ADENA SPRINGS CANADA invites everyone to see its 8 stallions at the new stallion complex in Aurora tomorrow at an open house.
The state of the art complex will house 12 stallions total, has a lab and brand new facilities for mares and staff.
The eight stallions moving to Canada include a few that were already in Ontario at Gardiner (now Paradox Farm) while the stallion building was being built.
MILWAUKEE BREW, SLIGO BAY, and GIANT GIZMO move to the new digs and are joined by Grade 1 winner MAST TRACK, Epsom Derby (grade 1) winner NORTH LIGHT, WILKO, winner of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, SHOWING UP and the regally bred SINGING SAINT.
The stallion explosion is one of the biggest of any one breeding farm in the country in recent memory and the occasion will be dressed up with refreshments and stallion showings at 2:30 and 4:30.
BLOCKBUSTER WEEKEND CARDS – SCARY GOOD AT WOODBINE
Sharpen your handicapping pencils, there are about 200 horses racing in 21 races this weekend at Woodbine.
It is the last weekend for grass stakes and Saturday’s RIVER MEMORIES features last year’s champion grass mare POINTS OF GRACE, who won the race last year.
The mare meets a tough group with a host of shippers.
Also on Saturday, the PRINCESS ELIZABETH, the top race for Canadian-bred 2yo fillies drew a field of 10 but there are just 2 winners in the race.
The favourite may be a maiden – perhaps LISVERNANE, who will have Irish jock Davey Moran on board for Carolyn Costigan and family. You may remember the Princess Elizabeth from last year when Moran shipped in to ride Roan Inish to an upset score for the same team.
Conteners in Saturday’s race include CHARISMATICALLY and GRAND STYLE.
on Sunday, there are 2 more stakes races and the LABEEB features BARBARO’S FULL BROTHER NICANOR. The speedy Dynaformer fellow is not as good as his famed bro but he could have an impact on the Labeeb, a 1 mile turf event that has attracted a strong field.
The other stakes on Sunday is the Ontario Fashion, a wild speed fest that could go to INDIAN APPLE IS.
THURSDAY AND WEDNESDAY WRAP FROM WOODBINE
Let the madness begin!
Picking winners will be even more difficult at Woodbine with huge fields and bizarre horses filling the races, now that Fort Erie has closed.
The results from Wednesday night alone prove that you need to have a really open mind right now.
Off the top, Wednesday night’s opener was yet another longshot winner from the Pat Parente barn – JAZZUNTA WAS 9TH at 5 furlongs for $25K 2nd time out in her 2yo campaign but then won at 7 furlongs Wed. night for $20K at a mere 30 to 1. She had her 3rd different jockey (Stein) and a 23 Beyer Figure but still neat 60 Beyer Figure’ed Hawaiian Princess.
OCTAVO was a more predictable winner in race 2 for the Steve Asmussen – Patrick Husbands team – it’s first winner together.
The 3yo Forestry colt was down from $23,500 to just $9,500 claiming off a short layoff.
JADRAN came from the clouds to rally and win a 5 furlong maiden race for $25,000 in race 3 for a very excited team from the ROBERT GERL barn. The 2yo by first year sire ARTIE SCHILLER had blinkers off, 2nd time Lasix and was sown in class; Ryan Pacheco won his 4th race at Woodbine with the steer.
What has got into JOVIAL JILL?
Last year, this Bold Executive – Jovial Blast gal was 0 for 15, this year she is 4 for 11! Owned by Frank Sansano and trained by Kathy Ranford, the 5yo won for the 3rd consecutive time Wed. night with a rail rally on the turn back from 6 to 5 furlongs. She was racing for $16K claiming and ridden again by Omar Moreno.
Aaaah, the beauty of the horse drawing in from the also eligible list. Sure, it’s hard to get a read on why this works but it sure does. SUPER NEKIA DREW IN FOR $7,500 CLAIMING , for 42% trainer Mike Pino and was still 7 to 1. He won with a wide, pressing trip for his 4th score of his career. Luis Contreras rode.
MORENO won again with AURORA PROSPECT, owned by Linmac Farms and trained by John Cardella, won for $10,000 claiming, a new low for the Arch gal. She rallied to win for the 2nd time this season and was coming out of a race won by the red hot Jovial Jill.
The feature of the night went to GOLD DUST LADY, who was winning for the 3rd time in her last 4 races for True North Stable and trainer Lorne Richards. She followed the trend of the night as she came from well back and blew away the field for $60,000 claiming. She is 4 for 12 in her career and 3 for 6 at Woodbine and she is by Chapel Royale.
The best news of the night came in the very last race when apprentice rider CASSIE GARCEA won her first race in her 6th Woodbine mount aboard the Brahms colt BLUSHING BRAT. The Darren Glennon trainee was turning back to a sprint from a route distance and he raced very wide all the way but rallied and won for a maiden score for $10,000.
Garcea used to be assistant to trainer Reade Baker.
ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON, Glenn Harvey’s Kelynack Racing Stable has been coming to life and BANSHEE INDIAN won the 1st race for maiden $25,000. The 2yo by Indian Ocean was making her 5th start and and she had the highest last-race Beyer Figure.

Form was a bit better to understand on Thursday – SPANISH WEDDING was a logical winner for the suddenly hot ROBERT GERL barn. The 4yo filly, dropping for $40,000 to $20,000 claiming and switching from turf to Polytrack, won as a big favourite for her 4th career score in 17 races and her 2nd in 4 Woodbine main track attempts. She was claimed by owner Frank Cirillo.
A pair of Ontario sired allowance races came off the grass – the first went to the promising gelding BRITE SABBETH, who led all the way to win the 1 mile and 70 yard race for non-winners of 2. He is owned and bred by Joe Trdak and is by the local stallion GUN POWER, who was last reported to be at stud at Calibre Farm in Newmarket. He is an unraced son of Unbridled.
Brite Sabbeth is out of Honored Brite by Matter of Honor and trained by Carlo Fuoco.
GOLD CASTLE won a non-winners of 2 for Ivan Dalos in race 4, a $20,0000 claiming race. Trained by David Bell, the Malabar Gold Ontario bred was dropping from $37,500.
In race 5, a $10,000 maiden filly race, the big fave RED SIERRA came from post 14 to win for the hot barn of John Mattine. The filly is by Indian Charlie and she was dropping from $16K and getting Contreras on board.
The other allowance race for Ontario sired guys at 1 mile and 70 yards (off the turf event) was won by the TORONTO STAR’S BEST BERT – Pirate’s Legend, who rallied extremely wide under Gerry Olguin to win with the turf-to-Polytrack approach and the turn-back. The white faced fellow, owned by Lisa Guaraldi, has had a litany of trainers in his career, had not won in a couple of years, but broke through for trainer Mark Blouin yesterday for his 2nd win in his 26th race at 8 to 1!
PIRATE’S LEGEND, by Perigee Moon, did not wear shoes.
In race 7, a 5 furlong dash for non-winners of 1 ‘other than’, WILDCAT MARIE was a big fave and went 21 1/5 early in the race and won handily in a sharp 56 4/5 for Joe Baldesarra and trained Marty Drexler. The Wildcat Heir gal was claimed 2 starts ago for $40,000 and she won $35, 820 with the win.

HOOH WHY’S OWNER GAIL GEE PASSES AWAY

This was a shocking story – GAIL GEE was at Woodbine for the local yearling sale last month and regaled us with stories of HOOH WHY. A fun, boisterous, personable woman, she was a good friend of Tony Goswell, the bloodstock agent for many Canadian owners.
She will be missed.

Ocala horsewoman Gail Gee died suddenly Tuesday morning at her Derby Daze Farm.
Gee, 45, was found in front of a barn in her car by one of the farm’s employees early Tuesday. The vehicle was still running and had driven up a small berm on the property. The car’s convertible top was down, and when the employee went to investigate, he noticed Gee was not breathing and called 911.
No foul play is suspected, and an autopsy will be performed, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
Gee captured national attention in 2009 when Hooh Why, a filly she bred and raced, won the $400,000 Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland. Hooh Why was the second-longest shot in the field at odds of 24-1.
