IT’S TIME!
Impossible Time sizzles in Ballade, Embur’s Song Oaks-bound
The girls were on their game on Saturday at Woodbine. IMPOSSIBLE TIME won her first stakes race for owner/breeder Charles Fipke, who has had a big year already with Society’s Chairman, Lady Shakespeare and Not Bourbon.
Trained by Roger Attfield, IMPOSSIBLE TIME has had a lot of setbacks with injuries in her career: one race in 2008 (a win), 5 last year with a big layoff; and then 4 this season. A 5yo raw-boned, long, galloping type of gal, she had no problem shortneing up from 7 to 6 furlongs for the Ballade, an Ontario sired event.
She streaked past horses arond the turn and drew off from a very game DASH IT DREAMER from Harlequin Ranches.
BENT ATTORNEY, pounded down to even-money off an allowance win, seemed to bounce/not handle the 6 furlongs in a rather lfat effort on the rail. AUTHENICAT, a multiple stakes winner, made a premature move on the turn to get into range but then stalled and the 5ypo mare had won this race last year.
Speaking of IMPOSSIBLE TIME, the time of the race was 1:08.79, one of several impossible times on the fast Polytrack. Her Beyer Figure was a career best 90.
Impossible Tome is by the deceased NOT IMPOSSOBLE, a full brother to Perfect Soul, who has been a star in his short time at stud. The mare is Classiest Carat by Pleasant Colony. Jono Jones rode the bay mare to her 5th win in 10 races.
Meanwhile, the action was already hot at Woodbine on a day when a tiny bit of rain seemed to help make the track so very fast. In the 3rd race, the Ontario-bred EMBUR’S SONG came back to her home province and made a smashing impact on a field of allowance fillies. As the lone speed, the sizy daughter if Unbridled’s Song – Embur Sunshine by Bold Ruckus strolled to the lead, got a half mile in 48 and change, was swarmed into the turn and then pulled away to a big win.
She is owned by American-based Fares Farm, trained by Todd Pletcher and is now 2 for 2 in her career.
Bred by Ted Burnett’s Josham Farms, Embur’s Song raced 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.44, the fastest for a filly since Polytrack was installed, and she earned a 98 Beyer Figure.
She had won her maiden with a 99 Beyer Figure.
This gal is an Oaks nominee and a Queen’s Plate supplement ($5,000 on May 1). How she will handle more pressure on the pace will be interested to see but she is an exciting gal.

MORE WOODBINE SATURDAY…
Trainer JOHN MATTINE had a horse win a photo for his first score of the season. The newly gelded RED SPARTAN (Omega Code) won his 3yo debut in race 1, a maiden $32,000 claiming race, by a head under apprentice Omar Moreno. The bay beat co-favoured End of my Rope, a son of Unforgetable Max.
Mattine had had 3 runners finish close 2nd’s to start his season.
The OSPREY STABLE team of Sherry MacLean (Gardiner Farms manager), MOIRA GUNN and partners had a win in race 2 with homebred KISSHER TO KEEPHER, a Where’s the Ring filly out of Stretch our Wings by Graustark.
Kissher to Keepher was favoured in the 1 1/16 mile race and she was winning for the 2nd time in 18 races. It was a Daily Double for jockey Moreno. Scott Fairlie was the winning trainer.
R SHINING HOPE won his 3rd race in his 4th career start when he took to the turf like a duck to water in race 4. The son of Strong Hope – Miss Muriel by Canyon Creek came up the rail and won a very close photo over P L HENRY, a Dixie Union colt making his grass debut. Iris Bristow bred and owns R SHINING HOPE.
BETWEEN RAINDROPS, a well bred filly by A.P. Indy, won her maiden in race 5 for HIll ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings and Sam Barnes. The Josie Carroll trainee was making her 5th career start and was dropping from an A level maiden race to a B level event.
Race 6 went to KING’S COMMAND, won his maiden for Woodford Racing and Westrock Stable. Trained by Mark Casse the Empire Maker colt was 2nd in his latest after rearing at the start of his career debut. His stablemate SO ELITE is in action in race 8 today and that one beat King’s Command last time.
That was the first of 2 wins for Casse and jockey Corey Fraser, who combined to win on WOODBOURNE, owned by Eugene Melnyk, in race 10.
That $50,000 claiming event was the first race for Woodbourne since he was a rabbit and 8th in the Sky Classic Stakes last summer. He had a shoe fixed in the paddock before the race and sure looked good when he finally went to post. He was let go at a shocking 11 to 1.
And congrats to apprentice CORY SPATARO won the 7th race on the filly MOUNTAIN ECHO for owner/trainer Richard Davis. The big bay filly was coming right back for $20,000 claiming, non-winners of 2, and while she dritef in through the strtech and put the squueze on at least one rival, she prevailed and there was no inquiry. Spataro is a 10 pound apprentice.

Bay to Bay wins American Oaks for Toronto’s Rob Smithen
It was either the LA LORGENTTE STAKES today at Woodbine on the Polytrack or the $200,000 American 1000 Guineas on turf at Arlington yesterday.
Owner Rob Smithen and trainer Brian Lynch made the right decision.
Woodbine based Florida bred BAY TO BAY strolled home to win the ‘guineas’ by almost 3 lengths with a 93 Beyer Figure for one mile on the grass.
Run for the third time at a mile over the Arlington turf course, the $200,000 Guineas was timed in 1:39.24. Bay to Bay, a daughter of Sligo Bay , sat far off the pace set by Go Ask Alex. Go Ask Alex cruised through the early going, setting splits of :24.88 and :49.09 over the “good” turf course.
Bay to Bay took over into the stretch and won with her ears up.

She had won the Natalma Stakes (grade 3) last year at Woodbine.
Bay to Bay was bought for just $35,000 by Smithen at the Keeneland september yearling sale 2 years ago from Hidden Brook sales agency, which is an agency with close ties to Adena Springs South, which bred the filly.
BAY TO BAY is by the now-Ontario sired SLIGO BAY and out of the former Kinghaven Farms mare BALA, a daughter of With Approval. BALA, out of Muskoka Dawn, was stakes placed a few time and earned $235,000.
LA LORGNETTE HONOURED
Plate horses race at Woodbine
That big brute of a gal LA LORGNETTE, who passed away within the last 2 years at Ashford Stud, is remembered today with the race named in her honour. The event is a doozy as champion BIOFUEL goes against former stablemate Ernford, Curtis Jospeh’s MOMENT OF MAJESTY and the very good REDVERSE.
Jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva is on board even though he’s actually suspeneded right now. He got a stay for the stakes race.
The race is a big one for Oaks fillies like Ernfold and ‘Majesty,but Biofuel is American bred and not eligible.
Also today, Queen’s Plate hopfeuls MOBILIZER, ARTIC FERN,AND WHO WE GUNNA CALL race in an allowance event. The event is a tough one since CHIEF COUNSEL has shipped in for WinStar (won the Kentucky Derby with Super Saver) and trainer Bill Mott. He was 4th in the Lexington Stakes.

EYE OF THE LEOPARD READYING FOR KENTUCKY CAMPAIGN
Queen’s Plate winner EYE OF THE LEOPARD is in training at Churchill Downs with Neil Howard these days, getting ready for an American campaign on the dirt. The THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS caught up with news on the Sam-Son Farms colt – the champion 3yo of last year:
Eye of the Leopard is now based in the Churchill barn of trainer Neil Howard. He has two three-furlong drills
at Churchill this month, most recently covering the distance in :38 4/5 May 14.
Of the trainer change, Ocala farm manager Tom Zwiesler explained, “We want to try a dirt surface and to try to compete in the States. We want to find out if he can compete on a high level here. If not, we’ll take him back up and Mark will take him back. Right now, as far as a stallion value, we have to test the waters down here and we thought it was best to keep him on a dirt surface, since we plan on running him on a dirt track.

Quote from owner suggests more racing, training harder
Other than the fact that he reportedly had serious ankle surgery in the winter, MINE THAT BIRD has had a good go of things considering he came from nowhere to be a champion in Canada and a Kentucky Derby in the US.
But he’s in the news these days not because he has not won a race since the Derby, but because the guy who got him there, trainer Chip Woolley, was fired last week.

with the limited amount of races he’s going to

Jones to ride Gold Bead in Guineas

WOODBINE-BASED jockey Jonathon Jones will fly in to ride Jamaica-bred three-year-old colt Gold Bead in the May 31 Carib Guineas, first leg of the Triple Crown series, at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.
Jones will be joined by Calder-based Wilmer Galviz, who will partner possible Guineas favourite Treasure Hunt in the 1,800-metre showpiece.
Trainer Glenn Mendez spoke yesterday about his charges Gold Bead and Another Challenge, the latter scoring by 2 1/2 lengths, beating importation Regent Street and Gold Bead in the 1,750-metre Conditional Handicap ’B’ in a good 1:54.1 on May 1 on a wet/fast surface at Santa Rosa.
