AVIE’S FLATTER is likely to contest the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, the 1 3/16 miles Prince of Wales Stakes on the dirt at Fort Erie. The race will be held on Tuesday July 23 in the evening.
AVIE’S FLATTER, the winterbook Plate favourite and a graded stakes winner on grass this year, could not pass winner ONE BAD BOY in the stretch run of the Queen’s Plate on June 29. It was the third time that owner/breeder Ivan Dalos has had horses finish second in the Plate.
Dalos’ AMIS GIZMO, 2nd in the 2016 Plate, came right back to win the Prince of Wales.
ONE BAD BOY is at Woodbine preparing for the ‘Wales’ and TONE BROKE and SKYWIRE are also expected to take on the Plate winner again at Fort Erie.

ESCAPE CLAUSE AT DELAWARE; TRACK HAS STRANGLES OUTBREAK

Two cases of “strangles” at Delaware Park race track has Escape Clause’s trainer, Don Schnell, worrying that Escape Clause’s $750,000 race on Saturday, July 13, might not fill.
The concern is that mares will not ship in for that race if trainers fear having to remain at Delaware for 14 days longer than they wanted. When a new case of “strangles” is discovered, all horses at the track remain under quarantine for 14 days, Schnell told The Insider. That means they can’t leave for that period of time.
Schnell said Escape Clause has regained the 200 pounds she lost in her bumpy-road trip from Minnesota to Belmont three weeks ago–where she finished fourth in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes–and is ready to go in the Grade 2 $750,000 Delaware Handicap at a track that, Schnell said, has the most beautiful paddock in North America.
In two workouts over the past two weeks at Delaware, Escape Clause was second-fastest of 70 horses on June 22 and first of seven on July 1.
There is no danger of Escape Clause contracting the readily-transmitted infection, Schnell said. His barn is at the opposite side of the stables where two horses developed the infection, the second case appearing Sunday.
Strangles is a bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract of horses, causing enlargement of the lymph nodes in the throat, which may impair breathing. The “impair breathing” part is why the infection is called “strangles.”
Thirteen horses are nominated to the Delaware Handicap including the highly-rated Elate who Escape Clause beat in the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn.

And she is almost sure to start an odds-on favourite for the £750,000 Group One contest at Sandown Park, which is part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.
CTHS B.C. – YEARLING SALE/HORSES OF RACING AGE SALE CATALOGUE ON-LINE
Yearling sale time is drawing near! Hard to believe since in Ontario it feels as if we are just beginning summer but sales get underway in a month in Manitoba (41 catalogued at the CTHS Manitoba sale).
The BC CTHS has over 90 yearlings and horses of racing age in the book for the SEPT. 10 sale.
Among them is a Kentucky bred filly from graded stakes winning mare PALADIN BAY, a top runner at Woodbine. This is the second foal of paladin Bay and this yearling filly is by Oxbow.
The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (BC Division) also has a rebate incentive for 2019.
Thanks to an agreement with the Presidents of the Horsemen’s Associations, the generous scheme aims to support local breeders by immediately rewarding purchasers of BC-bred yearlings.
Each purchaser of a BC-bred yearling at the CTHS (BC Division) 2019 Yearling & Mixed Sale will immediately receive a credit of up to $1,500 towards the purchase price, excluding applicable taxes.
The program will provide a credit for 50% of the purchase price of a BC-bred up to a maximum benefit of $1,500. The program will provide a minimum $1,000 credit for any BC-bred selling in the 2019 CTHS (BC Division) Sale for $2,000 or less. As further examples: a horse selling for $2,500 will generate a credit of $1,250; a horse selling for $3,000 or more will receive the maximum $1,500.
In order to receive this credit, the buyer must commit to having all registration papers forwarded to Hasting Race Office and kept in its possession for the entirety of the 2020 Hastings Racing Season.
The registration papers will be released for the sole purpose of the horse running in a stake race in another jurisdiction, but for no other reason.
Immediately following the stake race the registration papers must be returned to the Hastings Race Office.
Repayment of all funds received under this incentive program will release the papers to the owner at any time prior to the end of the 2020 Hastings Racing Season.
Buy backs are not eligible for this incentive.
To qualify the yearling must be a registered BC-bred who is sold to a third-party purchaser either at the time of the CTHS BC sale through the sales ring, or by noon on the day following the sale. All BC-bred yearlings sold after the sale, but before noon the following day will be eligible for the credit of up to $1,500 as long as the sale goes through and is confirmed by the CTHS Sales Office and appears on the official sales results sheet for publication.

I had a chance to meet Mr. McCririck several times at Breeders’ Cups over the years, including the 1996 edition at Woodbine. A colourful and funny character, McCririck made racing broadcasts fun and entertaining.
