Buena Vista relegated to second after Japan Cup win, Fifty Proof 18th

TOKYO — Belgian jockey Christophe Soumillion guided Japanese top gun Buena Vista to victory in the Japan Cup, but was denied the win after he was ruled to have impeded the runner-up.
With less than a furlong to go, the four-year-old filly snatched the lead to cross the line in two minutes 24.9 seconds, three and 3/4 lengths ahead of Rose Kingdom of Japan, ridden by Yutaka Take.
But race officials declared Rose Kingdom the winner, giving Buena Vista second place, after ruling that the filly disturbed Rose Kingdom’s course shortly before the finish.
Victoire Pisa of Japan, with French-based jockey Maxime Guyon in the saddle, came in third in a photo finish against Rose Kingdom in the 2,400-metre (1.5 mile).
Rose Kingdom was running at sixth place and Buena Vista 12th when the elite 18 thoroughbred rounded the last corner before cranking up the gears on the home straight.
The best foreign racer was France’s Cirrus des Aigles, ridden to ninth by Franck Blondel, followed by Ireland’s Joshua Tree in 10th place and Dandino of Britain in 11th.
Mores Wells from France was 13th while Timos, also from France, was 15th. Voila Ici from Italy finished in 16th, Marinous from France was 17th and Fifty Proof from Canada came 18th.
Buena Vista almost fell on the first turn when she clipped heels and came from well back to be much the best but sadly, the stewards decided her fate becuase of what appeared to be simply a hefty brush past a horse whow as not going to win.

Although she bore in slightly on Rose Kingdom, the latter’s rider Yutaka Take made a meal of the issue before driving his mount up to snatch second by a nose on the line from Japanese Guineas winner Victoire Pisa, who returned at 27-1.
A stewards’ inquiry was called. After about 20 minutes, to an audible groan, the numbers on the tote board opposite the colossal Tokyo grandstand were reversed, revealing to a crowd of more than 106,000 that their darling Buena Vista had become the first ‘winner’ to be disqualified in the history of the race.

PENDER HARBOUR SAILS HOME IN KINGARVIE

Saturday’s $128,200 Kingarvie Stakes at Woodbine started out quite rough with a horse flipping in the gate and then Isabella Bay getting loose, but once underway, it ws an intriguing Ontario sired 2yo event that was won by a nice prospect.
The 1 1/16-mile event for 13 two-year-olds (Lonesome Cherokee was scratched at the gate) was the second consecutive score for recent maiden winner PENDER HARBOUR , a son of
first year sire Philanthropist.
Trained by Mike De Paulo, Pender Harbour, (a town in British Columbia http://www.penderharbour.org/)launched a strong move on the second turn, seized command in mid-stretch and bested Hippolytus by 2 ¼ lengths. Ojibway Signal rallied for third.
Pender Harbour, seventh after a quarter-mile in :24.56 and a half in :48.94, stopped the clock in 1:45.60. The chestnut gelding, who was making his third lifetime start, is owned by western Canada’s Denny Andrews and Robert
Giffin.
De Paulo was slightly concerned at the wide start Pender Harbour endured (some 5 wide on the first turn), but figured he’d still be able to put in an energetic late run. “You hate to give up ground, but he’s a strong horse,” noted De Paulo. “It’s a good thing he dragged Slade along and we got the cash. He’s been a good horse. No complaints at all.”
Pender Harbour came into the feature off a maiden-breaking score at seven furlongs over the Woodbine Polytrack on November 13, a 5 ¾-length romp. His career bow came on October 17, also at seven panels, where he
encountered traffic trouble, but rallied to finish fourth, just two lengths back of the winner.
It was the third Kingarvie crown for De Paulo, who won with Festive Knight in 1998 and Bad Hat in 2005. Pender Harbour paid $21.30, $9.90 and $6.80, combining with Hippolytus ($8, $4.90) for a $171.80 exactor. Ojibway Signal ($4.30) completed a
$1,003.90 triactor. A $1 superfecta (Euclid Avenue) returned $3,066.40.
Pender Harbour, bred by Gardiner Farms, which is no longer in existence by that name, is out Uproar, by Hail the Ruckus. The mare also produced stakes winning 2yo Silent Course. The gelding comes from a classic Gardiner family which included 3rd dam, stakes winning Miss Hyperion, a daughter of the E.P. Taylor bred mare MUSKOKA (see below).
BIG WEEKEND FOR THE CANADIAN MARE, MUSKOKA!
Canadian-bred mare MUSKOKA (Nearctic) was represented by a Grade 1 stakes winner and Canadian stakes winner Pender Harbour on Saturday.
NO SUCH WORD, winner of the Grade 1 GAZELLE yesterday and owned and bred by Brereton Jones (who owns likely Canadian Horse of the Year Biofuel), is out of Muskoka Ice, who is a daughter of Candian stakes winner MUSKOKA WEEKEND, bred by Conn Smythe and owned by Eaton Hall Farm.
Muskoka Weekend is out of Muskoka, as is Miss Hyperion, the 3rd dam of Pender Harbour.

CHARLES FIPKE’S KENTUCKY BRED JERSEY TOWN WINS CIGAR MILE
Canadian owner Charles Fipke has had a big year with his horses in Canada and elsewhere.
Saturday, his Kentucky bred by Speightstown, JERSEY TOWN, won the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct over another Speightstown runner, Haynesfield.
Fipke tried hard to sell Jersey Town, who is out of Grade 1 winner Jersey Girl, but the colt never matched a reserve.
The 4yo has won 5 of 12 races.
CTHS MIXED SALE
Sorokolit mare tops at $63,000
THE QUEEN’S STAMP, stakes placed half sister to 3 stakes winners and in foal to Sky Conqueror, was bought for $63,000 by Cantium Bloodstock yesterday at the CTHS Mixed sale at Woodbine. Richard Moylan, agent sold a number of mares owned by William Sorokolit at the auction.
The mare’s average and gross were up but there were a lot of horses that did not meet the upset price of $750, the number of buy-backs almost doubled.
