QUEENSTON STAKES is a longshot festival
BLACK HORNET rebounded from a drab run in the Woodstock Stakes to lead all the way and win the Queenston Stakes for Winview Racing Stable and trainer Pat Parente. The 3yo gelding by Pioneering was bred by Roger Fortier’s Jus Luk Stable, which sold the gelding for $4,500 Through Willow Ridge Farm to Pat Parente.
(Parente also bought the Friday winner ROSIE JANA for $1,500)
Black Hornet had been 3rd to Vyjack in a stakes race in december at Aqueduct but was never happy in the Woodstock as he battled and faed.
In the Queenston, he set the pace with his ears pricked, fended off a challenge by Kitten Candy off the turn and held on to win in a sizzling 1:12 2/5 over a chagring JAGGER M (Harlan’s Holiday).
The Beyer was a smart 89, better than his 55 that he picked up in the Woodstock. Jagger me, a recent maiden winner, was a good 2nd while DYNAMIC SKY, who was expected to scratch was an even 3rd.
RIVER SEVEN, the graded stakes winning 2yo of last year appeared with front bandages on and he was one-paced and was a modest 4th.
The Queenston may not go very far as a Plate prep this year as the top three appear to be one turn horses, but the running time was super.
BLACK HORNET is from the winning mare START STINGING, a Stronach Stables product who is out of the useful mare Bees ‘n’ Honey. Start Stinging was producing foals for Reade Baker Racing and Queensvalley Farm before being taken over by Fortier.

Woodbine Oaks possibility CHECKERED PAST was a predictable winner of race 6 for maiden allowance gals, purse $67,100. The Sam-Son Farms 3yo by Smart Strike – Catch the Flag by A P Indy (2nd dam is Catch the Ring, who won the Oaks) easily handled 7 other gals at 1 1/16 miles
under Eurico da Silva. She was making her 3rd career start and the big turf to Polytrack move.
The bad news is, the Beyer Figure for the race is a 50.
SAM-SON, pegged by Canadian Thoroughbred magazine as a TOP 10 stable to key in on for 2013 won the 7th race also with another easy pick, CLASSY AL. The 4yo by Afleet Alex sizzled from off the hot pace to win the maiden allowance in 1:22 1/5, good for a 77 Beyer. The winner was making his 3rd career start.
Patrick Husbands bounced back from a scary gate incident in the previous race when his mount ENGLISH HOLIDAY acted up in the gate and had to be scratched.

SCOTT FAIRLIE and his ACE RACING has been busy. It claimed 2 horses on Friday and then won its first race of 2013 at Woodbine when ZINN HOUSE DOLL wore down speedy Ticket Time to win the $8,000 claiming race that opened Saturday’s card.
Emma-Jayne Wilson rode the winner who was making her first start of the season.
Fairlie won the last race on Saturday with RISING DOUGH, owned by Stablemates. The race was a scary one for CAPTAIN CROW and jockey Steve Bahen as the pair were wiped out by an errant SAN NICOLA THUNDER in the stretch run and almost fell. Bahen grabbed his face soon after an tried to pull his horse up as the rider appeared to be hurt. There was an inquiry but San Nicola Thunder was not disqualified despite drifting in through the stretch.
ROCK STAR MIA became the 2nd 2-time winner of the season with a bold speed run in race 2 for $12,500. The Ontario bred by Grand Slam was making his 3rd start of the meeting for owner/trainer Maro Maver and it was his 7th race of the year as he was in Florida all winter. Apprentice Tommy Wong ride the 3yo gelding to the win.
A mix of fillies and colts were in race 3, a $10,00 maiden claiming event and the winner was a gal: DANI’S REGAL LADY, an $8,000 claim by Tony Gaito at Tampa Bay Downs in January, won her 14th career race from off the pace under Luis Contreras. John Simms trains the 4yo by Northern Afleet.
And the 3rd 2-time winner of the meeting is DANIEL BE GOOD, who led all the way to win race 4 for $8,000 claiming. The 7yo by Trajectory just won for $6,250 on opening day and won right back under Jermaine Bridgmohan for partners Lewis, Gonzalez, Rizzo and Klicke.
A day of modest claiming races continued with the 5th for maiden fillies for $16,000. The winner was firster GENEVIEVE’S BREEZE, bred by Cavendich (Dick Bonnycastle) and a $5,000 yearling purchase by John Mckenzie. The sizy Mutakkdim gal was on the pace all the way and held off a very troubled CAVALIER’S DESTINY to win under Rick Dos Ramos.

FRIDAY WRAP
The NICK DETORO barn is off a good start and it won it’s 2nd race with its 7th starter in race 1 when FAYE’S GRAY rallied to win the $6,000 claiming opener, Todd Kabel has ridden both DeToro winners. Faye’s Gray was making his first start of the year and he did not win at all in 2012.
Tom O’keefe and Emma-Jayne Wilson combined to win race 2 for Tickled Pink when TSARVENA held off Dynamite Night to win race 2 for $10,000. The winner is by Put It Back and was making her first start of the year.
S A RACING’s RED SHOT, by Trajectory, held on to beat OLD BLUE EYES by a neck to win the $10,000 3rd race. The winner was claimed in September of 2012 for $5,000, was off until April 20 when he was 2nd for $6,250. He is 4 for 18 in his career. Ross Armata trains.
MALIBU SKYLINE won at 1 to 1 to strat the Pick 4 but it was only by a teeny nose. The 5yo by Malibu Moon is owned by Bruce Lunsford, who won 4 races with the gelding last season. The winner was claimed by Daryl Ezra and owners Hoffman and Chesney.
Trainer ROBERT TILLER and owner ROLPH DAVIS combined to win with the white faced 1ster MATO GROSSO in race 5. He is a 4yo by Dehere out of Just Humor Me and a half brother to the owner’s Forest Justice, who was a useful winner. Mato Grosso was debuting for $12,500 and had a wide post but he rallied outside to beat Stolicho.
CASH FOR LIFE won his maiden in his 2nd race of the year. The son of Philanthropist is a homebred for the Nosowenko family and he was bet hard to even money on the move to $23,500 maiden claiming.
MISS ECHO DURING became the first 2-time winner of the meeting with a very easy romp in race 7 under Eurico da Silva. The During mare is owned and trained by Darwin Banach who is 5 for 8 at the meeting.
ROSIE JANA led all the way for Winview Farm and Pat Parente to win a maiden allowance in race 8. The Cryptograph – Ria’s Charm, by Thunder Rumble filly was making her 2nd start of the season and 3rd career start. she was ridden by Emile Ramsammy who was getting his first win of the season.
The finale was the 3rd straight front running winner – WHISPERING WALL for Lisa McCallum Smith. The 5yo mare won for $10,000 in her 2nd strat of the season and she is trained by Greg Cox. Gerry Olguin rode.
ARK RACING/RACING CANADA DONATE RED EAGLE
LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement wants to announce the availability of RED EAGLE for adoption. This well mannered fellow won almost $300,000 on the track and raced last year at the age of 4. He is a wonderful prospect for any rider.
Abraham Katryan and Racing Canada retired the gelding, a son of Legal Jousting, and LongRun hopes to have a forever home for this wonderful gelding soon!
