Good luck to STORMY LORD, millionaire was claimed last weekend – Cindy Pierson Dulay photo

TWO CANADIAN-BREDS STAY IN THE U.S. STORMY LORD CLAIMED!
Both originally went unsold at auction

STORMY LORD and HAVERHILL had mixed results last week in Florida. However, both Canadian-owned and Canadian-bred geldings are in the care of new owners today.

STORMY LORD, a 6yo owned and bred by Kinghaven Farms until recently, was claimed for $80,000 from a last-place finish at Gulfstream Park recently. The son of Stormy Atlantic – Lady Auchamore was bought back as a yearling for just $10,000. He went on to win more than $1.1 million!
A multiple graded stakes winner, he dipped into the claiming race and was scooped up by Chuck and Maribeth Sandford LLC, owners of the graded stakes winner TAKE CHARGE INDY. The new owners, who have been in racing only since 2009, have their horses trained by Patrick Byrne.
Bye Stormy, and good luck!

HAVERHILL is a son of Ontario sire Saffir out of Half a Dozen, bred by Dr. John Brown’s Spring Farm. This guy was bought back for $1,800 as a yearling at the Woodbine sale and he raced for Brown and trainer Bev Chubb at the allowance levels until his final local start last December.

Dropped in for $16,000 claiming, he was taken by Katerina Vassilieva, who raced the gelding 3 times at Gulfstream, with 2 seconds and a win.

It was the win that got her phone ringing. The gelding won the $25,000 optional claiming race in 1:09 4/5, good for a 101 Beyer Figure, one of the top numbers BY ANY HORSE in a race up to 1 mile this year in North America.

He has since been sold to GARY BARBER and will be trained by Peter Miller in California. No word on the sale price but surely the owner/trainer made out well on her original $16K investment.

Good luck Haverhill!

SPRING TO ACTION

Casse stable emerges from dry spell with 2 OBS stakes wins

Mark Casse-trained daughters of Spring At Last were one-two in the twenty-fourth running of the $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes for 3-year-old fillies as the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company hosted its annual Day of Champions race card. The race came down to a replay of last September’s Natalma Stakes (G2) at Woodbine, with Gary Barber and Stoneway Farm’s Spring Venture besting John C. Oxley’s Spring in the Air (CAN)  by three quarters of a length, as West Point Thoroughbreds’ Toasting settled for third. Spring Venture tracked the early pace in second before taking command going to the far turn. Challenged through the lane with the three fillies head and head into the final furlong, Spring Venture surged in the final yards under Jermaine  Bridgmohan to outduel Spring in the Air as Toasting weakened for third. The winner, supplemented to the race, ran the mile and a sixteenth in 1: 44 4/5. Sold by Eisaman Equine, Agent, at the 2012 OBS June Sale, she’s now 6-4-0-0 and has earned $376,821. watch her under tack video

Kenwood Racing LLC’s Michael With Us was a maiden going into the twenty-fourth running of the $100,000 OBS Championship Stakes for colts and geldings, but the three-year-old son of Bluegrass Cat came running late under Hall of Fame  rider Edgar Prado and ran down Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Brazilian Court for a half length victory. Tri-Star Racing, LLC, Joe B. Denson and Brent Gasaway’s Brown Almighty was third. Trained by Stephen L. DiMauro, the winner ran the mile and a sixteenth in 1:45 flat. Sold by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, at the 2012 OBS March Sale, he’s now 5-1-2-2 and has earned $80,320. watch his under tack video

In the afternoon’s first race, the twentieth running of the $50,000 OBS Sprint for 3-year-old fillies, Steve Ballou and Harriet Waldron’s Cor Cor, supplemented to the race and trained by Joan Scott, burst out of the gate at the break to a big lead, set blistering fractions and cruised to a 4-3/4 length victory in a track record equaling 1:09 3/5 for six furlongs. Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence’s Over the Counter settled for second with James and Alice Sapara’s Leinan checking in third. Cor Cor, a Florida-bred daughter of Smoke Glacken, ridden by Scott Spieth, was sold by Southern Chase Farm, Inc. (Greg & Karen Dodd), Agent, at the 2012 OBS June Sale. She’s now 5-4-1-0 and has earned $165,800. watch her under tack video

John C. Oxley’s Conquestor strolled out of the gate in the twentieth $50,000 OBS Sprint for colt and geldings and dropped far off the pace, but the 3-year-old colt by Broken Vow surged four wide around the turn under Gary Boulanger, caught the leaders in mid-stretch and won going away by three lengths. The time for six furlongs was 1:11 flat. Rancho Grande Farm and Ideas Medical’s King Solomon was second; Amaty Racing Stables and Sterling Stables’ Mind Spell checked in third. It’s the first win in three starts for Conquestor, and the first win on the comeback trail for rider Boulanger, returning to the saddle after serious injuries suffered in 2005. Sold by Halcyon Hammock Farm, Agent, at the 2012 OBS April Sale, Conquestor has earned $39,644 to date.

The win was very popular as Boulanger, Canadian-born, has not ridden in 8 years after a life-threatening accident. He has been working horses for Casse and could be riding at Woodbine this year. (He rode there in 2000 and 2001 and won the Queen’s Plate and Oaks on Dancethruthedawn).

OBS SALE _ Ocala, average up!

Canadian-bred Kitten’s Joy colt at $260,000

Karly Kemp is the listed breeder of a strong Kitten’s Joy – Oh What a Feeling, by Dixieland Band and the Kemp family own Ballycroy Training Centre in Loretto, ON. They sold this colt for $50,000 last year at the CTHS Ontario yearling sale to Biltmore Racing Stable.

Then the horse was re-sold yesterday for$260,000 to agent Justin Casse, who may have been buying for Gary Barber. (There seems to be an awful lot of secrecy when people buy horses, even though they are going to race them under their names in the near future).

The sale continues today.

JOHN ROBBINS/Bullet News

FORT ERIE – Progressive Conservative MPP Monte McNaughton is criticizing Premier Kathleen Wynne’s handling of the horse-racing file so far, saying the government has left thousands of people waiting to find out what’s going to happen this year.

Last week, the government announced transition funding for four more race tracks.

Luhm: New law jump-starts horse racing at Wyoming Downs

It’s been four years since Utahns who live along the Wasatch Front could jump in their car, drive less than three hours and bet on a live horse race.

That’s about to change.

Wyoming Downs owner Eric Nelson has announced he will reopen his race track — located just across the state line in Evanston — for a 16-day meet in 2014
