CALIFORNIA CHROME TO WORK AT 3 P.M. EST aT SANTA ANITA
Edited press release
Racing fans will be able to watch 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome in a public workout at Santa Anita Park this Saturday, Jan. 2, his first public on-track appearance since he finished second in the Dubai World Cup last March 28. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner will use the workout as his final tune-up for the $200,000 San Pasqual Stakes over the same track on Jan. 9.
The popular chestnut colt is scheduled to work six furlongs under regular rider Victor Espinoza before the first race, at approximately noon. First post time that day is 12:30 p.m.
California Chrome had been on a Saturday to Saturday work schedule but went seven furlongs Sunday at his Los Alamitos Race Course headquarters in 1:25.40. With rain forecast for this Sunday, trainer Art Sherman opted to move California Chrome’s final major drill for the San Pasqual to Saturday, and Santa Anita will accommodate the California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit who turns 5 on New Year’s Day with a pristine track free of other workers.

CANADIANS ELSEWHERE
The buzz horse this week at Gulfstream was none other than the locally trained and owned….
SOPHIA’S SONG, an impressive maiden winner at Woodbine on Nov. 14, marched into Gulfstream Park on Dec. 30 and won an allowance/optional claiming race by 6 1/2 lengths in 1:36.50 for 1 mile, good for a 74 Beyer Speed Figure according to DRF. The Kentucky bred is owned by Janice Attard and Abraham Hadeed, the latter who purchased the filly as a yearling for $30,000. Sid Attard trains the chestnut 2yo daughter of Bellamy Road – Dreamscape by Mt. Livermore. She paid just $5.80 and is an exciting prospect for the Attard family.
More winners by Canadians –
REJOICEFUL has been a productive mare for James Perron Racing Stables and the 5yo (now 6) won for $16,000 claiming on New Year’s Eve and was claimed by Joker Racing. The Ontario bred is by Corinthian out of Ethan’s Car by Cat Thief and she was bred by Josham farms.
Danny Vella trained the mare to the wire at 1 1/16 miles on the grass.
On New Year’s Day – BILLY THARRENOS celebrated a win with his own ENDGOGENY, who overcame a stumbling start to win a 1 mile dirt race for $62,50 claiming, non-winners of 3. The Don Ross-bred son of Where’s the Ring was 3-1 and won by 4 3/4 lengths. The dam is Hasta Pronto by El Prado (Ire).
On his birthday, owner/trainer RICKY GRIFFITH sent out ISTRUE to win the first race at Gulfstream on Dec. 30 as the 2-1 favourite. The Florida bred by Benny the Bull was coming off a unplaced run at Woodbine in November.
Other stuff
The interesting colt from Europe, KASSEOPIA, had a smart workout time at Palm Meadows on New Year’s eve of 48.65 as he prepares to race for Team Valour. The flashy chestnut was 2nd in the Grey Stakes at Woodbine to Riker in the fall.
