HE GOT THE PURSE MONEE

He may have had one of the best records of any 3-year-old in the field but John Ross’ smooth striding colt LOKINFORPURSEMONEE was let go at a whopping 14 to 1 in the $100,000 Woodstock Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday. Surrounded by speedsters by U.S. sired including the talented Uncle B. Lokinforpursemonee, making his season debut rolled down the middle of the track and reeled in the aforementioned to win the 6 furlong stakes in 1:09.17, good for a huge 88 Beyer Speed Figure.

He earned $72,000 for the win as breeders’ awards added to the first place purse.
A two-time stakes winner last year as a juvenile,, the son of Silent Name (Jpn) – Anne’s Purse by Porto Foricos was bought by Ross at the local yearling sale 2 years ago for $32,000. He earned $202,000 in his first season of racing. The colt was bred by Glenn Sikura’s HIll ‘n’ Dale Farms, which obtained Anne’s Purse after the stout chestnut mare had retired as a stakes winner of over $300,000.

“He was the highest earner, the highest weight – he carried 123 pounds,” noted Ross, of last year’s Victoria Stakes and Simcoe Stakes champ. “He beat some good three-year-olds here. I’m so proud of this horse, being by Silent Name. The way that Luis rode him today, that was kind of our plan. We let the little speed go. If you look at his sprint races, he does want to come from behind. I know last year, I tried him going long and sometimes you have to try with the big money for the three-year-olds. It didn’t work, but we’re back to the good plan again.”

Ross, who has developed young horses such as Lexie Lou and Brooklyn’sway, wintered in Florida this past season after taking a year off in early 2016.

Jockey Luis Contreras settled Lokinforpursemonee, the second-longest shot on the toteboard, near the back of the pack through the early stages of the Woodstock as Yorkton and Marten River set splits of :22.37 and :44.39 with heavy favourite Uncle B poised just to their outside.

Yorkton and Marten River were still one-two at the stretch call, but Contreras and Lokinforpursemonee were picking up steam and ground on their rivals with every step, going on to notch a 1 ¼-length victory. Uncle B, who was fractious in the gate, settled for second, while Yorkton was third. The final time was a brisk 1:09.16.

The pre-race plan Ross drew up worked to perfection.

“They told me he was going to come from off the pace,” noted Contreras. “He had so much confidence in the horse, that I just rode him the way he told me. He had a tremendous kick from the 3/8ths (pole) to the wire.

“I got a perfect race. I got a perfect trip. I was waiting for the 3/8ths to make my move. I asked him a little and he started to make his move by himself. Once I hit the quarter-pole, I just swung outside and he gave me everything.”

JEROME LERMYTE made his second trip to Woodbine a memorable one and the young rider is hoping to make the Toronto track his home. Riding Debby Oxley’s SUPERDUPER SKY in race 6, Lermyte sat chilly on the grey filly in the back of the field and then powered his mount through rivals, pushed another one out of the way and then on to victory. Trainer Mark Casse has brought Lermyte to Ontario to ride some of his horses while the rider sorts out paperwork in order for him to ride for Canadian owners as well as American owners.

 

Superduper Sky, by Sky Mesa, raced at Fair Grounds in the winter and won a 1 mile grass maiden race. She won this 5 1/2 furlong allowance/optional claiming event at 5 to 1 and she posted a 78 Beyer Figure, the best of her career. The time was 1:04.34.

It was a big day for trainer ALEX MCPHERSON as he sent out 2 starts and both won. GIGANTIC BREEZE, racing as a gelding for the first time, and DAYLIGHT BREEZE both won for Stan Dodson’s Hopefield Farm. The former won for $40,00 claiming with an inside run under Gary Boulanger, who has started the local meeting on a high note.

DAYLIGHT BREEZE (Exchange Rate) won the last race, an allowance race, in his season debut, also under Boulanger. His time for 7 furlongs was 1:22.45, an 84 Beyer Figure on a fast surface.

Race 1- The Mike Doyle stable grabbed its first win of the year as LEIGHLIN ROAD rallied from far back to win this maiden claiming race ($20,000) under Luis Contreras. The winner was the 3rd offspring of Midnight Lute to win at Woodbine early in the season.

Race 2- PISTON BROKE was well prepared to win his season debut for trainer Alan Desruisseaux, Maureen Hewitt-Topp and R. Brohman. The chestnut gelding did not win in 11 races last year but enjoyed being fresh for this 7 furlong dash. Sunny Singh rode the son of United States in this $10,000 claiming race.

The win was a poignant one for Desruisseaux as his wife’s grandson, Max Taylor, died suddenly at the age of 5 recently. Max, who had been borm premature and had been battling serious physical ailments, was in the U.S. for long awaited surgery when he passed away. Read more about Max here:

VINTAGE TIME won his season debut and his maiden in this $20,000 claiming race for Ryan Kerbel and trainer Denyse McClachrie. The Society’s Chairman 4-year-old was the 2nd winner for Luis Contreras  from the first 3 races. The 4-year-old tracked the speed early in this 6 furlong race and rallied to win in his 10th career start.

McClachrie has 2 wins on the season already.

Race 4- Laurie Silvera sent out PRIDDY FAIR to a win for $10,000 claiming in her season debut under Omar Moreno. The dark bay Saffir filly was making her 8th career start and it was her 3rd win.

YES DARLIN went gate to wire along the firm inside path to win a maiden allowance in race 6. Winter raced, the Tucci Stables gelding, trained by Nick Gonzalez, was making his 4th career race and first start at Woodbine. Emma-Jayne Wilson ride.

More speed from the inside ruled race 9 – PHIL IN THE BLANK won for the 5th time in his last 7 races. Currently owned by Bushlot Farm Inc and trained by Anthony Pottinger, the dark bay Philanthropist gelding was making his season debut and he led all the way through 5 furlongs in this allowance/optional claiming race.

This was the first winner for trainer Pottinger.

Wagering on Saturday was $2.8 million.

Horse of the Year CAREN and Champion Female Sprinter RIVER MAID are in a super field for the Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes today at Woodbine. The $125,000 race is 6 furlongs on Tapeta and is race SEVEN on a 9 race card.

CAREN, who was also Champion Three-Year-Old filly of 2016, won 4 of 9 races last year on turf and Tapeta, all at route distances. This is a starting point for the Robert Marzilli-owned filly and no easy task as she meets older gals for the first time.

RIVER MAID, owned by Very Dry Stable has won 1st time out in each of the last 2 seasons and she won 4 of 7 races last year. Patrick Husbands rides as regular rider Gary Boulanger is on Galina Point.

Trainer Mike Stidham has shipped in another runner for DARRS Inc. one week after the team won the Star Shoot with R Nada. This time it is EUOBOSS who comes in for her stakes debut. The field also has Grade 2 winner Southern Ring and speedy SKYLANDER GIRL, back from an extended layoff.

 

SPORT OF QUEENS RESTRUCTURING OPTIONS 2 AND 3

As the SPORT OF QUEEN’S RACING SYNDICATE horses get ready for their first race, the group has announced that Option 2 and 3 have been merged.

Option 2, the next horse that SOQR will purchase is being put together with Option 3 horse CALLIELIKEDHERBREW (Milwaukee Brew).

IN a release, SOQR states:

We have had a restructuring of our shares available for sale, Option 2 and Option 3 have now merged.. As you know Callie was the Op 3 horse and as she nears her debut for Sport of Queens Racing, we felt it was best to combine all paid members to share in her. We are grouping the existing shareholders now into groups of 10, who will create a group name and be a group share hold of 1 share in Callie.

With that there will be only a few shares left for sale in Callielikedherbrew.

Callie is training forwardly towards a May 2017 start and you could own a share in her before she heads to her first start of the year!

Callie is a 20 share investment, at the cost of $2,000.00 per share plus a one-time administrative fee of 20% ($400.00) of the share(s) purchased
and the yearly operations cost of $2,000.00 per share. Total price is $4,400.00 per share.
