CANADIAN WINNERS AND OTHER COOL CANADIAN NEWS
WHY KATHERINE is as tough as nails in the female grass category at Woodbine and the daughter of Whywhywhy, owned by Ontario’s TERRA RACING of Dom Romeo, won an allowance race at Gulfstream yesterday by an easy 5 lengths. She sizzled 1 1/16 miles on the grass in 1:40.54, good for a career best Beyer Figure of 90.
Tino Attard saddled the filly for the Romeo family. She has won $184,000 in her career and is one to watch for grass racing at Woodbine in 2014.
HOT AND SPICY was one of several Canadian bred 3yos to win on the weekend and add some flavour (should I say spice?) to the 3yo Canadian classics this year. This grey gal was making her career debut for Bill Clifton and trainer James Bond and she romped in the 7 1/2 furlong grass race posting a 76 Beyer Figure.
A $250,000 yearling purchase from the consignment of Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency and bred by Bob Harvey and Al Wortzman, Hot and Spicy is by Tale of the Cat out of Dynamite Cocktail and is a half sister to champion and stakes winner HOLLINGER.

Also at Laurel, Canadian owner GEORGE MCGAFFIN (he used to sing the National Anthem at Woodbine) is the owner of stakes placed 3yo Ontario bred AVIDDIVA, a Wilko filly bred by Andy Stronach. The filly had a huge lead early in the Caesar’s Wish Stakes worth $100,000 but was caught. She was an inexpensive yearling purchase and her Beyer of 61 from the race was her career best in 4 races.

TRIALS DRAW STAKES WINNING TRAINER TO AIKEN
Justin Nixon says Coltimus Prime will return on synthetic surface
by BEN BAUGH
Stakes winning trainer Justin Nixon was among the faces that could be found on the Aiken Training Track clocker’s stand on Saturday.
The horseman who saddled stakes placed Coltimus Prime in last weekend’s Tampa Bay Derby, brought two unraced 3-year-old geldings to compete in the Iselin Hall of Fame Trophy, the day’s sixth race in the Aiken Trials. The entry of Colleen Beaumier would produce positive results. Johnny Whitebird held off Dogwood Stable’s Shipwreck Kelly to score a narrow victory, and Freddieboy would place third in the same race.
“I’ve been hearing about this place for about 15 years,” said Nixon, who’s from Windsor, Ont., Canada. “A good friend of mine, Campbell Wilson, used to come down here, and told me about the trials, and another good friend of mine, Robbie Martin, who worked for Mike Keogh, also told me about the trials. I had always wanted to come to it. We had a couple of unraced 3-year-olds. I called, and asked if there would be a race for them, and there was. So, we thought, let’s make a day of it.”

GULFSTREAM RACE 10 NO-CONTEST
A spill in the early stages of Race 10 on Sunday’s program at Gulfstream Park prompted the Stewards to declare the race a ‘No Contest’ in order to protect the safety of the jockeys and horses. Jockey Edgar Prado was unseated by his mount approaching the first turn and remained on the course as the horses continued down the backstretch and into the far turn. Acting quickly to avoid a potential accident, the Stewards declared the race a ‘No Contest’ and track announcer Larry Collmus quickly made the announcement for the benefit of the track patrons and the participants in the two-turn turf race.
Due to the quick action of the Stewards, there were no further incidents on the track. Prado, a Hall of Fame jockey, eventually sat up and was taken to First Aid, where he complained of right shoulder pain. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in nearly Hollywood for evaluation.
“The safety of our riders and horses has to come first,” said Gulfstream Park President Tim Ritvo. “When the outrider got to the jockey, the jockey wasn’t moving and the outrider immediately called the stewards. The stewards only had a few seconds to react. It’s unfortunate what happened, but we will not take any chances when it comes to the life of a rider or horse.”
Because Race 10 was declared a ‘No Contest’ all wagers on the race were refunded and consolation payoffs were made for daily double and Pick 3 wagers made in prior races.
Due to the ‘No Contest’ ruling, 100-percent of Sunday’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 pool was paid off to those bettors with the winners of the other five races. The 7-1-5-3-all-1combination paid $17,858.18.
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot of $3,325,154.33 that was carried over to Sunday’s program will be carried over to Wednesday’s program.
