GOODOLDHOCKEYGAME Bull Page 71

It was almost like family day at Woodbine on Saturday with Steve and Beverly Owens and Frank and Jennifer DiGiulio Jr. celebrating stakes wins with their homebreds: Ontario breds from small breeding businesses:

SCORES! GOODOLDHOCKEYGAME rallied up the rail in Bull Page

GOODOLDHOCKEYGAME parlayed an impressive debut win into a stakes score in his 2nd career race on Saturday at Woodbine. The flashy chestnut son of Old Forester – Domasca Bella by Domasca Dan came up the rail under Patrick Husbands to win the 6 furlong dash in 1:09.81, good for a 71 Beyer Figure.

Frank DiGuilio and his family celebrated their 2nd stakes win in a week (Sweater Weather won the La Lorgnette last weekend) and both are trained by Robert Tiller.

The victory marked the third stakes win of the meet for Di Giulio Jr. as owner, adding to previous wins by Sweater Weather in the Eternal Search and La Lorgnette, also under Tiller’s tutelage.

Tiller believes that Goodoldhockeygame can only improve with maturity.

“I think he’s still a green horse. I don’t think we’ve seen his best. He should improve. He’s a big long-striding colt and we’ve liked him from day one,” said Tiller.

DOMASCA BELLA won the Royal North Stakes for the DiGiulio’s and has produced champion sprinter INDIANAPPLE IS as well as $300,00 earner Yolie, $100,000 earner Tequilamockingbird and others.

Goodoldhockeygame, bred in Ontario by his owner, banked $75,000 in victory.

He paid $8.20, $4.60 and $2.60, combining with Super Colerosa ($7.50, $3.20) for a $56.60 (2-6) exactor.  A 2-6-3 (Seffeara, $2.10) triactor was worth $152, while a $1 Superfecta [2-6-3-1 (Phil’s Cocktail)] came back $135.30. The stewards deemed that Undercover Cat received an unfair start and was declared a non-starter.

ZAZINGA! Steals the La Prevoyante for Owens family

The pretty livery chestnut ZAZINGA got a lot of huges in the winner’s circle after she zipped to victory in the 1 mile La Prevoyante Stake son grass under Gary Boulanger. The daughter of Head Chopper – Town Dance by Dance Brightly got away with a modest first 2 furlong time and then opened up a quick 5 lengths before surging to the win in 1:33.43 – an 83 Beyer Figure. That was a new top for the 3-year-old who has won 3 of 12 races. The filly only discovered grass 2 races ago when she won an allowance race.
Head Chopper was a remarkable runner by Mutakkdim – he won the Elgin Stakes and was beaten a nose in the BC Derby. He raced for Owns and Camilla Farmas and partners and has sired a few horses for Owens.
Town Dance was 0 for 1 on the track and she has produced the good 2yo of this year Seffeara, who was 3rd in the Bull Page for Owens on this day.
Regal Conqueror was 3 to 5 and rallied to be 2nd over Elgin, the latter is a Peaks and Valleys filly who was getting a stakes placing for owner/breeder Curraghmore Farm. Curraghamore’s previous stakes placed was more than a dozen years ago.

More Saturday from Woodbine

Nothing wrong with the rail path on Saturday, a very warm, sunny day.

Race 1-  EYE OF THE WORLD trailed early in the 1 1/8 mile race and then came up the rail in the stretch when that path opened and he won at odds on for $8,000 claiming. Gabe Grossberg’s  5-year-old gelding was claimed by Norm KcKnight.
Race 2- A nice 2yo filly maiden allowance, not restricted, and how about the Ontario bred GALINA POINT blowing by her rivals to win easily for Cary and Phil Brooks. The winner is by Saffir out of Celtic Craft by Danehill and it was her 3rd career race. She won by 6 3/4 lengths at 6 to 1 while favoured Responsive, by strong Hope, was 2nd over Bears Refelction (First Samurai)
Galina Point, being an Ontario sired filly, ran for a purse of $79,000 with the bonuses.
Race 3- a maiden allowance for older Ontario sired gals and off a one-year layoff, PISCO rallied up the rail when allowed room and won easily for Ruby Farm and trainer Jamie Attard. This Paynes Bay – Caledon Bound by Boundary filly was bred by Heste Sport. She was 2nd in both starts as a 2-year-old. David Moran rode.
Race 5- A wild DESTINY’S SONG literally ran like a horse possessed on the pace in this $16,000 claiming event and that was surprising for  a gelding who likes to rate and rally. He hung tough but was going too fast and was eventually passed by  SEELEY’S BAY, who is owned by Parkway Racing and trained by Sam DiPasquale. Luis Contreras rode.
The winning Beyer Figure of 76 was one of the higher numbers of the day,
Race 6- a maiden allowance for 2yo fillies, Ontario sired, and ELLA’S MUSIC rallied up the rail (see a trend here?) and became the 3rd winner for the 1st crop sire NOT BOURBON. The $100,000 purchase (June 2yo sale in Ocala) is a half sister to 2yo stakes winner Bear’s Kid (who sired a winner on the card). Ella’s Music is owned by Mike Anderson Racing and trained by Brian Lynch and Contreras rode.
race 7 – ATTAINMENT won her maiden on July 27 and then came back 2 months later to win this first leevel allowance race for Pin Oak Stable and trainer Malcolm Pierce.
Race 9 – I’M JUST SAYIN was a predictable winner in this Ontario sired allowance race at 5 furlongs for Natrual Eight and TC Racing. Jesse Campbell rode the 3-year-old filly who was bred by Phil Lanning and and Doris Carey.
race 10 – a 79 Beyer Figure was all that THE BEST GLACIER needed to put this $40,000 claiming race on ice for his new owners – Horse’n around and Martha Gonzalez. Justin Stein rode this Florida-bred 6-year-old who was claimed for $25,000 in his Woodbine debut (he came in from the US by way of Assiniboia Downs) and he was
here is a goldmine of a filly who cost $7,000 at auction last year, bought from Spring Farm, and she won her 3rd career race on Saturday

ARE YOU A BELIEVER? SHARED BELIEF unbeaten heading to CLASSIC

They just kept taking me wide, taking me wide, and I believe, if you want to press the pace or take me out wide a little bit, OK. But doing it at all costs just to get me beat isn’t the way it should be done. It was to the extreme. I thought it was ridiculous. You just don’t do that.” –

Bill Dwyre feature story..

Saturday was a tough and tumble day of horse racing at Santa Anita. The two big favorites won and three additional horses got their free tickets punched to the Breeders’ Cup.

And somewhere up there, smiling broadly, was Teddy Roosevelt. He would have loved all the rough riding.

A gathering of 17,023 was lured to the Great Race Place by the prospect of five Grade I races, each worth $300,000. Each winner of these got an all-expense-paid trip to the Oct. 31-Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup racing extravaganza.

SUPER SATURDAY NOTES:

Tonalist

NYRA PHOTO – COGLIANESE – TONALIST is sharp in Jockey Club Gold Cup

SHARED BELIEF bounced off his 115 Beyer Speed Figure that he earned in the Pacific Classic (Polytrack) but had a wide run and a good stretch bid to win the Awesome Again – Grade 1 at Santa Anita, This son of Candy Ride out of Common Hope by Storm Cat, owned by Jerry Hollendorfer, Jim Rome and partners, is heading to a clash with TONALIST as an unbeaten 3-year-old.

So far, the fellow does not know what it means to not win.

In a virtual repeat of last year’s race, Canadian-bred Private Zone lost the lead in the stretch but came back along the inside to win the Grade 1, $400,000 Vosburgh for sprinters 3-years-old and up on TVG Super Saturday at Belmont Park.

Making his second start of the year and first for trainer Alfredo Velazquez, Private Zone was away well under jockey Martin Pedroza in the six-furlong race before conceding the top spot to Happy My Way, who led through an opening quarter-mile in 22.42 seconds. Private Zone drew on even terms with Happy My Way on the far turn and was in front by a length through a half in 44.81 seconds.

Private Zone led coming into the stretch but was headed by Dads Caps inside the eighth pole. Pedroza switched his whip to his left hand, and Private Zone found more and got up to win by a neck. Palace, the 7-5 favorite, finished 1 ¾ lengths behind the winner in third and was a neck in front of fourth-place finisher Salutos Amigos.

The final time for six furlongs was 1:08.95. Private Zone, the 5-1 co-fourth choice in the field of eight, returned $13.80 for a $2 win wager.

In the 2013 Vosburgh, Private Zone won by the same margin after being passed by Justin Phillip.

“He’s a warrior,” said Pedroza. “He’s a great competitor. He doesn’t like to get beat. Once he looks a horse in the eyeball he just gains confidence. I haven’t been on a horse as game as this horse in 30 years.”

Private Zone, a 5-year-old gelding who was previously trained by Doug O’Neill, had finished fourth in the Grade 3 Turf Monster Handicap, his grass debut, on September 1 at Parx Racing.

With his Vosburgh score, Private Zone gave Velazquez his first Grade 1 victory in a 31-year career.

The Vosburgh is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” race in the Sprint division. Private Zone will now target the Sprint on November 1 at Santa Anita, with a decision on whether he’ll remain with Velazquez or be returned to O’Neill to be made later.

Private Zone is owned by Good Friends Stable, a partnership which includes former jockey Rene Douglas. Private Zone began his career in Panama before he was purchased and sent to the United States upon Douglas’ advice.

AMERICAN PHAROAH – – did you see this 2yo? He looks a bit bizarre with hardly any tail, but this son of Pioneer ofthe Nile is a good one – two 101 beyer Figures in succession for Zayat Stables. Colt was named by a fan in a contest held by Zayat Stables.

BELLE GALLANTEY – ouch – here is a true racetrack story that is about as wild as can be – this 5-year-old mare was originally owned by Canadian GLEN TODD,owner of Northern American Thoroughbred Horse Company. She debuted at Hastings Park and raced there 3 times before she was claimed for $30,000. The After Market gal raced for numerous owners over the years, she raced for $12,500 claiming too. She went from Doug O’Neill to Bob Hess to Mitch Friedman. She was claimed late last year for $35,000 and is not a 2-time Grade 1 winner, 5 races after she won a starter allowance ($12,500).

Rudy Rodriguez trains this mare, who was bred by Pam and Martin Wyod (breeders of Shared Belief).

ANGELA RENEE beat CONQUEST ECLIPSE to win the Chandalier – Grade 1, late last evening EST. The winner is a Bernardini filly who was named after the late housekeeper of owner Siena Farm in Kentucky, Angela Renee Rowe. Mark casse apears to have another Breeders’ Cup starters in Conquest Renee for Conquest Stables.

WINDFIELDS FARM 2014

“[It was] very nostalgic and great to see the upkeep of the core of the old Windfields. Meeting former work mates was very special. The public filled bus after bus to come and see the graves and the site. Windfields means an awful lot to Canadians both near and far and this was a great example of that yesterday.” – Bernard McCormack
