GETTING HER PHIL70 Beyer for win in Passing Mood

GRACE PHIL surged late and won the PASSING MOOD Stakes yesterday at Woodbine for Hoof Hearted Stable and trainer Robert Tiller. Tiller, who has been hobbling around with a leg injury recently. had freshened the filly since she pooped out in the Lady Angela Stakes.

Tiller, who explained that Grace Phil had a low blood count following the Lady Angela, was happy to see Grace Phil return to form.
“She really wasn’t right for her last race,” said Tiller. “We trained her to this race, and I was a little upset with her last work being way too fast, but Stevie told me he just had her bent in half. I knew she was very fit, and very ready, and Stevie got it done and she got it done.”

The winner is by former Ontario sired Philanthropist, out of Loup de Grace  by Explosive Red. She cost $12,000 at auction, has won over $230,000 now and she was bred by Paradox Farm.

In other Saturday dashes,  R PAYNES PRINCE won a maiden allowance for Ontario sired guys at 1 mile on the grass for Tucci Stables and trainer Nick Gonzalez. The  3yo gelding is a Paynes Bay fellow, bred by Iris Bristow and recently claimed for $25,000. The gelding was the 2nd winner for jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson.
Paynes Bay is now retired from stud duty and livign at Winding Oaks Farm in Florida.
The 2nd place finisher from this race was 70 to 1 shot SILO RIDGE,  a 4yo by Legal Jousting, who had been pulled up in his first race. This guy came from miles behind, went very wide off the turn under an apprentice rider and closed nicely in a huge turnaround. Zelko Krcmar trains.

The turf races continue to excite as race 6 was anyone’s race through the stretch and at the wire, PULPATION had seemingly won her 2nd straight race for  Brenda Selwyn Waxman and trainer Mike Keogh. The Pulpit filly won the race but her rider Steve Bahen accidentlly hit POETIC KID in the head with his whip and they were disqualified. POETIC KID is a Shakespeare filly who was a nice price at 9 to 1 for her turf debut for Dell Ridge Farm. Kevin Attard trains.

It continues to be a nice year for Colebrook Farms and the Brnjas family as well as jockey Croey Fraser. Yesterday they teamed up to win with PSYCHOTHERAPY, a Niigon 4yo who is 2 for 8 now and an earner of  over $91,000.

LADY BEAR won her 2yo debut for $32,00 claiming by 9 3/4 lengths for the Bear Stables and trainer Reade Baker. She is a Bluegrass Cat filly out of Chit Chatter earned a 72 Beyer Figure which was almost the fastest Beyer of the day. The only faster winner was POETIC KID (75).

DANCE HEADED TO WOODBINE AGAIN

Ed Vaughan’s globetrotter won his first race in over a year in a conditions event on Town Moor on Thursday, but has run plenty of solid races in defeat.

The Arlington Million had been mooted for the six-year-old and could still be on his agenda, with the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury also in the mix.

Dance And Dance was a luckless sixth in the Woodbine Mile last September and that is his main objective again.

“He picked up a little cut but he’s all right and I’d imagine Canada

would be his big target again,” said Vaughan.

Bold Venture won a smash’em up Derby in 1936…he was unbeaten at 3 but bowed a tendon on the verge of becoming Triple Crown winner

Last week got rolling with the BOLD VENTURE STAKES,  a race inaugurated in 1956 at..FORT ERIE RACETRACK. It was won that year by Navy Page.
The BOLD VENTURE was named for a Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner who bowed a tendon before the Belmont Stakes.
He was a grandson of Swynford.
Bold Venture sired Triple Crown winner Assault.

ESSENCE HIT MAN, well on his way to another champion sprinter title and who knows maybe Horse of the Year, won the Bold Venture – Grade 3, ON Wed. night at Woodbine. He hooked up with Eternal Rule in the stretch run and would not let that rival get by him.

MARCAVELLY’S FIRST WINNER!

THE B’S AND E’S won his 2nd career start at Belmont on Sunday and became the first winner for Ontario sire Marcvelly (by Johannesburg).
The sire stands at Colebrook Farms in Uxbridge, Ontario and was a smart maiden winner on the Belmont grass just like his son.
Thoroughbred Daily News has the specs below:

THE B’S AND E’S (g, 2, Marcavelly–I’m the Business {NZ} {SW & MGSP-US, MSP-NZ, $322,895}, by

chance to take to the turf and become the first winner for her freshman sire (by Johannesburg), who was a
seven-length debut winner sprinting over this course in 2006. Straight to the lead, the homebred controlled the
pace and drew off to a 3 1/2-length success from Craving Carats (Street Sense).

THE FIGHT CONTINUES…

ONTARIO LIBERAL GOVERNMENT AND US CASINO OPERATORS SCORE A HOME RUN ON JUNE 20TH 2012

As Paul Harvey might have said, “This is the rest of the story.”

My Belief:
In my first article on May 14th I accused the Government of being lost in the fog or laying a smoke screen. The air has now cleared. They were laying a smoke screen and it worked. It was the opposition NDP and PCs who were lost in the fog.

The Liberal smoke screen / The perfect red herring was cancelling the slots at race tracks. A highly successful program contributing $1.1 billion annually to the Government coffers. But they wanted more without developing any programs to generate it. Along came the US Casino Operators Consortium with the answer. Now firmly entrenched in Windsor with Caesars Casino, in Northern Ontario with Casino Rama and in Niagara Falls with two casinos. All operated by the consortiums which includes Caesars in Las Vegas, Penn National Gaming in Pennsylvania, and a combination of families in New York and Chicago, operating the two casinos in Niagara Falls. These casinos not happy with their 40 per cent of profit tax free also wanted more. The perfect marriage made in hell.

Within five years the consortium would guarantee the government $2.5 billion annually in casino revenue and the deficit could be eliminated. From the Liberals’ point of view the perfect answer no work or forethought. High returns politically and possibly personally. The conduit was the principles of the OLG. Hands clean for the casinos and the government both, everybody wins except the residents of Ontario. The government could now be supported and possibly controlled by income from their casinos, and the Liberal Government skirts were clean.

The elephant was now in the tent, however there was one hurdle in the way, the highly successful slots at racetrack program.

GLASS HALF FULL

Tall Glass is the OTTB SPOTLIGHT on Paulick report

One could say that 11-year-old Tall Glass “competed” on the Ontario racing circuit, but I’m not sure many would have used the term “competitive” to describe him. Tall Glass’s career started in June of 2005, when he made his career debut at Woodbine in a Maiden Claiming event for a $16,000 tag. Unfortunately, he finished 11th of 11 horses and that day pretty much set the tone for his one year career, in which he made eight starts and failed to hit the board in all of them.

The writing was on the wall – Tall Glass was not going to be a profitable runner, so owner/breeder Larry Regan retired the horse to his farm and asked the Ontario-based LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society to help the horse find a new and more successful career path.

“Tall Glass was donated to LongRun by his owner a month after his first start,” said Vicki Pappas, Chairperson for LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society. “Mr. Regan has donated a number of horses to us in the past and has generally kept them at his farm at his expense until we are able to place them, which is a huge help to any rehoming program.”

EL GENERAL  May 11, 1999 – July 14, 2012
tribute by Will O Wind Farm for Ky.bed son of El Prado

On November 22, 2007, El General galloped across the finish line of Maryland’s Laurel
Park racetrack for the final time in his career. The 9th place finish was a quiet ending to a race
record that included 35 starts, 8 wins and $272,038 in earnings. At 8 years old, the veteran
gelding was rewarded with retirement, and was rehomed by his breeder and owner Adena
Springs. While one half of his career had ended, another began as he joined the Raynham Stables
family.

General earned a place among the hearts of Raynham Stables riders with his never-
ending work ethic and forgiving nature. His years at the track bred into him the try needed to
school 3’ courses with advanced students, or teach adult beginners how to post. General was a
gentleman both under saddle and on the ground – so much so that even the timid show moms
didn’t mind taking him for a stroll across the show grounds. A successful lower level event
horse, General qualified for the OHTA Championships after his first competitive season, taking
every new experience in stride.

On the morning of July 14th, General was three-quarters of the way around a pre-entry
level cross-country course when he suffered a catastrophic injury on the approach to a fence.
Emergency veterinarians responded immediately, and the decision was made to humanely
euthanize the big bay gelding on course. General passed peacefully and quietly, displaying the
class and wisdom that he exuded throughout his life.

Raynham Stables would like to thank Will O’ Wind farms, Geoff & Ann Morgan, and
Dr. Andrea Malatestinic for their compassion, sensitivity, preparedness and seamless
response. We would also like to thank the many event volunteers at Will O’ Wind horse trials for
their kind words, tact and patience. We extend our sincere condolences to the Sandoval family
and to the many individuals who had the pleasure of knowing and loving this kind soul.
General represents each hard-working off-the-track Thoroughbred that forms the
backbone of our sport. He was a pleasure to work with, ride and watch. Thank you for all the
gallops you gave us.
