LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL EXCERPT

After win, Serenading may continue to sing

By Jennie Rees • jrees@courier-journal.com • November 26, 2009

Plans after Thursday’s $160,950 Falls City Handicap called for the 4-year-old filly Serenading to join John and Glen Sikura’s broodmare band at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Lexington.

Instead, after a three-length victory over 14-1 Morena in the GradeII stakes at Churchill Downs, Serenading could face a much longer van ride — like to Florida to prepare for additional racing.

“She might have just unretired herself,” Lorie Allen, assistant trainer to Josie Carroll, said with a laugh. “This was supposed to be her last dance. But she ran so big, it looks like we’ll try to get a few more into her before we go to the breeding shed.”

Being based at Woodbine with its Polytrack surface, Serenading had raced only once on ..

RAHY’S ATTORNEY – CAN HE DO IT?

Canadians gunning for Sovereign Awards

It would take a win by Rahy’s Attorney in today’s Rover City to have a chance, albeit a small one, at upending CHAMPS ELYSEES for champion turf male and HORSE OF THE YEAR in Canada but who knows which way the Sovereign voters will go?

Some have exclaimed they won’t vote for Champs Elysees simply because his only win on the year was in the Grade 1 Canadian International.

Today’s race is a Grade 3 and Rahy is 5 to 2.

Top Canadian 3yo filly MILWAUKEE APPEAL could gain Horse of the Year votes if she wins the Grade 1 Gazelle – why not – she has danced so many dances this year and handled herself so well.

Perhaps that is the key to her busy sked this season – the interests knows Horse of the Year is up for grabs…

WOODBINE WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY

And then there were just 8 (days of racing left in 2009).

There are still some cool races and nice prospects out and about Woodbine these days as the temperature slowly starts to dip and the season comes to a close.

There are barns that have had strong years – the usual groups of Mark Casse, Sid Attard, Reade Bakerm, Scott Fairlie, Roger Attfield and Malcolm Pierce and and then there is Steve Attard, in the midst of a career year.

Others are heating up as the season winds down and winning frequently – those include Mike Doyle, who unleashed a nice firster on Thursday.

SULIS, a chestnut Marii’s Mon 2yo from the solid producing mare Medicine Woman rallied late in a very professional maiden score in race 1 on Thursday, an A level maiden allowance.

Owned by co-breeder Glencrest Farm and Eaton Fall Farm, Sulis is a half sister to 9 winners including stakes winner Hot Lear.

Race 2– The imposing DA POSSE was bet ‘off the board’ – in the range of 6 to 5, and won for the 3rd time in 9 races this season for Colebrook Farms and trainer Ashlee Brnjas. The 4yo Posse gelding was ridden by leading rider Patrick Husbands.

Race 3- Trainere JOHN DIMARCO won his 2nd race of the year with the 2yo filly STUNNING IN RED making here 4th career start after 6th, 5th and 10th place finishes. The Alajwaad filly, bred in Ontario by Hal Snowden Jr., is owned by J and K Stable and Oliva Terdik. The race was for $25,000 claiming.

Race 4- ALMOST….ALMOSTOUTOFTHEBLUE almost won for the 5th time this year but his nose win was taken away as he was disqualified fro the $12,500 claiming race for pushing out GRAY MESA in the final yards. The B.C. bred gelding had won 4 previous races but MESA got the win, his 2nd in succession for Sylon racing and Reade Baker. It was the 2nd win for jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva.

Race 5– Trainer LORNE RICHARDS told Daily Racing Form this week it has not been a good year for him but he has been on a roll lately. His 3yo trainee ALEXABELLA won her maiden for $10K in her 5th career race. She is a Kentucky bred by Congaree.

Race 6- Steady barns of the year include that of STEVE ASMUSSEN, who is rarely at Woodbine but his operation runs like clockwork. He won for the 50th time at the meeting with IDEALHOUSE in a maiden 2yo filly claiming race for $32,000. She is by Limehouse.

Race 7 – Hugh Harlington’s MARIA’S STORY is a 2yo filly by Maria’s Mon and she won for the 2nd time in here short career with a win for $25,000 claiming undeer apprentice Omar Moreno. Scott Fairlie trains.

Race 8 – Non-winners of 3 for $10,000 and the well bred PEGASUS REIGN (Fusaischi Pegasus) beat an A.P. Indy dude, Brickyard Crossing to win in his 2nd race since June. He is owned by Jason Horner and trained by Tino Attard.

Race 9 – Another low level event on the card went to old timer BALLEN ISLE, an entire horse and a 9-year-old. Owned and bred by Bill Sorokolit, this handy fellow is 8 for 61 in his career now and he is trained by Darwin Banach. It was his 3rd win this year and he won for $7,500 claiming.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT

SEXY SHERI kicked off the night with her 4th win of the season – for $12,500. The 3yo filly by WHERE’S THE RING is trained by Ralph Biamonte.

CELEBRIAN is yet another super claim for trainer JOHN CARDELLA who got this gal for John Fortino and partner. This 2yo by Dance Master won for the 3rd time in her last 4 starts in race 2 for $32,000.

PRIMPING got gussied up and won her maiden in race 3 for $20K claiming for Mark Casse’s Quintessential Racing. She is an Ohio bred bby Chapel Royal.

The stallion WHERE’S THE RING had a big night as his 2yo’s finished 1-2 in the maiden allowance 4th race. WHERE’S THE FIRE, drawing in from the also eligible list was hard ridden throughout 5 furlongs and held on to win over WHERE’S RINGO. The winner is owned and breed by Gail Lunan and trained by co-breeder Zelko Krcmar.

BEENTHRUTHEDESERT dropped from allowances to $10K claiming and won the 5th race in his 4th race since May 2008 for Ted Coker and Jim Coburn and trainer Red Johnson.

AWAKENED is one of the most game fellows you will see at the track. This bay fellow by Tethra had no reason to hang on in the allowance featured 6th race for Ontario sired guys but he fended off 2 rivals through the stretch and won for the 2nd time in succession in his 4th race of this year. He was the 2nd winner for Casse’s Quintessential Racing. He was breed by Spirit Wind Farm.

THUMBIN A RIDE is on a roll with 2 straight wins for Centennial farms Niagara and trainer Don MacRae.

And a day before the BILL SOROKOLIT/DARWIN BANACH team won with Ballen Isle, they hit with ENGLISH ALPHABET in the finale, a maiden race for $10,000. The winner is a 3yo by Alphabet Soup.

JAPAN CUP NOV 29

CONDUIT – BEST HORSE EVER TO RACE IN CUP?

preview of American invaders from Japan Racing

Has there ever been a horse of Conduit’s class in the Japan Cup? The 4-year-old trained by Sir Michael Stoute and sired by 2003 European horse of the year Dalakhani has won the last two Breeders’ Cup Turf races, this year’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and last year’s St. Leger Stakes. So there’s a good reason why Big Red Farm shelled out a hefty fee for Conduit to stand in Japan starting next year. The Japan Cup will be the final start of the colt’s career and should Conduit win, he will be eligible for the Japan Autumn International bonus of 130 million yen. Bred by Ballymacoll Stud, the turning point of Conduit’s career came on Sept. 13, 2008, when he won the St. Leger – Stoute’s first victory in the race in 24 tries. The Classic triumph was followed a month later by Conduit’s first win in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, a win that landed him the Eclipse Award as American Champion Male Turf Horse of the year. In 2009, he won the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes on July 25 as the first choice before finishing fourth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and defending his title in the Nov. 7 Breeders’ Cup Turf as the overwhelming favorite.

STAR-STUDDED WEEKEND ON TAP IN THE U.S.

FROM DAILY BREEZE.COM

Horse Racing Column: Star-studded weekend at the track

By Art Wilson, Staff Writer

There’s no night racing today at Hollywood Park, but the stars will be out all weekend during the track’s annual Turf Festival, which includes five graded grass races for purses totaling $1.1 million.

Of course, the biggest star that will appear is the super mare Zenyatta, who will gallop in front of the grandstand following Sunday’s seventh race as fans not only get DVDs and posters commemorating her brilliant career, but also the opportunity to say a final goodbye to the racing starlet who finished unbeaten in 14 races.

Overall, eight horses that competed in Breeders’ Cup XXVI at Santa Anita earlier this month will be in action this weekend, including Ventura, who will be making the final start of a great career in Saturday’s $300,000 Grade I Matriarch for older fillies and mares.

Ventura, winner of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and runner-up to Informed Decision this year, is one of three horses that former Bobby Frankel assistant Humberto Ascanio will saddle today and Saturday after temporarily taking over Frankel’s stable following the Hall of Famer’s death Nov. 16 because of complications from lymphoma.

It was one of Frankel’s wishes that Ventura end her career with a start in the Matriarch, and Juddmonte Farms, which owns the 5-year-old daughter of Chester House, will honor that request.

“I want her to win it for Bobby,” Ascanio said. “He made this filly.”
