his first race of the year and congratulations to trainer KELLY CALLAGHAN, who saddled her first winner, PHINEAS, who she trains for DAVID CALLAGHAN.

Ontario bred stuns
Also at Keeneland yesterday, Ontario bred EMBUR’S SONG made her debut a winning one – crushing a field by more than 13 lengths in a (about) 7 furlong dash.
The filly led all the way and went fast, stopping the clock in 1:25 4/5 good for a 99 BEYER SPEED FIGURE.
Bred by Josham Farms and sold for $170,000 to Fares Farm, the daughter of Unbridled’s Song–Embur Sunshine, by Bold Ruckus, is a 1/2 to Ten Flat (Meadowlake), SW & GSP, $147,070; and Embattle (Phone Trick), MSP, $339,083.

LEPAROUX on CARELESS JEWEL again
American jockey Julien Leparaoux is seemingly the rider of choice for the Candian owned filly CARELESS JEWEL as she gets set for a showdown with RACHEL ALEXANDRA on April 30 at Churchill Downs in the La Troienne Stakes.
The almost-white gal is as fast as they get and she showed it again yesterday when she worked at Churchill in a wild 57.80.
Fractions for the work, the fastest of 30 at the distance, were :11.40, :22.20, :33.80 and :45.40 with a
six-furlong gallop out time of 1:11 and 1:25.80 for seven furlongs.
Winner of five straight races last year highlighted by daylight victories in the Delaware Oaks (G2) and Alabama (G1), Careless Jewel has not run since finishing last in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) in November at Santa Anita.
Careless Jewel is owned by Vern and Donna Dubinsky’s Donver Stables and trained by Josie Carroll.
DEPUTIFORMER BACK IN STAKES GROOVE
Former Canadian-based Ontario bred DEPUTIFORMER, a stakes winner at 2 in his home country, won his first stakes since then when he took the JOHN HENRY at Evangeline Downs yesterday. The 5yo by Silver Deputy – Barney’s Mistress, bred by Windfields Farm, won the 1 1 1/16 mile grass race in 1:40 1/5 for his owners, Hardy Farm. He is 5 for 30 in his career and has earned $468,733.
ROLL CONTINUES FOR COMEDERO
Canadian-owned COMEDERO won his 3rd straight stake when he took the Blue and Gold at Charles Town yesterday.
Peter Redekop’s fast Posse 3yo has won 6 of 7 career races. Yesterday’s score was at 7 furlongs which he ran in 1:23 2/5. He is an Arkansas bred.
