Race 1 – DESERT HIGHWAY won her maiden for the red-hot Brian Lynch Stable in race 1 as the overwhelming favourite.
A virtual certainty ‘on paper’, the Vicar filly is out of the winning machine Come Home Cathy and Howard Walton bred the gal.
Race 2 – SEXY SHERI completed the chalky Daily Double as she battled on the pace and then edged clear to win her 2nd consecutive race for the Ralph Biamonte team. She is 3 for 8 in her career now and is by Where’s the Ring. She had won for $20K in her previous race and was dropping to $16K yesterday.
Race 3 – More TKO/LYNCH/WALTON here. A maiden allowance for 2yo fillies, Ontario sired, went to THRESHOLD, who had a professional style win from just off the pace to win in 59.09 in her career debut. She is by One Way Love out of Takinf the Edge by Roar.
She had shown fast workout times.
Race 4- Ontario homebred MIKIKO, by Tethra, won her maiden close to the pace in a sharp 1:24.61 for the $16,000 claimign event. She is owned and was bred by GDL Stable and trained by Josie Carroll.
The second split of the maiden $16K race for fillies went a bit faster, 1:24.20 and was won on the lead by OPEN ZIPPER who was dropping right now in class for Barbara Minshall. The homebred filly is by City Zip.
The notoriously win shy WICKED EMER suddenly won yesterday. The 6yo mare, 1 for 31 in her career and she had not won in 4 years, was making her 4th start of the season and was being ridden for the first time by Todd Kabel and was turnin gback to 6 furlongs. She was 7 to 1 and beat .55 to 1 shot Jumptoconclusions who was 4th. Kirk Harris owns ‘Emer, by Tethra, and Alex McPherson trains.
The STEVE aSMUSSEN BARN has done well with its ONtario sired runners – 2yos Bold Canadian and Elated Moon – and now the 3yo BAYLAND who won yesterday. Th grey Paynes Bay gelding, claimed by Maggi Moss in Flordia for $16K won an allowance race for maidens worth $60K yesterday as the big favourite.
Cpmpleting an ONtario-sired, maiden them was MOONLIT BEAUTY winning her maiden in the finale for owner breeder William Gierkink. The Perigee Moon gal had won her maiden 2 races ago but was disqualified. She took well to the grass yesterday and won as the favourite.
Just $1.1 million was bet on Thursdays card.

Reade Baker set for W. Va. Derby bid

The education of the Canadian trainer Reade Baker has taken him to racetracks on numerous continents Europe, Asia and Australia among them. His travels within the shores of his native North America have been widespread as well.
“But I really don’t recall if I’ve ever been to Mountaineer Racetrack before,” Baker said. “Maybe when it was Waterford Park, which was quite a while ago. I’ll be there (on August 1), for sure.”
Baker plans to saddle Monty’s Best, for the 40th running of the Grade 2, $750,000 West Virginia Derby. Monty’s Best has been lightly raced, making only five career starts to date, but he has won three of them and placed in the other two. He is a son of the leading Florida sire, Montbrook, and could be an emerging star.
Based at the Woodbine racetrack near Toronto, Monty’s Best broke his maiden at second asking on October 3 of last year. The following month, he shipped down to Churchill Downs and finished a strong second in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes.
This year, Monty’s Best has twice won in allowance company at Woodbine. His most recent score was achieved by a half-length at the 1 1/16-mile distance on July 5. Monty’s Best will have to go a half-furlong further in the West Virginia Derby. His running style is that of a closer, and the 1 1/8-mile Derby distance should be to his liking.
Monty’s Best campaigns for Jim and Susan Hill. Baker purchased him for the Hills for $100,000 at an auction for 2-year-olds in Ocala, Florida, in 2008. “He’s a big, good looking colt, and I liked the way he was training,” said Baker. “And he’s looking very strong right now.”

Young iron horse Lucky Elmo will not only back up at Randwick on Saturday just three days after his gallant second at the same venue, he is also likely to go around the following week at Rosehill.
Trainer Bindi Cheers confirmed the two-year-old would be lining up in Saturday’s Sir Dapper Handicap (1600m) for what will be his 20th career start and his fifth this month.
The Mull Of Kintyre youngster from Taree on the NSW north coast came within a short neck of the Peter Snowden-trained Lonhro debutant Heraklion in the North Bondi Handicap (1300m) on Wednesday.
