 FREAKY FRIDAY at WOODBINE
The track was getting wetter as the day went on and as some figured out the surface was quick but not kind to speed, it was certainly biased to outside closers all day.

race 1- REBEL LIONESS made it 2 wins in succession for the irish Wisky racing LLC and trainer Laurie Silvera. The Rebellion 4yo took both wins for $10,000 claiming and both were rallies from well off the pace. Omar Moreno rode again and Hickory Tree Farm bred the filly in Ontario.

race 2- a maiden allowance at 9 furlongs featured a slow early pace and a couple of horses who tried to make early moves but were foiled.
The favoured entry from Colebrook Farms of Sleepy P and Biigon were 3 to 5 but it was the impossibly-hot Kevin Attard barn that won the race with ONE GOOD DEED, a Milwaukee Brew 4yo gelding making his 3rd start off the layoff. The Chesney racing gelding was the last to move in mid stretch and he won at 7 to 2
Luis Contreras rode the gelding who was making his  11th career start.

race 3- this $32K claiming race stayed on turf as the rain had started bbut later the races came off. Logical favourite GENTLEMAN JACKSON, who just won this same race, went too fast on the pace this time, zipping out in 22 flat and 45 and he wound up third as 39 to 1 short UNCATCHABLE FIRE rallied to win for hsi 2nd score in 3 races thi syear.
This is one perplexing Niigon gelding who won for $10K in his season opener at 17 to 1 for Stacy Van Camp and then bombed last time behind Gentleman Jackson. The Mike Mattine trained 7-year-old has 5 wins in 46 races and Sheena Ryan rode him very well. He earned a 75 Beyer Figure.

race 4- POLY ANNA came from far behind in this 6 1/2 furlong race to win while out in the middle of the track and it was her 2nd win in succession. This is a Debmar Stables filly, trained by Ricky Griffith and ridden by Patrick Husbands and she is by Tiz Wonderful. She has won both races off the one year layoff and both were for $20K claiming.

race 5- First time starter ALBERTOWN debuted for $10,000 claiming for Keith JOhn’s True North Stable and trainer Lorne Richards, had fast works and rallied 3 wide to win in 57 1/5 for 5 furlongs. The impeccably bred grey 4yo was a $16,000 purchase as a yearling but the son of Awesome Again was the 3rd runner for millionaire FINANCINGAVAILABLE, who had not done well as a broodmare with 2 minor winners. No dout this guy has some issues but Carl Defreitas rode him well and he won big at 7 to 1.

race 6 – HOT KISS scored a remarkable win in this maiden allowance at 9 furlongs for ONtario sired fillies and mares. This Philanthropist – Kiss of Fire by Broken Vow 3yo stumbled at the start and was last around the first turn.
The good news for her was Sarah Toga Saint went wild on the pace in 23 1/5 and 46 1/5 and this gal bided her time, rallied inside and blew away the field for Super Six Stable and trainer Mike DePaulo. Eurico Rosa sa Silva rode the Denny Andrews bred filly who was making her 5th career start.

race 7 – off the turf for this maiden race for $50,00 claiming and the 13 horse field was down to 7.
Trini Lime flew on the pace in 22 2/5 and 45 3/5 and that set things for for wide ralliers with the winner being CONQUEST KRONOS, who is actually owned by Full House Stables LLC (Lessee). This winner, trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Eurico Rosa da Silva is a Kantharos 3yo who was making his 2nd career start and he had blinkers on.
He was a $300,000 yearling purchase and is a Florida-bred out of a Silver Deputy mare.

race 8 – off the grass at 1 1/16 miles and this was an allowance race/optional claiming event for $62,500. Heavily favoured Two to Tango seemed to dwell at the break and she lost more than 8 lengths early.
An honest pace of 24 4/5 and 49 1/5 saw the other 4 runners battle it out off the turn for home with LYNESSA rallying for the win for Phil Lanning and trainer Ron Sadler. Tommy Wong had his 2nd winner in 2 racing cards. The winner is a homebred for Lanning and she is an Old Forester 6yo who is 5 for 28 in her career with earnings now well over $300,000.

race 9 – another 1 1/8 mile race this one for $10,000 claimers, non-winners of 2 and the pace was 24 flat, 48 2/5 and more longshot fun as DEMAWATCHMI won his 2nd straight race with a 2 path stalking trip under Bryce Alderson for Candice Warwick and trainer Steven Cathcart. The winner is a Sligo Bay (ire) gelding, 5 years old, who was 18 to 1 and he beat rallying favoured Broadway sensation, who was claimed by Let It Ride Stable. Flattery, who was 9th,  was also claimed, by Troy Wismer.
The winner posted a day’s best 76 Beyer Figure.

PRINCE OF WALES – JULY 28 FORT ERIE – (7)

Probable field:

SHAMAN GHOST

BREAKING LUCKY

BILLY’S STAR

OAKTON

FIELD OF COURAGE

CONQUEST BOOGALOO

SCORCH

Trainer Roger Attfield has not decided totally on Billy or Danish Dynaformer going into the Wales on dirt, most likely Billy’s Star will start. The incredibly unlucky CONQUEST BOOGALOO will run with FIELD OF COURAGE (by Marchfield) and OAKTON (Macho Uno). SHAMAN GHOST, the Plate winner, will have a workout on Tuesday on the training track and Brian Lynch will be in town to monitor the event.

“It may come up a small field but it sure is competitive.” said Lynch on Friday to THOROUGHBLOG. “I would be scared of [Conquest Boogaloo], he got slammed at the start and still ran well.”

Trainer MARK FROSTAD noted that SCORCH  will likely run as that colt has good dirt form while others in the race have not done well on dirt as of yet. “We certainly would not mind a really rainy day either,” said Frostad, who trains Scorch for George Strawbridge.

ALYSSA SELMAN DETERMINED TO WALK AND RIDE AGAIN
Assiniboia Downs site of fundraiser July 19

From Globalnews.ca by Lorraine Nickel

WINNIPEG – For only an hour a day, Alyssa Selman can sit in a wheelchair.

Precious time before being confined to a bed once again.

“This is quiet nice actually,” said Selman Saturday, during an interview with Global News at the Health Sciences Centre.

Two weeks ago, her life changed forever. As the 29-year old jockey, a mother of two, was racing to the finish line at Assiniboia Downs, her horse Lord Jasmond clipped the heels of the horse in front of him, violently throwing Alyssa to the ground.

“I don’t remember getting ready to ride,” said Alyssa, “I don’t remember the race, I don’t remember the accident.”
