Trade Storm sticks to inside of turf course and charges to Woodbine Mile win
The 6-year-old horse TRADE STORM has been well traveled through his 34 races but this kind-hearted fellow tries his best every time. Trainer David Simcock spoke highly about the horse, his demeanor, his honesty, following the Woodbine Mile on Sunday in a press box gathering.
Simcock, from Newmarket, operates Trillium Place with his wife Jennie. He has trained for 10 years and Trade Storm is the first one he has picked up for Qatar Racing, a group formed by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani from the Royal Family of Qatar.
The horse is not eligiible to the Breeders’ Cup so a fee would have to be paid to get him into the race, Nov. at Santa Anita.
Trade Storm had a bit of bobbing and weaving to do but he stayed on the better part of the course and he held off KAIGUN, the Canadian-bred who seemed to have trouble with the grass as he raced spotty but closed well. GRAND ARCH was too wide and uncovered in his run and was 5th.
EYES ON BREEDERS’ CUP – Deceptive Vision
Sam-Son Farms’ has always been high on the A. P. Indy filly DECEPTIVE VISION but a suspensory injury put her on the sidelines early in her career. She is not in top form and won the Canadian under a hand ride. Jockey Eurico Da Silva was giddy after the race – thrilled to be back riding her for trainer Maolcolm Pierce.
The NORTHERN DANCER Stakes was very contentious and there was an inquiry for about 6 minutes into the last few strides.
SHEIKHZAYADROAD rallied up the rail to win but things got tight when he shied from something inside of him – the poles, the cameras. DYNAMIC SKY, running his usual good race, was right there on the outside and REPORTING STAR, who ran a heroic race on the lead all the way, had to take up right near the wire. There was no disqualification and that seemed to be the shared opinion of many onlookers.
MORE SUNDAY
REBELLION ON TAP won a thriller in race 1 where three rivals hit the line almost as one. This Heste Sport homebred by Rebellion has won 2 straight now for trainer BIll Tharrenos. Jesse Campbell won his first of 3 scores.
Maiden 2yo colts and the winner was ENGISN ELI, who led all the way for Paul Schaffer and trainer Marty Drexler. This is an Ontario bred by Midshipman out of Alkmaar by Monashee Mountain who was making his 3rd career start. He was an $18,000 yearling purchase as a weanling and he was bred by Bob Harvey and A. Wortzman.
Race 3- INTERNAL BOURBON got it done in this maiden allowance for Ontario sired 2yo fillies for Charles Fipke and trainer Roger Attfield (see below)
Race 4- The pick 4 started off with an upset – SPANISH RIVER, first time Lasix, rolled to an easy win in this maiden allowance for Ruvee Stables and Frank Huarte. It was the first win for Huarte and the Giant Gizmo gelding was making his 8th start.
Race 5- another maiden allowance for Ontario sired horses, PLAYMETHEBLUES, a well bet first time starters, was a handy winner for Winview Racing and trainer Pat Parente. He is a Sky Conqueror gelding out of Squeezetoy bred by Richard Moylen. And he was a $1,900 weanling.
Race 7 – THEOGENY is 2 for 3 this year for the Conrad Farms and trainer Mark Casse. She won this allowance/optional claiming race in her 2nd try since a win at the first allowance class. The Conrads were busy at Keeneland earlier this week.
Race8 – JAGGER M got up in the last jump in a wild finish to score for the first time this year. He won the $40,000 claiming race under Jesse Campbell and the large crowd had a deafening cheer as he reeled in Why Tie the Knot.
Race 10 – Tough race for some who got into traffic trouble and hanging on to win was I SCREAM SUNDAY, a homebred for Frank DiGiulio Jr by Silent Name. Robert Tiller trains this 3yo filly.
ALERT BAY – 3rd straight BC DERBY FOR PETER REDEKOP
89 Beyer for City Zip 3-year-old
STORY BY JACK SHINAR – BLOOD HORSE
Favored Alert Bay took command in the drive and posted a comfortable two-length win in the $135,225 British Columbia Derby (Can-III) (VIDEO) at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver Sept. 14 as owner Peter Redekop won the race for a third straight year.
The California-bred Alert Bay ran the 1 1/8-mile test for 3-year-olds in 1:49.12 on a fast track.
It was the second straight win in Hastings’ signature race for trainer Anita Bolton and jockey Rico Walcott, who teamed in 2013 with Redekop’s Title Contender. Redekop also won the 2012 renewal with Second City, and previously won the race in 1994 with Squire Jones.
