A friend of racing was lost to us two nights ago.
Michael Van Every loved horse racing, was an owner and a breeder and a champion of the health of the industry.
His big horse was CHARLIE’S DEWAN, winner of the Breeders’ Stakes (video), a gelding he owned with his partner SUSAN JANE ANSTEY.
Michael was a longtime member of the CTHS (Ontario) and he is the breeder of the current 2yo BACK BEAT from the family of Joyful Victory (Gr2).
Godspeed Michael.

BEAR IS BULLISH AT OBS
He’s baaaaack. The Bear, Danny Dion, was replenishing his 2yo stable yesterday at the April Ocala sale, the same place where trainer Reade Baker bought FATAL BULLET for him.
He bought 7 yesterday for over $850,000 and his trainers included Linda Rice of New York. The most expensive Bear-buy was a $310,000 Henny Hughes colt who was originally a $55,000 yearling purchase.

SHE’S SOLID
Woodbine based filly SOLID APPEAL blew em away at Keeneland yesterday, posting a 79 Beyer in an allowance win. The filly was the first winner for trainer Reade Baker in 2013. Chart courtesy of Thoroughbred Daily News:

SOLID APPEAL (f, 4, Successful Appeal–Star of the Woods, by Woodman), sixth in the grassy GIII Ontario
Colleen S. at Woodbine last August, appreciated the class respite and bounced back to score in an 8 1/2-
furlong allowance there Oct. 8. Given little consideration at 53-1 for her latest, she was fourth–beaten 3 3/4 lengths–in the GII Mrs Revere S. at Churchill Downs Nov. 17. Settled near the back early, the 4-1 chance rallied approaching the quarter pole,
swung out for the stretch drive, took over midstretch and was 2 1/2 lengths clear of Run a Risk (Distorted
Humor) at the wire. The victory gave jockey Joel Rosario his fourth win of the afternoon. The winner is a

THE HIT MAN IS BACK – JACQUES CARTIER STAKES
Ontario racing lost a popular trainer, and a successful one at that, when AUDRE CAPPUCCITTI passed away last fall. The stable remains ready to roll, however, for her estate and widower Gord Cappuccitti. It has a new look too. Some new staff and a new trainer will be behind the return of champion ESSENCE HIT MAN, a multiple champion sprinter who won this race the last 2 seasons and he has won his season debut in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
He tailed off last season and maybe age could be catching up, especially when he has to meet the formidable pair of BEAR NO JOKE and BEAR TOUGH TIGER,. The latter pair ended 2012 with a 2-1 finish in the Grade 3 Kennedy Road Stakes.
The listed trainer for the HIT MAN is Sylvain Pion, who, according to DRF stats in the last 5 years has raced 13 horses, 67 starts, 6 wins.
The field is a strong one even if it is only 7 horses with HAMMERS TERROR (worked like the wind), SAY NO MORE (Aiken winner last month), UPGRADE, Grade 3 stakes winner in New York and ARTIC FERN (stakes winner) lining up for the 60th running of this race.
UPDATE ON STUCK IN TRAFFIC, APRIL 18TH
The stakes winner was last in his most recent race for $7,000 claiming at Charles Town, beaten 24 1/2 lengths:
