IMPORTANT RACES FOR KENTUCKY DERBY HOPEFULS COMING UP
3 events this weekend
Potential KENTUCKY DERBY FAVOURITE CAIRO PRINCE has 14 points as he tries to crush the Florida Derby this weekend. Canadian-bred MATADOR will add blinkers and try for a piece of the action.
The draw for posts this this morning.
from Louisville-Courier Journal:
100-point races: Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby, $1 million Louisiana Derby and $2 million UAE Derby;
$1 million Santa Anita Derby and $1 million Wood Memorial on April 5,
and $1 million Arkansas Derby and $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass on April 12.
The road to Dallas and college basketball supremacy might be at the Elite Eight. But in the horse racing world, we’re now at the round of seven — the Kentucky Derby prep races worth 100 points to the winner and 40 to the runner-up, which should easily gain entry into the May 3 classic at Churchill Downs. Depending on a horse’s points going in, the 20 points for third or even 10 for fourth could clinch a spot in the Derby’s capacity field of 20.

FASIG TIPTON FLORIDA SALE – Carlo Tucci buys relative to River Seven
A few selected 2-year-olds sold for big money at the Fasig Tipton Florida sale yesterday but the average price, gross sales and median price tumbled. The sale, held at Adena Springs in Williston, Florida had 157 horses catalogued, 85 were offered and 47 were sold. The average price was $284,468, down 26% from $385,000 in 2013. The gross was $13.37 million, down from $17.7 million.
Kentucky Derby winner SUPER SAVER was a hot item with his first crop as he had 2 of the top 5 selling colts.
Also, a colt from the first crop of MAJESTICPERFECTION and out of Ms. Cornstalk, thus a half brother to Canadian Horse of the Year BIOFUEL and stakes winner TU ENDIE WEI was the 4th top price for a colt.
WOODBINE TRAINER MARK CASSE signed the ticket for a colt from the first crop of ESKENDEREYA for $500,000, buying as agent. The colt is out of CALL ME FLEET, by Afleet, who has produced 2 stakes winners, is the dam of stakes winners and is out of Ocean’s Answer. This is the immediate family of canadian bred champions NORTHERNETTE and STORM BIRD.
The only Canadian buyer was TUCCI STABLES, which bought a$75,000 filly from the first crop of MUNNINGS out of FAUX PAS, by Sadler’s Wells. The filly is a half sister to stakes winner SANS SOUCI ISLAND, the dam of Tucci’s major stakes winner RIVER SEVEN. Carlo Tucci signed the ticket for the filly.
The Munnings filly was the only Canadian-bred in the sale that was listed as sold.
THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS had a super re-cap of the sale including some intriguing and important quotes from consignor CIARAN DUNNE:
“I think buyers really need to step up and take responsibility. There were a lot of comments here about horses not vetting and being beaten up and the main reason for that is what we=re asking these horses to do. And that problem–whether they like it or not–is the buyers. To me, it’s a little sickening to be told in March that a 2-year-old didn’t gallop out a half in :46 or :47. As long as they continue to buy off the watch and live by the gallop-outs, they’re going to force
consignors to cater to what’s selling and that’s what’s creating a monster.” – CIARAN DUNNE
