THIRD SHEPPERTON SCORE FOR PASO DOBLE

The signs were there: a weird holiday weekend saw horses such as Palace Malice at Saratoga flop in the Whitney, Alpha Bettor get trapped and give up in the Seagram and 50 to 1 shots winning with ease.
Phil’s Dream was up against the racing gods.
Plus, he was up against a tough old guy named PASO DOBLE, now 8-years-old, who was ridden by the crafty Eurico da Silva. Da Silva was one of of a few who thought it this gelding gets out to set a slow pace, the 6 1/2 furlong race could be his for the third time in the last  4 years.

And did it ever work. Through impossibly slow splits of 23.82, 46.80, PASO DOBLE (Bold ‘n Flashy – Dance Lessons by Foxhound had a long lead turnign for home and Phil’s Dream could not gain and in fact dropped back while San Nicola Thunder came on for 2nd. The winning margin was over 3 lengths and the winning time of 1:16.58 was good for an 87 Beyer Figure.
The Kentucky-bred, owned by Centennial Farm (Niagara) Inc. and Craig Racing (the latter only showed as co-owner this year) Paso Doble has 11 wins in 44 races and $900,000 in earnings.

Not bad for a horse who cost $5,000 at auction, bought by Laurie Silvera from agent Sue Foreman 7 years ago.

And is has not much mattered to Paso Doble that unrest in his career has led to him changing trainers numerous times since he moved from owner Terry Hamilton to Centennial.

Sid Attard, Don MacRae, Mark Casse trained the horse recently before Mark Fournier took over this year.

The 3rd Shepperton win is the most by any horse in that race.

 

MORE MONDAY

Race 1- TOTALLY DRENCHED won his debut in this 5 furlong maiden dash for juveniles. The son of Stormy Atlantic – Coscowilla by Notebook was bred by Tommy Ligon who owns the baygelding. He won a 3 horse photo under Patrick Husbands. Barb Minshall trains. Big favourite ENSIGH ELI got loose and was scratched before the race.

Race 2- BLONDE BREEZE, a 5yo mare by Posse bred by Bruno Bros Farm, won for Mort Hary who claimed her for $8,000 in June. This race was for $12,500 and Steve Bahen rode. She was also the longshot shot on the board following in the pattern for the weekend.

Race 3- CRYSTAL DUCK did not sit around, she won as the favourite for $19,000 after two second-place finishes in succession. The Paul Buttigieg homebred is by Bold executive. Justin Stein rode.

Race 4- Apprentice NICK WEBB guided 13 to longshot NORTHERN HAMMER to victory in this $40,00 claiming race on the grass at 6 1/2 furlongs, posting the day’s best 88 Beyer Figure. This 6yo gelding had won with a 97 Beyer earlier in the meeting and had been 3rd in his recent turf race against similar. High Five Racing and Shane Learn condition this son of Medaglia d’Oro. The entrymate Chief Thundercloud was a main track only and was the gelding who was vanned off recently after a horrific journey on Polytrakc.

Race 5- A two-year-old maiden race for Ontario sired rivals went to 2nd time starting PHIL’S COCKTAIL for owner/breeder Ron Clarkson. This is a son of Philanthropist out of Sunset Cocktail by Precise End who had been 2nd in his debut. David Moran replaced an absent Chantal Sutherland Kruse who took time off to vacation in Lake Tahoe. John Leblanc is the current trainer for Clarkson who has had horses with a variety of conditioners over the years.

Race 6 – NORTH OF NEVER has won 2 straight races for Kendel Standlee and Richard Schultx and trainer Joan Scott as he took this $16,00 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles on Polytrack. The son of North Light (Ire) was ridden by Luis Contreras. He was claimed by the newly formed FINISH LINE BAR STABLE and trained Martin Drexler and he posted an 80 Beyer Figure.

Race 7 – EMINENT FORCE, a beautifully bred War front 4yo gelding, barged his way to victory in this turf allowance/optional claiming race under Melanie Pinto to win for Anne and Bill Scott. Bred by Hope Stock Farm and Mickey Taylor (Seattle Slew fame), Eminent Force had only raced ongrass 3 other times (once on a bog) and he had an 85 Beyer Figure on his last firm turf outing. Fresh off a Fort Erie allowance win on dirt, the dark bay rallied in the stretch at 18 to 1, drifted in which caused AL’S UNCLE to check out. The claim of foul was disallowed and Emimnent Force had his 3rd career win with an  85 Beyer Figure.

Race 9 – REMEBEL, an impeccably bred Tiznow filly out of western Canadian star Raylene, bounced back from a upsetting run on July 17 and rallied to win this maiden allowance for Calmar Stable and Ranch and trainer Reade baker. Ridden by Juan Crawford, this dark bay gal acted up prior to her latest and then reared up and broke very slowly from the gate so the race was a toss. This time, she stalked on the rail and split fillies under a hustling Crawford to win in her 7th career race in this 6 1/2 furlong turf dash.

Race 1- SCINDIA was the predictable winner of this 5 furlong maiden allowance. A Kentucky bred by Cool Coal Man, she was making her 3rd career start for Beclawat Stable and trainer Robert Tiller. Justin Stein rode.

Race 2- Maiden 2-year-old fillies on turf and CONQUEST HARLANATE was the winner for Conquest Stables and trainer Mark Casse. Patrick Husbands rode this daughter of Harlan’s Holiday who was bred by Bill Graham in caledon, ON.

Race 3- THE KING’S GUARD led all the way to at 3 to 5 to win for Kadain Gordon and trainer Mario Maver. This Leonnatus Anteas gelding was making his 12th career start and he was racing for $8,000 claiming maidens.

Race 5- another nice 2yo maiden race on grass, this one for boys. The winner was PASSION FOR ACTION, a white faced colt for Ben Hutzel, who raced the dam, Maritim Passion and bred her to Speightstown. Trained by Mike DePaulo and ridden by Luis Contreras, this colt was making his 2nd career start and he was up to beat big favourite Conquest Typhoon.

Race 6- This race was delayed as so many things went wrong. Mark Casse’s paint pony WIZARD suddenly collapsed and died before the race. The pony was helping out in this 11-hors emaiden field. RING FOR MADDIE was scratched as she got loose.
Then, during the race, LEGAL BIZ checked badly on the turn when IMPRETTYANDIKNOWIT appeared to drop in on the turn on her way to a 3rd place finish. The winner was I’M JUST SAYIN, a bear’s Kid filly who is owned by Natural Eight Racing and T C Stable and trained by Bill Tharrenos. Jesse Campbell rode.

Race 7 – Blinkers on CHIEF CHATO, a Tomhawk homebred for Lisa McCallum and Cindy Cox, and at 50 to 1 he led all the way under Gerry Olguin to win this $20,00 claiming race. He had been 7th beaten 16 lengths in his previous otuing, Greg Cox trains.

Race 8 – a maiden 2yo filly race went to OUR NAT’S who had been second twice in her three races and a beaten favourite twice. She was up in time to win this race at 5 furlongs for James Passero and John Ross. Richard Moylan bred the daughter of Sky Conqueror out of Big lips by Grand Slam. Gary Boulanger was riding his 2nd winner.
Race 10: the last race was a maiden allowance for older gals and ELGIN rallied on the grass to win as the logical choice for Curraghmore Farm and Reade Baker. Emma-Jayne Wilson rode the daughter of Peaks and Valleys.
second in the race was YOURSOFUNNEE bred by Bill Rowntree in Ontario and raced by Ron House and Rainbow End racing. The runner-up is a Giant Gizmo filly.

Having sold as $360,000 as a two-year-old in 2013, expectations were more than average for this good looking son of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense. Although he was unable to start as a juvenile last year, Street Prancer has done his best running of late, exemplified by his nice victory in the Manitoba Derby on August 4th.

In the 66th running of the “Derby”, Street Prancer was allowed to bide his time mid pack until the field left the turn from the backstretch. At the top of the lane, the bay sophomore surged to the lead and held a distinct advantage at the wire while notching his first career added-money win.

Bred by Hidden Brook Farm, Jonathan Mills and Darley, Street Prancer is a half-brother to Stakes winner and G3-placed Shopton Lane and Stakes-placed Light Up The Lane. Street Prancer is out of Lightfoot Lane, a half-sister to G2 winner Skipshot and G3 winner Skip Code.

Street Prancer lived up to [his]  advance billing and left the competition in the dust to claim the 66th running of the Manitoba Derby.

After spending much of the season racing in Indiana, the outside invader took over the lead midway through the final turn and galloped to victory by one-and-a-half lengths to come away victorious in the $75,000 race before a crowd of nearly 7,000 at Assiniboia Downs on Monday.

In just eight career starts, Street Prancer — who is owned by noted trainer Steven M. Asmussen — has four first-place finishes.

 B C CUP DAY REVIEW – WILO KAT IS PURR-FECT, GRINDER STAKES CHAMPIONSHIP CLAIM

 

KOFFEE GRINDER posted an 88 Beyer Speed Figure to win the Stellar’s Jay Bc Cup race at Hastings Park on Monday to get into the fray as Canada’s champion 3-year-old male. Owned and bred by Butch and Renata Goertzen, the bay 3-year-old has won ALL FOUR OF HIS RACES in 2014, 2 stakes, and has been improving his Beyer Figures with every race. He is by Grindstone out of Just Pinn’r by Stephanotis.

Vancouver sun report: Vancouver, B.C. -­ A Hollywood screenwriter couldn’t have written a more tantalizing chapter in the life and times of Wilo Kat, Monday’s come-from-behind winner of the $75,000 Redekop BC Cup Classic at Hastings Racecourse.

A year ago Wilo Kat ran a disappointing and devastating third as the heavy favourite in the Classic on BC Cup Day with two long shots, Brass and Gold (20-1) and The Gov (22-1), finishing first and second, respectively.

Noted for doing his best running late, Wilo Kat trailed Monday’s five-horse field but made his patented well-timed move along the rail in the stretch run to win going away by three and three-quarter lengths in a final time of 1:49.61 over the 1 1/8 mile race for 3-year-olds and up.

Running for trainer John Snow with leading rider Amadeo Perez up, Wilo Kat paid $3.60, $2.30 and $2.10.

CANADIAN-BRED COLT SELLS FOR $350,000, REGIS FARMS STILL IN ACTION

A dark bay Ontario bred colt born in January 2013 sold for $350,000 to Conquest Stable at the Fasig Tipton Saratoga sale on Monday, the first of 2 sessions. The colt is by Scat Daddy out of Hangingbyamoment by Thunder Gulch.
The mare had been purchased for just $5,200 by Hidden Brook Farm in 2011 at the Eastern Mixed Sale.  The yearling was bought this January by pinhookers for $150,000.

REGIS FARMS, which reportedly bought Silver Springs Farm and Hopewell Farm last year and has run 7 horses since its inception, bought the second highest priced yearling on the first night of Saratoga.

Regis started XRATE on the weekend in a maiden 2yo filly race with trainer Brian Lynch. The farm has a 2yo winner in CDalifornia this year that it owns with Stonestreet farms. The regis Silks are almost idential to those of Reade Baker Racing Stable.

HALL OF FAME WEEK IN CANADA!

Passionate and intelligent members of the horse racing industry know that the history of this great game is very important to the future of the game. The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame does an excellent job in honouring the heroes of the sport in Thoroughbred and Stabndardbred racing, from humans to horses.

Wednesday night in Mississauga, the newest set of horses and humans will be inducted in the annual dinner and auction and it should be a very cool night.
The seven Thoroughbred representatives in the 2014 class include:

WANDO, one of only seven horses to ever win the Canadian Triple Crown was Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2003 for breeder owner Gustav Schickedanz, an honoured member of the CHRHF.  Trained by Mike Keogh, with Patrick Husbands as his primary jockey, the Langfuhr son retired from racing with 11 wins, eight of them in stakes, in 23 starts and earnings of $2.5 million.  He began his career as a stallion in 2006, first in Kentucky before returning to his birthplace in 2011. Wando’s progeny have earnings in excess of $5.2 million and include Grade 1 winner Tu

rallure.

APELIA, a very fast filly owned and bred by Steve Stavro’s Knob Hill Stable, was named Canada’s Sovereign Award champion sprinter in 1993.  Conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Phil England, she won half of her 24 career starts and was a stakes winner at the highest level for three consecutive years.   A winner in New York, Kentucky, New Jersey, as well as Ontario, Apelia was ridden by Hall of Fame jockeys Larry Attard and Don Seymour in all her races except one.  Apelia is the dam of champion mare Saoirse.
COOL MOOD, herself a daughter of Northern Dancer, won the 1969 Canadian Oaks for Hall of Fame Builder D.G. Willmot, and went on to become one of Canada’s most influential broodmares. In fact, she produced two fillies who in turn, would both produce Canadian Triple Crown winners. Her daughter Shy Spirit was the dam of Izvestia, and daughter Passing Mood was the dam of With Approval. The latter is an equine member of the Hall of Fame along with his half-brother, Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold.

Argentine-born trainer HORATIO LURO, nicknamed “El Gran Senor” was hired as a trainer by E.P. Taylor and was best known in Canada for training Northern Dancer in 1964, 50 years ago.  During his career, Luro trained 43 Stakes winners including three Queen’s Plate winners.
Named Canada’s outstanding jockey in 1993 and 1994, ROBERT LANDRY’S  stats over a 29 year riding career include 17,656 mounts with purse earnings of $69.7 million and over 2,000 wins.  Of note was his 1999 Atto Mile win on Quiet Resolve, as well as the 2004 Queen’s Plate aboard Niigon.  He rode five consecutive Canadian Champion two-year-old fillies from 1996-2000.   The 2003 Avelino Gomez Memorial Award winner for lifetime achievement as a jockey, Landry has also made significant contributions to the promotion of racing, including participating as a board member for LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society.

BILL GRAHAM has b

een an integral participant in the horse racing industry for almost half a century as an outstanding breeder, owner and racing executive.  He is the owner of Windhaven Farms which operates in both Caledon, Ontario and Lexington, Kentucky, and has bred and/or raced many Sovereign Award-winning horses throughout his career including the 2012 Canadian Horse of the Year Uncaptured.  Graham also bred U.S. Grade I winner Joyful Victory who was victorious in the 2013 Santa Margarita Stakes at Santa Anita.

ART STOLLERY was the owner and breeder of two of Canada’s most celebrated racing stars, both CHRHF inductees:   Kennedy Road, named after the location of his Unionville based Angus Glen Farms, dominated Canadian racing for three years.  He was named Champion 2-year-old in 1970 and again Champion as a 3 year-old the following year; 1971. This was followed by more accolades including Canadian Horse of the Year in 1973.  Ke

nnedy Road was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000 and has a stakes race, which is contested annually at Woodbine, named after him.  Laurie’s Dancer, named after Stollery’s daughter, was an outstanding racing daughter of Northern Dancer. She captured the Canadian Oaks in 1971 on her way to being named Canada’s Horse of the Year. During that season, she was also victorious in the very prestigious Alabama Stakes at Saratoga.  Laurie’s Dancer was enshrined in to the Hall of Fame in 2006.
