SOUTHDALE OUT OF PLATE!
By Bill Tallon
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Southdale, a leading contender for the June 21 Queen’s Plate, came out of last weekend’s Plate Trial with an injury and is expected to be be sidelined for at least the balance of the summer.
A thorough examination on Monday found the source of the problem.
“He’s hurt up in the shoulder,” said Ian Black, who trains Southdale for owner/breeder Rod Ferguson.
“We blocked [froze] him from the foot to the ankle to the knee, and we still couldn’t get him to go sound. Assuming the shoulder is what it is, three months of stall rest usually fixes those things,” said Black. “It’s different if it’s muscle but I don’t think it is, to be honest with you.”

EIGHT HOMEBREDS VERSUS SIX PURCHASES IN 1 1/8 MILE FILLY CLASSIC
– $120,000 yearling WYNNING RIDE and $170,000 purchase TASTY TEMPTATION are up against homebreds FIRST CIRCLE, POLITELYPRECOCIOUS and MILWAUKEE APPEAL in Sunday’s Woodbine Oaks, the big class race race for Canadian-bred fillies.
The split of sales buys and homebreds is about even and many of the provinces top farms – owners, breeders or both – are in the race.
Ted Burnett’s Josham Farms is the breeder of TASTY TEMPTATION, a filly by the red-hot sire Medaglia d’Oro (Rachel Alexandra et al) and from the Tethra mare PARISIA, a stakes winner at Woodbine. The grey Tasty Temptation (gets her grey from El Prado, the sire of Medaglia d’Oro) and Parisia, whose damsire is Great Gladiator. This is the family of top locl sprinter Parisianprospector. Interesting that Burnett raced an older brother, Contraband, who is a claimer and the same scenario equates with Wynning Rid.
Wynning Ride is out of Woodbine runner Wynyard and was bred in Ontario by Jim and Alice Sapara. The mare’s first 2 foals were raced by the Sapara’s – Dafoe and Mossbank and they were modest runners. This gal is Grade 1 placed. The homebreds from Gus Schickedanz’s Schonberg Farm include First Circle, a full sister to Breeders’ Stakes winner Marland and Politelyprecocious, like her mate by Langfuhr and out of the stakes placed Dr. Adagio mare Stop Looking. Politely precocious was unsold at the local yearling sale for just over $44,000 U.S.
Milwaukee Appeal was bred by Eugene George’s C.E. Farm and is by Milwaukee Appeal out of the mare Appealing Forum.
IN THE WORKS
Daily Racing Form’s Bill Tallon gets a rundown on the final workouts of Oaks contenders:
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Tasty Temptation and Milwaukee Appeal, the second- and third-place finishers in the open La Lorgnette at 1 1/16 miles here May 17, head a probable field of 14 for Sunday’s $500,000 Woodbine Oaks.
The Woodbine Oaks, at 1 1/8 miles, is this country’s premier test for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies.
Politelyprecocious and First Circle, both trained by Mike Keogh, had their final Woodbine Oaks tune-ups over six furlongs here Monday.
Politelyprecocious, who finished seventh in the Selene, breezed in 1:14.20 on the training track while going in company with older stablemate Zarroc. Regular rider Constant Montpellier was aboard for the move.
First Circle, first and then second in her only two career starts, both at seven furlongs, breezed in 1:14.80 on the main track under jockey Jono Jones.
“She rated in behind company and got a little education,” Keogh said.

“WE’RE GOING TO WIN IT NO DOUBT”
BELMONT STAKES NOTES
from Belmont Park
Borel Predicts Victory for Mine That Bird; “Candy” Works
Story by: Jenny Kellner
– Under jockey Calvin Borel, Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird had his final pre-Belmont Stakes work Monday morning at Churchill Downs, covering a half-mile in 50.00 in preparation for Saturday’s $1 million race at Belmont Park.
Clockers caught the Birdstone gelding in splits of :13.40, :26, and :38.40, galloping out five furlongs in 1:02.20 and up in 1:15, in preparation for the 1½-mile Belmont, a move which had Borel brimming with confidence.
“We’re going to win it, no questions asked,” Borel told reporters. “I loved the way he went today. He really came bouncing off the track once we were done. That’s what I love about him. He’s just so happy.”
Borel, who won the Preakness with the filly Rachel Alexandra, beating the Derby winner by a diminishing length, will be back
aboard Mine That Bird Saturday. And although the Triple Crown will go unclaimed for the 31st year, Borel has a chance for his own triple, as he tries to become the first jockey in history to sweep all three races aboard two different horses.
Mine That Bird, owned by Double Eagle Ranch and Buena Suerte Equine, will walk Tuesday and gallop a mile and one-half Wednesday morning, after which he will be flown to New York, a departure in travel style from his journeys to Churchill Downs and Pimlico, for which trainer Chip Woolley personally drove the horse van.
WinStar Farms’ Mr. Hot Stuff, 15th in the Derby, will be on the same flight, while trainer Eoin Harty will arrive on Tuesday and will attend the post position draw Wednesday morning at Belmont Park’s Garden Terrace.
Harty was pleased with Mr. Hot Stuff following his five-furlong, bullet breeze of 1:00.00 on the fast PolyTrack at Keeneland this morning under exercise rider Brian Walsh.
“He worked very well this morning,” said Harty, as the Tiznow colt recorded the fastest of 12 works at the distance. We didn’t want to do too much with him, but we wanted to do enough for him to get something out of it. He galloped out [six furlongs in 1:14]. He’s been training beautifully.”
Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado, who won the Belmont Stakes with Sarava (2002), at 70-1 the longest win payoff in Belmont
Stakes history, and Birdstone (2004), who squashed Smarty Jones’ Triple Crown bid before a Belmont Park record crowd of 120,139, has the mount.
Meanwhile, at Belmont Park, Chocolate Candy, fifth behind Mine That Bird in the Derby, also had his final pre-race workout, covering a half-mile in 50.25 just after 7 a.m. under exercise rider Lindsey Molina.
“He has progressed very well since he first got here (four days after the Derby),” said Molina of the Candy Ride colt, who is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer for the Craig Family Trust. “Now, all I can say is, he just skips over the track. Today, that was just galloping for him. I had to take another hold of him to keep him from doing more.”
William Mack and Robert Baker’s Flying Private and Marylou Whitney Stable’s Luv Gov, trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, arrived at Belmont Park from Kentucky late Sunday.
“I think a horse has to have a high cruising speed and be able to maintain it to win,” said Lukas, who won the Belmont Stakes four times with Tabasco Cat (1994), Thunder Gulch (1995), Editor’s Note 1996) and Commendable (2000). “Those horses who are steady, and can maintain it for a mile and a half, are the kind which is successful in this race. Both of mine fit that mold; whether they do it quick enough is the problem.”
Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito, who has committed Robert V. LaPenta’s Miner’s Escape and Brave Victory to the Belmont Stakes, worked My Meadowview Farm’s Nowhere to Hide a half-mile on the fast Oklahoma training track at Saratoga Race Course this morning in 49.92. breezing. Nowhere to Hide ran 17th in the Kentucky Derby.
“After to talking to Mr. (Len) Riggio, we’ve decided to pass on the Belmont and look for another spot for him,” said Zito, a two-time Belmont Stakes winner with Birdstone (2004) and Da’Tara (2008).
Miner’s Escape and Brave Victory, who worked a half-mile on Saturday in 48:66 in tandem over Belmont Park’s fast main track, will attempt to give LaPenta back-to-back Belmont Stakes winners. Meadow Stables, with Riva Ridge (1972) and 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, is the most recent stable to have accomplished that feat.
TWISTED WIT – WIN NO. 15
– Multiple stakes winner TWISTED WIT, with earnings of $917,000 in his career and 15 wins from 58 races, won on May 31 at Monmouth Park for $7,500 claiming for owner and trainer Robert Mosco and he was claimed. The Distorted Humor Canadian-bred, previously raced by Rolph Davis and trained by Robert Tiller at Woodbine, is now owned by SURVIVOR STABLE and trained by Patrock Marrotta.
That same day at Mountaineer Park, MOONSHINE JUSTICE, another Candian-bred stakes winner, won a starter allowance for $5,000 for his 3rd wqin in succession for Loren Cox. The son of Whiskey Wisdom has won 13 of 47 and $561,000.

Murtagh set for Rip ride
Johnny Murtagh is set to ride Rip Van Winkle in Saturday’s Investec Derby at Epsom.
Murtagh has the choice of Aidan O’Brien’s six runners in the race and although the rider has made no secret of the regard in which he holds the 2000 Guineas fourth, speculation had been rife about which horse he would partner.
However, O’Brien has now made his provisional riding plans with Seamus Heffernan pencilled in to team up with Fame And Glory. Ryan Moore is due to ride Dante winner Black Bear Island with Pat Smullen the choice for Lingfield Derby Trial winner Age Of Aquarius.
Colm O’Donoghue is set for Chester Vase winner Golden Sword with Richard Hughes on Masterofthehorse, runner-up to his stable companion in the Chester event.
A Ballydoyle statement said: “These riding plans are not set in stone but this is the way we are thinking at the moment.”

BEYER FIGURES BEING TWEAKED
from Daily Racing Form
– Whether you believe in them or not, the Beyer Speed Figures came to the Daily Racing Form years ago and can provide an idea on the general ability of a horse at a certain distance or surface. The introduction of Polytrack and other synthetic surfaces have surely made the calculators of the figures scratch their heads. That subject cannot be delved into on this site but the curator of the ‘figs’, Andrew Beyer, said some tweaking is needed:
Beyer: Tweaking formula for synthetic figures
By Andrew Beyer
Since synthetic tracks were introduced in North America, one fact about them has become indisputable: They are different.
They are less speed-favoring than traditional dirt. As a result, the style of racing on the new surfaces is different. Typically, the early pace is slower and the horses are more tightly bunched at the finish. Speed figures are different on synthetic surfaces, too. The distinctive nature of these races has prompted a change in the mathematical underpinnings of the Beyer Speed Figures.
The new calculations go into effect on Wednesday and will be applied retroactively to Jan. 1. They will make synthetic figures closer to those for dirt. Top-class stakes horses will earn figures as much as 4 points higher. Many bottom-level races will be 3 or 4 points lower. Figures for horses in the middle of the class spectrum will be changed to a smaller extent, if at all.
