FORT ERIE SEASON BEGINS MAY 26! Press conference tomorrow
track opens for training April 26

NIAGARA FALLS REVIEW – FORT ERIE – Fort Erie Race Track is now on the list.
Premier Kathleen Wynne, who is serving as her own minister of agriculture and food, announced the new Ontario government has reached tentative transition funding agreements with three race tracks – Georgian Downs, Flamboro Downs and Fort Erie Race Track – the latest step in ensuring race dates for the 2013 season.
They join six other race tracks that have also reached agreements-in-principle for transition funding. Western Fair, Clinton, Hanover and Elora also signed agreements in principle with the province earlier this month, while Woodbine and Mohawk race tracks signed on Jan. 23, 2013.
The provincial government says it will continue to negotiate agreements with other interested race tracks to provide transition funding for the next three years in order to ensure a strong future for horse racing in the province.
Wynne said Ontario’s horse racing and breeding industries are an important part of a healthy economy in Ontario.
“We will continue to work in consultation with the industry partners for the long-term good of the industry and the province,” she said.
Jim Thibert, chief executive officer of the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium, said more details will be released at a press conference at 11 a.m. Thursday at the track.
Thibert said he wished the announcement could have been made earlier, but it took some time to work out all the details with all the different parties that were involved.
“Everybody’s mission was to get it done before April 1,” said Thibert. “I would have liked to see it done a couple of months ago, but that just wasn’t possible. Everybody from the (transition) panel on down to staff worked long nights and early mornings and we were able to get this announced by the premier today

OLG WORKERS AT WOODBINE SLOTS SET TO STRIKE
mid-April….

by Michael Talbot
About 300 Woodbine slots employees have voted for strike action and could walk off the job in mid-April if ongoing negotiations with the OLG fail to bring them more job security, their union told CityNews.ca on Tuesday.

Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) vice-president Sharon DeSousa said talks are taking place Tuesday, and will continue on Wednesday before a conciliation meeting on Thursday.

DeSousa says the OLG’s modernization plan, which includes a looming GTA casino decision, has led to increased insecurity for Slots at Woodbine workers.
